All fair comment. But it will get better, mate.

I'm not buying one yet. But I strongly suspect that, a year from now, it'll be pretty great.
But don't we always tend so say "it will get better"? This isn't an attack, but it is odd how Apple's "free pass" from criticism works. For example, Photos.app. We get this "revolutionary" new App thats crippled and so we start imagining the future (brushes, batch edits, etc) and making excuses for its shortcomings because "of course they'll do gradual updates". But months and years later then the software is still crippled. So that amazing stage demo turns out to be a beta product that never seems to get an Apple-worthy release..

Time Machine
Time Capsule
Apple TV (previous models)
Airport software
iTunes
iMovie
Apple keyboard
Mac Pro
Better headphones
Apple Watch
HomeKit
etc

I'm not slamming the AppleTV. I'm buying one today because I'm excited regardless of flaws. But still... sometimes it does test your loyalty to keep waiting for nothing.

What do you mean by searching a small selection? In my testing it searched iTunes, Netflix and HBO Now content just fine. I did a search of "Jake Gyllenhaal movies from 2014 on Netflix" and it returned Nightcrawler, the only result. Are you talking about "Show me comedies" and you want a list of every comedy available?

I agree on the remote app, missing that on launch day was a huge failure because there is no migration tool from the old TV, and now every early adopter has to download and login to every single one of their apps. As someone who uses 1Password with randomly generated passwords, this sucks.

Also the text entry was a huge letdown - you have a full touchpad yet we line the letters up horizontally? How does that make any sense? A simple three row system would have worked a ton better. Or better yet just make the remote app work in the first place.

My last complaint is gaming - requiring games to work with the Siri remote is just dumb. Just have game purchases show a warning that you need a more advanced controller to use them when you are on the purchase screen.

I've been thinking that a lot recently. Somebody mentioned that the connecty wire thingy (I've lost touch with what all these things are called) is still white, yet the remote and the ATV itself are black. They were wishing for a black one. Jobs would have given them one. He would immediately have noticed the mismatch and corrected it way before it got to market. Those were the kinds of details he obsessed about.
I disagree here...Apple has always had mismatched accessories. Slate iPhone -> white cable/power brick. Black MacBook (The old plastic one) -> white magsafe charger. And those are much more expensive products than the Apple TV.

I just played a tennis game the free one , and I got to say as a real life tennis player I was very impressed with how the controls worked . Wonderful better than a wii. Go on give it a go , can't wait for more apps like

But it's not your Photo Library, is it? It's the crappy Photostream or specific albums that you've chosen to share. Or am I missing something?
I'm happy with my photo stream merges my iPhone photos with my Nikon d3200 when imported into aperture it then updates my photo stream , and just works . Am I missing the point ?

4K is pointless at this stage. There's not enough content available and not enough end users that have 4K TVs.

I think the remote is a fine size. I don't want an iPad Pro sized remote, I want a small remote that means I can put away the large tv remote.

That said, I agree that Siri should be searching what is available via Home Sharing as well and it does seem odd that not all items in the iTunes Store are included yet.

iOStv isn't just a face-lift - there's a lot of changes under the skin to enable 3rd party apps, Siri integration, universal search, etc etc. The benefits of all that will come once developers take advantage of it

Also, Apple aren't developing all the apps - what ones do you consider to be essential? I bet they're the ones that 3rd party developers are working on. so you should direct your invective towards them instead. Apple made the dev kits available, not their fault if the 3rd parties haven't been quick enough to get their products in the app store.

I'm not one of the catastrophists
Yeah, you totally don't sound like one at all, oh no:
"other major faults"
"useless"
"that's hardly saying much"
"even more irritating"
"unbelievable"
"a complete bugger up"
"feel like a rip off"
"How difficult would it have been?"
"I could go on. And on. (And on.)"
"a completely useless box of junk"
"something worth bothering with
"really pissed I wasted £170 on this"

I bought an AppleTV and an Nvidia Shield (my first android device, compared to about 15-20 Apple devices I currently or have owned).
And the Nvidia Sheild has blown me away with what it can do, its literally one of the most amazing devices I have ever purchased. Still not going to switch to Andriod Phones, I still prefer iPhone. But when it comes to TV devices its not even close on a scale from 1-10, Id rate the Nvidia Shield a 12 and the AppleTV a 3 or 4.

I also have a Shield and totally agree. Plus, Nvidia actually listens and responds to their customers on user forums. Indeed, best media player on the market at the moment.

Is the new device anything less than what Apple said it is?
Or less than the reviews or the discussions here said it was going to be?

Well.. Apple never said specifically what the Photos app would do, and I could find no mention at all of its capability in any pre-release reviews. I bought mine assuming the Photos app would be at least similar to the iOS and OSX Photos app. You know, the one with the identical name and icon..

There ARE issues with this black box. Enough to not buy one / return one? That's up to each of us. And each of us is entitled to a opinion in an open forum. I think.

Ok before i get called names by some people, anyone that saw my posts before getting this thing knows i was pro Apple tv and i though this was going to be great. I am returning this and sticking with Apple tv 3. This thing is complete mess, maybe it will improve but it is terrible. the only good thing is the remote and that is it

Well I am really happy with ATV 4. My only complaint is not with the ATV 4 but with the Content. I fully expected this. But I also knew that without the ATV 4 we could not get Apps. Now that we have an App Store I fully expect to see much more content/apps by XMAS and going forward into 2016.

yeah no content, like no podcast App , no radio App, features missing from other Apps, how can people excuse this crap and say they are happy with a box that is crippled

I'm looking on the positive side - at least its not as bad as the apple watch and can actually do "thing" ;)

I do not really use it but isn't the Radio App part of the Music App? Or is there another Radio App? I also do not use Podcasts but yeah, wonder what happened to that.

No there is no radio App equal to the last one. I know not everyone uses the Apple tv like i do, but every thing i used it for is worse

Why is there no categorized sections to the App Store!?!? You can't even really browse the available apps!

Here is the canned response you get from some, Well it was just released, how exactly is that an excuse for box that was announced two months ago and by the way they had intentions of releasing it a year ago

Lol. You should try posting something critical about it on the Apple Support Forum!

Standard responses from all the super-dudes with mega 'levels' and 'points':

"If you don't like it, take it back"
"The specs were published prior to release - did you not read them?"
"Apple never said it would have a podcast app"

etc etc ad nauseum. No wonder people hate us Apple users so much!

To be fair most of your complaints are 'early adopter' issues and will improve with time.

The last  tv didnt Improve with time.

I still think the  tv3 has more potential they never unlocked. What does this new one do that they couldn't get the old one to do with a update? It runs iOS. I just returned my  tv. If they improve it I will buy it again. I bought a 64 I'll go with. 32 next time. Honestly I think I might just use a Mac mini in place of this
