To anyone who is going.......Lets hold a little swap meet after the sale in the parking lot. We can trade software and stuff and give those people who didnt get a ibook a chance to trade stuff for one.

If someone can make me this deal now: if I don't get one, I'll give you $75 for the whole iBook in the parking lot. C'mon - I've never had an Apple laptop :( .

One thing that just struck me is how the county is cheating their tax payers by not doing an auction or ebay thing to maximize the revenue.

Speaking from experiance as I work for a local town government, it is far more profitable to do it the way they are doing it. All in one shot. If you had an auction excpecially eBay it would cost more money in labor hours than you would be in return. They are probably gonna have only a couple of people selling the things and they dont have to worry about boxing them up and shipping them!

More like $300+. I've been looking to buy one. :)

And no one in their right mind is going to wait on this line for hours just to sell it to someone for a $25 profit. I mean really.

I-Book sales to be restricted to Henrico residents

I-Book sales to be restricted to Henrico residents

From NBC12 News
Wednesday, August 3, 2005

See Video

Henrico County Supervisors have decided to give its residents the first opportunity to buy surplus school computers. The school system has some one-thousand I-Book laptops and had originally planned to offer them for $50 to anyone on a first come, first serve basis. But the Henrico Supervisors held a special session today to change the county’s rules for disposing of surplus property, giving Henrico taxpayers the first option.

As a result of the change, the date for selling the surplus computers has been moved back to August 16th. The sale will still be held at the Richmond International Raceway, with gates opening at 7 a.m. and the sale starting at 9 a.m. Purchasers will have to prove they are Henrico residents by presenting a driver’s license or voter ID car with a Henrico address or by having a Henrico tax receipt.

The sale will still be one computer per person. If there are any left after the August 16th sale, Henrico will schedule another sale that will be open to out-of-Henrico residents.

People from as far away as California had announced their plans to come to Henrico County and purchase one of the cheap "i-books" set to go up for sale on August 9.

I take it you are looking @ current auctions, not the completed auctions to get a real eBay market value.

Henrico County taxpayers will get first shot at buying an Apple iBook for $50.

The Board of Supervisors today passed an ordinance 4-0 to allow the taxpayers to buy county property sold at a fixed price, such as the laptops, for a period of time before the property is offered to the general public.

The sale, which had been scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday, is now to be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, at Richmond International Raceway. No date has been set for sale of the iBooks to the general public.

Frank Thornton, chairman of the five-member board, is on vacation and did not attend the meeting.

The sale is open to anyone who resides in or pays taxes on property in Henrico. Prospective purchasers must provide proof of residency or tax payment.

The iBooks had been used by high school students, who this year will receive Dell laptop computers.

News of the sale sparked international interest and thousands of e-mails and phone calls to school officials.

Oh well :-(

My friend and I were planning on taking a road trip up to Virginia from NY. Pick a ibook up and then spend the day there. So much for promoting Viriginia tourism... :p

Perhaps I'm not the first to request this, but as a result of the new "Henrico County Residents First Choice" press release, I'm wondering if there are any Henrico Countians who would be willing to purchase an iBook on my behalf. Of course, I would pay a premium for the service, but would love the opportunity.

This is a chance for you to make some easy money! PM/email me if you're available.

I'm going to look for one at $175-$225 shipped on ebay that week. Just hope it's clean.

Well it was a mad house there, with no organization. The literally let about 700 people just rush the gate at once.

Wife took way too long to get ready so I didn't end up getting one. Time to return this Office for Mac sigh.....

Just saw on the news that people got trampled. I knew it wasn't worth it, watching that mob of people.

damn, the school is going to make $50,000 dollars out of this deal. Not bad for them either.

Crap too. I just sold 250 4 year old iBooks to a company in California. I got $245.00 for the 12" and $265.00 for the 14".
If I were a taxpayer in Henrico I'd have some heads on a platter. Imagine... GIVING MY money away. Whoever authorized that shold be fired or jailed.

I just searched for news on this and couldn't find anything. Any first hand accounts?

I hope someone on MR got one.
