After seeing the effect on my MBP against a dark background it eventually reminded me of what this problem is...
...
These models are suffering from region-mura. This is a common defect in TFT LCD panels and it should be detected in QC. ...
...
"...the causes of muradefects include non-uniformly distributed liquid crystal material and foreign particles within the liquid crystal"

That's great to know, but it doesn't explain why the yellow tint issue on MBPs is usually located at the bottom third of the display, instead of being more randomly distributed.

Somewhere along production and assembly lines something is not set up correctly and the fault is repeating and isn't being caught in QC or it's being let through intentionally.

What happened??? :) I thought you had made up your mind not to return it......

this forum especially this thread drove me crazy for days!
everytime i open macrumors, this thread greets me with an annoying smile!:)

i asked for a refund.
which will happen in 3-5 days after they got the MBP.

dropped by the local apple store..
got a base penryn and a free printer.
used the educational discount since i'm working in a university.
over all difference came down to $350 from the refurb $1449 2.2 MBP

got the 9c81 screen
calibrated it.
didn't bother to check the yellowing anymore..

just found this...

any thoughts?

i mean, if it was the screen, wouldnt this test prove absolutely nothing?...this test is saying that even the computer thinks that those pixels arent white...i'm still trying to understand it myself, but something about it isnt making sense to me.

I just changed my background to solid white and used that colourometer or whatever it is in the utilities folder. Every part of the screen the exactly the same, and I have the yellow banding. So I wouldn't trust that video.

According to the information of the video the guy took a picture of the screen with his digital camera and checked out in photoshop if it was a true problem. So, it makes sense. It is (hopefully was) a real problem. This disproves the "optical illusion theory".

The issue comes form different viewing angles. The colourmeter is just contacted on the screen when measureing. All the region is at the same measuing angle by meter. But the viewing angle is different form top to bottom by human vision. That's result why meter can not show the difference.

Hello,

Last week I purchased my very first Mac – the 15-inch : 2.4GHz base model.

Unfortunately, I was unlucky in that I received one of the computers with the notorious yellow-on-the-bottom-1/3-of-the-screen problem.

I elected to go with the glossy display and received the display model 9C83 (not sure who the manufacturer of the aforementioned display is).

My question is; is there a color profile (specifically for my model screen) that may correct this yellow screen issue? I have heard that if one finds a more appropriate color profile for their screen model, then they can correct this yellow issue? Is this true?

Does anyone have a great color profile for the screen model 9C83?

Thank you very much in advance.

Unfortunately, there is no profile that can correct the 1/3 yellowing issue as it's a hardware defect. You may want to look at the colorsync profile thread and try one of the samsung profiles (the 9c83 is a samsung display) to see if it can minimize the issue so that it's acceptable.

black spots?

what are these black spots on display? normal or issue?

Ugh.. Sometimes I hate reading this forum! :)

I just took a much closer look at my 9c83 (comparing it to my iMac), and I definitely see the shadow issues and other things. Ugh, this is so frustrating because I hate to return and trade one problem for another.

I wish apple would release some nice calibration files for each panel. I think that'd be ideal.

I have a 9c83 and everything looks good minus a slight color shift at the bottom of the screen. Keep in mind that none of the MBP screens will look as good as the iMac screen. The desktop models use a different type (higher quality) of screen technology than the notebooks. You will see some color dithering on the portables that you shouldn't see on the desktops machines and the desktop displays have a much wider viewing range which is what contributes to the color shift at the bottom of the portable screens. If the dithering problem is severe then you may have a real problem. Sounds like the poster that compared two different portable screens does have a true problem.

I just received my MBP glossy with the 9C83 Samsung screen and the beautiful yellow band on the bottom . This being my first mac, I was pretty disappointed when I first turned it on, not only because of the yellow band, but as you describe, the screen overall sucks. I remember noticing a LG screen in the store looking much better and brighter than a Samsung screen, but thought it might just be the lighting - guess it wasn't.

And what's with the fonts being so blurry? Are all macs like this because they don't use cleartype fonts? or is it the Samsung screen?

I changed back to the 'Color LCD' profile and the shading looks much better. I remember seeing recently on these forums someone who had done professional calibration on the new MBP's and posted the ICC files. Try as I might, I cannot find that post anymore! Anyone have a link to it?

Try doing a color calibration or searching for pre-made calibration profile. That will help. My 9c83 is quite yellow with the default profile.

Cleartype is Microsoft's version of sub-pixel font smoothing. Apple uses a different type of font smoothing which is more faithful to how a font looks in the real world i.e. in print. MS's version leans more towards legible type on screen while sacrificing printed accuracy. Since printed output is very important to professionals Apple's method is better for them. You can adjust the amount of font smoothing in the Appearance Control panel.

Take a look at the ones posted in #83 https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/325971/

I'm using MBP D65 22, and I think it helped - or maybe I'm just getting used to the screen .

just got a brand new matte 2.4ghz penryn MBP.

No yellow tint! looks perfect

manufacturer: 00000610
model: 00009C81
manufacture date: C1BDFF80

Exact same specs as yours and mine also looks fine.

Well... I thought I could "live" with the yellow, but I just can't. Now that I have hidden the dock on the bottom so that my browser window can occupy the entire screen, I can REALLY see it now. It is most apparent when reading articles on a white screen. So, I'm sending it back. Only problem is that I have to wait for another BTO. I'm considering getting one from the store and living with a 5400 rpm drive...
