For anyone here who doesn’t get it, this is a huge deal.

I have a live-streaming video studio. Last week I finished a show for an association that involved online presenters and advertisements for several large corporations. Each of them paid a LOT of money for their ads to be seen by the audience and if there was an orange dot overlaid on their ad or the live segment of their CEO answering questions, I’d have been in big trouble.

(Big trouble = I lose that job next year)

My studio has 3 permanent Macs installed in it and there are 2 others that sometimes get plugged in. All of their leases are ending soon and if there’s not an answer to this by then I will be forced to switch to PC.

I do not want to do that but my business will absolutely suffer next year if my clients start seeing weird dots on their online productions.

For everyone with a stupid joke comment here - cool - but Apple’s going to lose a lot of high-end clients if they don’t fix this.

Did you read the article?
“In our particular case, this means that this orange dot appears on the stage output, which is totally unacceptable for anyone using macOS as a professional video tool that sends video output to a video projector
That’s what I’m trying hard to understand. Why is it “totally unacceptable”?

While some people don't notice things like that, many will. They'll see the tiny dot and starting thinking about that rather than whatever the event is.

One of the major video projection platforms ProPresenter has a livestreaming component where you can input video and audio, so now when doing so in Monterey their video / lyric output will show this orange dot on the external display. Professionals know their inputs are in use and don't need a reminder.

No one is saying disable the feature fully. Just only show it on the main screen or add a toggle to allow a single user to change whether it shows up on external displays or not.

I would imagine a toggle to disable the dot for fullscreen / external displays will be shortly on the way, in the meantime, there's already a simple terminal command it seems.

As a professional Mac user, I'm always one macOS version behind, and would advise others to do the same, whenever WWDC comes along and a new OS version gets announced, is when I finally update to last years version. This works wonders as you get a matured and a lot more stable OS with the new features added on its 3rd or 4th cycle of refinement.

Is it really though? Like let's be completely honest here, this isn't as big an issue as apps using your mic without telling you.

Thanks for being “completely honest”, but have you considered the possibility that a security feature could be switched on or off by the user as needed?
Like we can do with FileVault, with the Password, with the Firewall, basically like we can for every other security feature?

And?

Sorry - this seems to be complaining for the sake of complaining. But I guess that's par for the course these days.

This year for Christmas I will ask Santa to make a luminous orange dot appear on your televisions every time you watch a movie.
Let me know when it gets delivered. ?

Ok, I made a flip comment early on. But look at the unintended consequences. For instance, if iPhones were easy to crack (law enforcement .. Yay!) then they would be profitable to steal, and life would suck for everybody. If there were no way to defeat the dot, I'd have a lot of sympathy for the people who need a dotless screen. But it is really important that the dot be on by default. If it were simply removed for the sake of a small number, it would have negative consequences for the other 99.9%. Apple is a company as interested in profits as anyone else. But their business is based on maintaining a reputation for trying to protect their users. (Whether or not you believe that reputation is earned, it's still important.)

Yes, I hope they provide a quick and easy password protected fix for those who need it. Just don't put everyone else at risk at the same time. Besides, AV people should be more aware than most that every mic is hot and every camera is on - and how dangerous it is to forget that. Any tool that assists in that determination is to be applauded.

Given the number of kernel panics I’ve had on Monterey (mostly the fault of VirtualBox admittedly) I’m surprised someone doing a live performance or critical presentation would update to the latest release so soon. I’d think it would be better to use something like an Apple TV for the video presentation aspects and route the sound to a mixing desk where a microphone can be mixed in. That way you’re not reliant on an OS that will reboot the whole machine if it crashes badly enough.

There are several options listed here that you can do to get around this small issue.
