I personally would prefer this one myself.
It looks better.

Maybe I missed the joke, but this Axon thing and that Cooorui thing are similar to the point that they are probably the same device. Look at the ports, vents, everything. It's identical.

Judging by the website I wouldn't be surprised if this Axon thing didn't even exist, and really is just a scam.

I wish them all the luck in the world with Apple legal. I've wanted Apple to clone once more for a long time. Maybe this is the route cloners have to go. :)

No, they really exist, they are just not made by Axon.

Here's the one that Axon appears to be reselling.

The one I linked to has better specs and looks better.

They're probably trying to get enough pre-orders to get a bulk discount from the manufacturer K.R.T. (Coorui)

Hooray! Now OS X users can enjoy the same sucktastic "regular UI shoehorned into a touch device" that Windows tablet users have had for years!
But without the Wacom-quality stylus input that TabletPC users get.

If you really want a tablet that runs OS X, buy a ModBook. You'll have to deal with a stylus, because a precision pointing device is part of the OS X UI. Get over it.

If you can't afford a ModBook, buy a used TabletPC. You'll have to deal with Windows instead of getting OS X, but as long as you spend most of your time using applications (Photoshop, Manga Studio, Safari, etc) rather than interacting with the OS, you'll get over it. I have.

If you can't handle that, wait and buy one of these. But you'll hate the "touch" interface, because it is neither Apple's nor Wacom's technology. Both of those are very good at what they do; resistive touch screens are not.

Relax. Take a break. I'm not making a "case." This is a forum on MacRumors not a courtroom. Of course it's my opinion. There are no authoritative answers here. It's a discussion. Get it?

Don't waste your time with him. He knows exactly what you mean. He is just one of those people who like to be technical and argue for his enjoyment and to piss you off. Anyone with a brain knows that an iPad isn't a fully featured computer, a computer, technically yes, but it can't do half of what a laptop can.

But the 320 gig hard drive is pretty bad ass. I just wish they'd make a bigger iPad rather than going smaller. Can't justify an iPad when I have a 13" macbook and 32 gig iPhone, when the iPad is only 64 gigs. Would love to see an 11-13" w/ more storage..even if it's a little thicker.
I really wish Apple would do more to explain to users that the storage space in the iPad/Pod/Phone is intended as temporary storage, and not a place to keep your movie collection.

Who say's it's wrong if someone wants to keep their movie collection on their iPad. It's their device, they can do what they want with the 16/32/64GB of storage.

Having said that they should keep a backup somewhere :)

The Axon Dorodango

First Axon needs to first change the name to The Axon Dorodango. Dorodango is the Japanese are of polishing dirt and turds. Which, if this system ever reaches the consumer, it will surely be, a polished turd.

This is a potential big deal because some of us actually want to do content creation on a small, cheap machine, and you can't run any html editors (or any other regular OS X software) on iPad. On the other hand, without any guarantees, critical reviews, etc., etc. and with the slow processor and being restricted to OS 10.5, ...

Your requirements represent a small niche. Tablets failed because companies pandered to the geeks instead of mainstream users.

Want to do all that, get a Laptop.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! $750?

Before anyone actually considers buying this, think about what it costs to manufacture this tablet. I can guarantee it is under $150, probably $100.

If anyone really wants OS X on a 10" tablet, build it yourself. It's really not that hard. I did it myself, and it cost me about $300 (back then). If you want to see it, here it is:

http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/14/wind-u100-magically-modded-into-tablet-thing-ipad-ui-along-for/

As you can see from the picture, it looks terrible (build quality wise). Since then, most of the tape has been removed, and it's actually decent looking on the outside.

All you need is an old MSI netbook (Dell Mini, HP Mini would work) and a $79 eGalax resistive touch kit from eBay. 2010 netbooks with Atom Pinetrail processors don't work. Simply remove the keyboard, remove and dissect the LCD lid, run the LCD wire through the motherboard, place the LCD where the keyboard used to be, and put the plastic bezel (from the lid) on top of the LCD. Touch panel (plastic sheet, not a screen) installation is pretty self-explanitory with installation guides that come with it.

Cost me $300 to build. Now, you can find a MSI netbook on eBay (used condition) for about $150. Adds to just over $230 with the touch screen. Same EXACT specs as what this Axon tablet has. Only difference is this has a 160GB HD instead of 320GB..

Just my two cents if anyone is looking for a weekend project, and loves this whole idea of having an OS X tablet...

Problem: it does not work as a Mac. Lots of things do not work!!!

MAC OS X NETBOOK COMPATIBILITY CHART (JUST GET A DELL MINI 10V)
http://gadgets.boingboing.net/2008/12/17/osx-netbook-compatib.html

In summary: Apple should make a light and small (pocketable) Mac, either clamshell, slider or tablet. Maybe the MacBook Air mini will be that.

Again, what definition are you proposing?

Why can't you just admit the iPad is NOT a computer? Not even APPLE is marketing it as that. Even LOYAL iPad fans who love their iPad, have enough sense to say it's not a computer.

The iPad is a media consumption device. It's a gadget, a toy. It's awesome, but it's not a computer. A computer has things like USB ports, a physical keyboard, disc drive, open OS, etc. etc.

Please just stop it, your blind fanboyism is an embarrassment to Apple fans everywhere.

Who designed that?

Uglier than

Why can't you just admit the iPad is NOT a computer?

Because it is a computer by any reasonable definition.

Not even APPLE is marketing it as that. Even LOYAL iPad fans who love their iPad, have enough sense to say it's not a computer.

Oooohh. Some people that you've talked to that like iPads say they're not computers. Fantastic proof.

The iPad is a media consumption device. It's a gadget, a toy. It's awesome, but it's not a computer.

It's also a media creation device. And a document creation device. It can be used as a toy. It can be used for business. Just like a Mac or a PC.

A computer has things like USB ports, a physical keyboard, disc drive, open OS, etc. etc.

And some computers have none of those things. Not to mention that you can connect any of those things to an iPad.

Please just stop it, your blind fanboyism is an embarrassment to Apple fans everywhere.

 I haven't said a single thing in support of Apple in this thread. In fact, according to you, Apple disagrees with me.

Yep

This will probably sell like hotcakes to all PC folk who been crying for OSX for ages but on crappy second rate hardware. This seems to be really up their alley.

The only thing I can't do on an iPad that I can on "real" computers is file management, and I'm not sure that I really want to do that. iPad is a computer for all other intents and purposes, as are iPhones and similar PDA/Smart phone devices too AFAIK, some of which you actually can do file management. Hooray.

Exactly. And really you shouldn't be doing file management on a mobile device. It should be accessing and saving the files to the cloud, so when you sit back at your computer you pick up exactly where you left off.

I already have this working on my 3G iPad with the variety of office apps that support cloud file services like sugarsync, box.net, dropbox, mobilme etc.

This is the future, Apple is just forcing the issue a bit, kinda like the floppy on the all-in-one iMacs back in the day.

Funny, I do a portion of my work on an iPad. I guess it is because I must just be a simple minded dullard, doing simpleton work that requiring a PhD in math, statistics and biology.

Fun that, considering I can only consume media.

Why would MacRumors even bother making it a headline story? First, it is a lame device and on the top their site is like something someone just pulled it up together and it is not even professional. I doubt it is even a real device. Maybe someone is trying to measure some click through to see the interest level.

My first thought before reading anything but price: Any tablet priced higher than an iPad is doomed. See ya..
