Or...would the new Zune release coverage put the new iPod release in the back of the newspaper? Not sure which way it would go...

I'm quite sure of which way it would go. Are you a betting man?

I know which way I'd like it to go, but I also know that it's M$ we're dealing with...and wondered about what connections they had in the press.

If Apple always intended to release the new 6G/widescreen iPod at the same time as the Zune, why did they bring out the 5.5G so recently? It seems quite possible that the widescreen iPod is STILL not ready and Apple made a couple of enhancements to the 5G to try to maintain some momentum over Christmas.

Also, with the PS3 and Wii certainly attracting many Christmas shoppers' money, I would think that an expensive top of the range iPod wouldn't be as popular for presents as the 5.5G anyway...

yup, it would make sense to send out an invitation to a Apple/Steve Jobs Event, on the day the Zune is released. The event is for one week later, 11-21-06, one week before Thanksgiving.

As of today, the Zune might be too big, too slow, be a turd etc. but it will sell no less. More importantly it will steal market-share from the iPod. Not good. At least until it turns out to be not such a great product. That takes a few weeks. People will try it because it is cheap, promises wireless, is by MS. Likely shoppers would pickup a Zune over TG without anything new out by Apple.

It is for MS to fail over the next few weeks. Most likely they will just because of the obvious reason often discussed here: they steal + add design by committee + include crappy software + sell at loss and so on. None of those are good business decisions for the long-term health of your company. Anyways, I think there is a good chance Apple will introduce a new product within the next few weeks but what that product is going to be is the real question.:)

Apple & December

In recent history, say the last five years, has Apple ever released new products in the Holiday belt (between Thanksgiving(US of course) and Christmas)? Nothing for me comes to mind.

But I do recall that Apple has head the release of new products for MacWorld when you'd think that they just missed the boat of the holiday shopping season.

My thougth is that the Apple intro will take the wind out of the Zune's press releases. So, how about 6G iPod introduction date = Zune Intro date + 7 days.

Anyone?:p

My guess is that the 5.5G will still be around for a while even after the 6G is introduced. And breathing new life into the existing product makes for another sweep of media attention which keeps the sales rolling in. :)

Yes. I see your point, and I hope it's true that this is what Steve has in mind. The trouble is that we've been waiting so long for the 6G/widescreen that I've become quite sceptical at the chance of a release before next year.

Hopefully Apple is on top of this, though, since we all know that Microsoft don't need to make good products for them to be sucessful

7 days would be a strange amount of time to wait. Zune is released on the 14th of November. 7 days later, it will have already gotten all the press it's going to get. Releasing the day before, the same day, or even a day after would make a lot more sense. 14th is a Tuesday, so I say the same day, if at all (I think it's more likely we'll see it next year).

I don't think it'll be a replacement.

iPod 1G-3G
iPod photo 4G
iPod video 5G/5.5G
iPod nano
iPod shuffle
iPod movie

The iPod's 6G, IMO, would have a real good WiFi solution and maybe a 100G HD, but I personally expect something like that later on.

The iPod movie (as I would call it) could be released sooner (hopefully to blow the Zune out of the water) and get a head start on touchscreen and true video.

of course iPod movie could do music and the iPod video already does video.

the next step is to integrate a camera and phone. I think the way to do the phone buttons is with touch screen. Maybe the phone and true video will be in one because of the touch-screen?

then again, who knows.

rumors are cool

The iTunes 5->6 transition and iPod mini->nano transitions should demonstrate that just because something is new and/or successful it doesn't mean that it won't be replaced suddenly by Apple on a whim. :p

Well there was only a 3 month period between 4g monochrome and 4g colour screen iPod, so I wouldnt be surprised.

I wonder how they would approach the product matrix though?

Shuffle
Nano
iPod
iPod video

or

Shuffle
Nano
iPod Video

More than a bigger screen, I want better FEATURES in the UI. I want better ways of managing a quicklist (on the go kind of sucks). I want to be able to tag/mark tracks while im listening to them so that they appear flagged in iTunes. Now there is rudimentary text input for search, I want to be able to edit track tag info on the go. I want wireless syncing which would be useful for topping up podcasts, newly added files etc. Obviously syncing your whole collection wirelessly woudl take eons, but for new files and podcasts to be automatically synced would be superb. My podcasts would download overnight, and I take my iPod to work in the morning without even worrying about syncing and ejecting as all my latest podcasts are automatically on it. In the same way, I want an iPod to have presence detection so that when its in range of the Mac it shows in iTunes. I want Last.FM integrated! lol.

what device?

From the article: "His company’s device only comes onto the market shortly before then and would benefit hugely because the new iPod would sport a screen that filled the full side of the device and consequently offer higher resolution video."

Any guess what that device is?

I hear you. I sure hope that whenever Apple announces, that they are shipping and are available in the Apple store on the same day. And within days of Zune, I think that would make a huge impact for Apple. Ok, so how about 1 or 2 days after Zune.

I think it will be after for the notion of the last player released will have more staying power on people's minds. Those who aren't already predisposed to what we want... :D

Before Thanksgiving is my bet or nothing at all...

I believe like the earlier posts.

If it is gonna happen, it has to be sometime in the middle of November.

It has to happen before black Friday. I lot of gifts are bought that day. Making an announcement after black Friday would not make any sense at all.

They either do it before black Friday or wait until MacWorld.

Maybe Apple is thinking, lets make them buy all the current stock of iPods, then we'll launch the new iPod:rolleyes:

Yep - agreed.

I'm staying put with my 4G/60 until the 6G comes out, so take that Apple! Although I am warming to the idea of taking my video with me...

Why is no one mentioning...

Why is no one bringing up the upcoming 5 year anniversary of the iPod as a release date for the "True Video"/6g/Whatever-you-wanna-call-it? It would trump the Zune release, it would be in time for the holiday season and it would be the perfect way for Apple to show what they can do in 5 years of development. Kind of the "Re-birth" of the iPod, 5 years later.

Is there some grand reason the anniversary is out of the question?

Have you seen the billboards for the Zune? They look like they're from 1979. And not in a funky retro way, either. If that's their best shot, Apple has nothing to worry about.

Let me tell you...

I currently have an iPod 5.5, (because I had it replaced and they gave me the newer one) playing videos isn't as great as it sounds. I can only get about 1:45 minutes of video playing time. I use my iPod while riding the train to work everyday, and I can only view half of a two hour movie, because I don't want my battery to die before I get to work.

I think this is the main concern of Apple delaying the launch of this new iPod Video. They need to have figured out a way for the battery life to last at least 4 to 6 hours...:(

When Zune announced their date of 14 November, I did wonder if we'd see an Apple event invitation for around the same time to steal their thunder...

I was thinking that too. It would be a very Apple/SJ thing to do. Imagine the embarrassment. Microsoft working up their marketing people for the big Zune release and BOOM ... 6th gen iPod.

It'd be nice to see it around the iPod's 5th anniversary but I can really see Apple going after Zune with this one.

I'd piss myself laughing if they actually did this. Oh god, I hope they do. :D

iPod pro or somesuch

I have to assume that since Apple just released the 5.5G iPods, that if a 'true' video iPod is released, it will be as a 'super' iPod of sorts. This will be similar to when the iPod photo came out.

This is the only thing that makes sense to me, otherwise, why would apple put so much time between the two 5g releases, only to make them obsolete a month later???

This also makes sense in light of apple bringing down the prices so much with its last update, so that they can make room at the top.

so... who here feels sorry for the zune boys?

True, but the 80gig iPod has something like 8 hours of video playback..maybe it's 6.
