I want to buy a MBP today , and also a Ipod! with the back to school program

Do you think it's worth to wait for the new 6G ipod?

I think the 6G iPod will come after the BTS program and after the iPhone hype.
my suggestion: order your MBP with an 5.5G iPod and sell the iPod on eBay when the 6G arrives.

A speed bump now, including a jump to the Santa Rosa chips would make sense for now, since it sounds like the new Intel Chipset and Penryn might ship with Leopard in October.

Will Penryn be ready in October?

So far, all Intel has said is Q3 2007, which gives them quiet a bit of leeway.

Anyone know (or heard) anything about the chassis being redesigned with a user-replaceable hard drive???

I remember expecting Penryn late this year... but then more recently I swear I saw somewhere that the desktop version (forget the name) would be out this year, while the mobile Penryn would be out early next year? I remember the wording was a little vague. What's the latest?

I just have a question for anyone who has used the 15" MacBook Pro with both the glossy display and regular. Is it worth it to get the glossy display?

I don't know which one to get. Thanks for any advice! :D

It's personal preference, but the way I see it, the glossy looks a little better (better colors, deeper blacks) in most settings... but a lot worse in certain settings (glare). That makes me like my matte screen just fine--especially if we're lucky enough to see LED backlighting, which supposedly improves color and brightness.

Comparing at a store is your safest bet--although stores tend to be lit more brightly than many offices/homes (which makes screens look poorer--especially if the countertop itself is lit from beneath).

Thing is, I've never seen a glossy MacBook Pro at any store I've been to; even the Apple stores.

glossy?

Congrats on college. Was this your first choice? Say hi to Professor Sheinkman when you get there.

I absolutely hate the glossy display, but obviously lots of people like them, so you have to go look at them. There is just too much glare for me. My wife would like to buy a macbook, but can't because of the glossy display. My parents too.

So it is not whether it is worth it per se. It is are you going to use it in situations where there will be glare? The glossy displays have more contrast, but not more "accurate" color.

15" LED displays will come sometime--Apple has said LED is their future. Are we certain they are not coming today? The rumored specs I've seen don't mention the backlight used.

Good question. Here is what the "Greener Apple" statement said:

We plan to introduce our first Macs with LED backlight technology in 2007. Our ability to completely eliminate fluorescent lamps in all of our displays depends on how fast the LCD industry can transition to LED backlighting for larger displays.

Since the screens on the iMac (and of course Cinema Displays) are the largest we must presume this means the MacBook or MacBook Pro. Going on Apple's latest scheduling efforts "in 2007" most likely means the end of December. I wouldn't be surprised if the MacBook gets these first (unless there actually is an ultraportable in the pipeline) since they have the smallest screens and college students are the ones that need freedom to work whenever and wherever the most (the MacBook already lasts longer between charges than the MBP).

Yep, Princeton was my first choice.

Well, one of my friends has a MacBook Core Duo, and I actually quite liked the screen. But then again, I'll probably be using the laptop a decent amount of time outdoors/ in direct sunlight, so matte's probably the best?

Another question: :p How long does it take for shipping from Apple if I buy a MBP from them?

I prefer the glossy screen for looks, but since I'm heading off to college too I'm thinking about reconsidering and getting the matte screen. I've seen just how reflective the glossy screen can be, despite how good it looks.

Shipping depends on 1) demand for the product, and 2) how fast you get to the order page. Can't really predict it because there's no telling how much stock they'll have. If they do have plenty of stock, I'd say you'd have it within a week of ordering it.

What I think it means, is that you have to be a college student now. For the education store, they'll just ask whether you're a teacher or a student. No proof necessary (I think.)

When I've tried to use the edu discount (at the two colleges I've attended) I've had to login with my university username/password in order to access their online Apple store for edu purchases (at apple.com). Nowadays you get a university username shortly after you accept admission, so that's all it should take.

The iPhone could still be added to the rebate once it comes out; last summer, Apple changed the rebate at least 3 times to account for new products (like the Mac Pro). The last revision was only a few days before it ended, to reflect the changed iPod prices.
I would be kinda surprised if the rebate did include the iPhone though, since Apple really won't have trouble selling every one thats made.

It typically goes down sometime around 6am PST, at least in past releases, and comes up an hour or two later. No promises though!

P.S. What kind of bag or carrying case are you going to get to carry it around campus?

I don't know yet  I'm thinking two things: One, I get a dedicated laptop bag (shoulder strap), which is my best option I think. Two, I get a good sleeve for the MacBook Pro and put it in my regular backpack.

Of course, I think I do get a laptop bag, then I will probably use that as my main bag anyway.

You?

If you are going to be reading text outside in the sunlight I would say go for the matte screen. (Ah, the romance of college:) ). But like I said, I'm pretty sensitive to glossy screens. I always buy at the apple store since there are two within 20 minutes of me, but my friend recently ordered a macbook and got it in about 4 days, so that is probably a good estimate.

I really want to find a laptop bag that's big enough for me to carry around my books and such in too so I can use that to carry everything. I really don't want to get a smaller laptop bag and have to carry around two separate bags. I posted a thread over in the Apple Hardware -> MacBook and MacBook Pro forum that's got some good links in it, but I'm still not sure.

hardly worth posting at this late hour, but this thread can serve as the playground for the last minute discussion/waiting.

Sure it's worth posting. You can't forget there are readers from EU and Asia like myself.

But it doesn't come cheap. $169 minimum?

I'm gonna buy one of those when I get my MBP (after WWDC.. :D), a couple friends of mine have them, they utterly love em. Yeah, they're a bit expensive (I'm going with the cargo mambo combo, large, $300~), but they're made incredibly well. Well worth it, I'm told.
