also from my experience apple tends to over estimate shipping time and dates. I have gotten things as early as a week before the website says.

It switched from shipping on 9/21 to 2 weeks around 4:00AM. I ordered three iPhones and the first two got 9/21 but the third one was 2 weeks. I sure am glad I got up at 3:00 to do the ordering, even though I was unable to get into apple.com until around 3:45.
I got the same 2 week ship date so I than ordered directly from Verizon as well. I now just need to cancel my apple order.
That's interesting. When I tried the same with AT&T, they recognized I had already placed an order with Apple and offered me the phone at full price.
I wish I could do this. Unfortunately I can't cancel my Apple order and my upgrade is tied up so I'm assuming I couldn't order one from verizon til I can cancel Apples ugh.
So cant you just go into any store that sells mobile phones and buy it on Sept 21st? Why are you all pre ordering?? LOL I can understand if you get the first lot of orders which will ship it by the 21st but to actually wait a week later is crazy.

So cant you just go into any store that sells mobile phones and buy it on Sept 21st? Why are you all pre ordering?? LOL I can understand if you get the first lot of orders which will ship it by the 21st but to actually wait a week later is crazy.
Here only the Apple Store sells unlocked phones, ever seen the lines at the Apple Store for a new iPhone... many have learned the lesson never to wait in line for 8+ hours again .
When the 4s pre-order was announced I was late to place the order and they said 2 weeks but I ended up getting it the day of the launch. Might have been pure luck but hoping for the same this go around.
Happens every year. People must decide before ordering. Apple is the worst place to order since everyone thinks they're God.
I've always ordered via AT&T, eight minutes later I'm done, release day my phone gets to me first cause AT&T has FedEx ship to deliver before 10:30 am.
So I just stay home till then, grab the phone when it arrives and off to work I go. No problem. Got the whole day to enjoy it.

Because there will be limited number available. Ordered early and got it on the 21st. Just placed another order with AT&T and STILL getting the 2nd phone on the 21st.
Yeah I don't mind the delay its just throughout my ordering process it said the 21st. But after confirmation it magically changed to 2 weeks. Oh well.
I just read that apparently in the states the iPhone 5 wont be releasing the unlocked phones until a couple weeks after release..weird!!
Apple is known to overestimate shipping times. A perfect example is when the new Retina MBP came out. My brother ordered online, got the ships in 3-4 weeks and had the thing in 8 days.

That would make my day. Do you recall when you found out you would get it on launch day? I.e. did they send your shipping notification about the same time as the other folks who had pre-ordered with a guaranteed launch day delivery?

Ultimately, all you can say is "oh well". Nonetheless, it's frustrating... I had the same experience as you when ordering, even started my order over to double check that it said ships on the 21st, and it still defaulted to 2-weeks after it accepted my order. If it just would have been accurate when I started my order, I would have gone to ATT.com to order (which is STILL showing launch day delivery 5.25 hours later!) Crazy that Apple could have screwed up the allocation of stock so horribly.
Apple has two product cycles for the iPhone, and this is the major one. It's based on the 2-year contract lengths of US carriers.
The 4S wasn't a new design and not that many people were buying them.
The 5 is completely new and is being launched for the people whose contracts are up on the 4 and who were the original buyers of the 3.
You can't compare the two phones and you can't compare the two customer bases.

If you people don't realize that Apple wants you to line up at their store to purchase this phone you're clueless. They are creating a demand for something they have a very very high supply of.

But you can compare it to the 4 release since that was a redesign too. I was able to order it around noon and still got the phone delivered on launch day.
