Yesterday and today I was thinking of buying an Apple Watch 42mm Stainless Steel Space Black. But, this has me wanting to hold off...
Good logic to apply for buying lotto tickets but how do you apply it to the :apple:Watch? Also do you not buy anything because of the minute possibility it may fail in same way?

This is now my 2nd Sport watch to have this happen. The first one had the problem just days out of warranty, but Apple was willing to send to the depot for what became a replacement.

QUESTION: What kind of adhesive can I buy/use to do it myself (and save the Apple $199 "repair")?

That's an excellent question. Mine was under warranty and in addition to that, it had unplugged a cable that caused it to remain locked all the time (sensors on the back) so I took the advanced replacement.

Good luck. My watch was still mint and it certainly crossed my mind how if out of warranty it sure didn't seem like it would take much to fix it.

In another thread, I picked out a couple Lock-Tite adhesives to try. One of them requires 500-degree heat to remove (if I remember right).

Finally happened to my wife's watch (my sport seems ok). Has anyone had their Hermès watch repaired at the Apple Store or Hermès store? I'm hoping the Hermès store will be more likely to exchange in-store rather than wait a week like I expect at the Apple Store.

"Finally happened to my wife's watch" makes it sound like it's a customary defect. It isn't as the vast majority of AWs still have their backs intact.

I think Hermes only repair/replace bands. You'd have to contact Apple to replace the watch body.

Had this happen to me last week. Sent it to apple (out of warranty and no AppleCare) all they asked if there was physical damage, there wasn't, they sent me a new watch for free(after I sent in the old one and they verified no damage). Worst part was getting beta back up and running... took me a solid 5 hours to get it all back to my back up on beta. Also was pretty bummed because I was on like a 250 days streak of hitting my goals... oh well new streak started.

I had the same experience this week. I'm a few months out of warranty and no AC. I was ready to use my Amex extended warranty, but called Apple first. The person I spoke with told me that they're trying to determine the cause and asked me about sunscreen, bugspray, lotions, showering with it, etc. They sent me a box to return the watch and my free replacement should be here soon.

The back separated from my black SS, purchased Dec 1 2015, production date October 2015, on Monday, just as everyone has described - taking the watch off the charger. It had not been submerged in water , but I do run with it and sweat profusely. I also wear sunscreen about every day on my arms, so that probably didn't help (the watch).

The replacement process was relatively hassle free, although it is annoying that it has to be shipped out. I was a bit disappointed to see the production date was a week before my previous model and that it came with a version of watchOS from October of last year, as well. I don't mind the age of the hardware for a replacement, but if there has been an improved back attachment process implemented on the production line, this one likely won't have it.

I guess I can try to sweat less and get a tan. :) it will be interesting to see if this one has a similar failure next year.

This happened to me today, but foolishly I didn't get Applecare. I'm debating on just waiting for the next version and maybe getting this one fixed afterwards. Total bummer either way.

My wife has a 38mm SS Apple Watch. She has had the back fall off four times, all while removing it from the charger. She is a very careful person, and the watch has never been immersed in water. My suspicion is that she wears a Milanese Loop bracelet and the magnetic pull strains the backing, which is held on by fragile glue. I have a 42 mm. SS with a chain link bracelet, and it has never happened to me. Apple is replacing my wife's watch once again. They acknowledge that it's a common problem.

I also have Milanese loop and I wear it everyday, including when I run. The band is soaked when I'm done and so far no issues with the back coming out. So I don't think it's a band issue.

Happened to me two weeks ago. I got my watch on launch day, so I was out of warranty. Took it to Apple store and they said they have a note about this type of issue, and said they will mail me a replacement in a week. Just got my replacement in about 4 days, and looks brand new.

That makes no sense physically and it's not fragile glue but defective glue.

I suppose that there's some difference between "fragile" glue and "defective" glue, but I wonder how you know which it is. In either case it peels off! The suggestion about the Milanese Loop was made by the "genius" at the Apple Store in Miami Beach who said that the watches returned to them for this reason had been worn with that band.

The backplate of my 42mm SS watch was quite loose, so I took it to a Genius bar and now they sent it for repair. On Apple's repair centre website it says they are looking for replacement units for my watch. That really bumps me out as I really miss my watch and my workflow gets heavily affected by the watch absence. On the other hand, I am hoping they can give me a 2nd gen as the stocks for the 1st gen watch are pretty much depleted. Well, let's see...
