20th Century Fox rarely (if ever) releases movies on in iTunes in HD.

Yea, boo to them. I wish they did.

Well at least I have my Star Wars Anthology on blu-ray though :D

Oops, looks like the movie studios forgot that if they don't provide customers what they want, there are easy (free) alternatives. And then they go around moaning about piracy. As long as they keep pulling stuff like this (removing Avatar from iTunes after releasing it on bluray, not providing HD options) I will have little sympathy for them. Their strategy is incredibly stupid.

Sounds like a realistic idea that will happen around 2013 give or take 3 years

As someone else pointed out, you can already get the 3D Blu-Ray.

Howeveer, there is a Panasonic exclusive that expires early next year, and then it will be widely available for probably about the $25 - and that will include the regular DVD, the 2D Blu-Ray, the 3D Blu-Ray, and a "digital" copy that's probably as good as the iTunes quality that you can load onto your favorite portable device.

I don't see who in their right mind would take advantage of this "awesome" iTunes deal knowing the real thing at much higher quality is right around the corner.

It is truly and utterly ridiculous, I agree. Studios only have themselves to blame for, for the rampant pirating of their content. I also find it incredibly frustrating to see content constantly reshuffled around in the iTunes store before and after blu-ray releases. I understand the studios' paranoia with digital distributed content, but like you say, this attitude just reinforces piracy.

Thrill Remover

Thanks, but I prefer to have my "suspension of disbelief" as complete as possible when watching a movie.

Or several months ago on Blu-ray.

While that is true, I was thinking the comment was in reference to downloading Movies through Itunes, and a 3d 1080p itunes downloadable movie release isn't anything that will happen in the far future, i am just speculating but since their isn't any news on the issue it seems like its very far away from happening.

Of course it does. Give people the opportunity to buy something legally in a format that suits them and they will. Deny them, and they'll pirate it. It took the music studios years to get it, it's astonishing that the movie companies still don't realise this.

Balloons.

When things pop in/out of the iTMS (or Netflix for that matter) isn't about studio paranoia, it's about the bottom line. People with more money than Apple and/or Netflix are willing to spend are buying distribution rights to this content and are negotiating exclusivity windows for their top dollar purchases. I would agree that traditional distribution channels are worried about streaming/downloads cutting into their revenue but the studios are just going where the money is and right now the big money is still with TV and cable so those guys will get first bite at the apple.

I read in the Guinness book of Records that every frame of this film took 48 hours to produce!

Thats actually AFTER NVidia created Weta a custom solution to handle the rendering of the film. Before then it was up to a week and a half per frame

Aside from that....

Has anyone found a way to purchase the HD version? I want it. I don't care if its the third copy of Avatar I will own I want the special features.

Also I don't get why people who obviously hate the movie are chiming in on this thread. Do better if you think you can.

Yeah, because downloading a compressed HD film with exclusive 'extra feature' is far more awesome than a cheaper 1080p Blu-ray and and additional disc for more features.

But then this is Apple were talking about. If you can download 'it', then 'it' is awesome.

looking at those prices ... bd wont go anywhere anytime soon

u can get the 3D+BD+DVD+Digital Copy Combo Pack for less than the SD download on iTunes.

It is a movie for kids (or teenagers if you prefer). With that in mind it is good enough for it's target audience.

It's not a movie for kids. It's a movie for everyone. It was nominated for 9 Academy Awards and is the highest-grossing film of all time and the best selling blu-ray of of all time.

Never seen a kids movie that did that.

Avatar was such a piece of **** movie. I have no clue why it made over $1B

Why do you say that? It's a great movie.

Don't get me wrong, the cinematography was amazing, but I don't think it was $1,000,000,000 good. I expected to leave the theatre with my mind blown, but I left feeling like I had every other time I went to the theatre.

Wierd, it left me mind blown and I didn't even watch it in the theaters.

As for the movie, the story was average. Derivative, but what isn't these days? The special effects, particularly in the 3D version, were spectacular. Truly a beautiful film.

Yes, the effects were great. Too many people were swayed by the grandeur of the presentation and completely ignored the recycled story and cardboard performances.

Is this Disney's remake of Dances With Wolves?

Oh wait sorry, that was Pocahontas.

LOL. Avatar is a remake of Pocahontas! (plenty of Avatar/Pocahontas plot comparisons on the web, of course they are virtually identical. Just replace "gold" with "unobtanium" and "Grandmother Willow" with the "Tree of Souls". haha. Don't even need to change the initials of the main character - JS (John Smith or Jake Sully). Don't forget to mix in some of Cameron's "Aliens" - the plucky hispanic military chick and the robotic combat suit!

Yes, children love bright colors and lots of motion.

Great, now I can watch those excellent performances and follow the intriguing story without those distracting effects...

LOL
