Maybe he uses it in a cave which really is his choice. ;)

I guess you can call my flat a dimly lit cave, more specifically, the man cave

Anyway, I do tend to watch movies in dark areas, like an airplane, or before going to bed at night. So yeah, not all of us spend 100% of our gadget time in apple store type lighting

Honestly, the most surprising take-away from this whole backlight bleed fiasco is how many units I've opened.....and how many have cosmetic damage or dings straight out of the box.

I've opened 3 (2 exchanges), plus one for my friend and they have ALL had a chip, ding, or scratch. Often three or four. It's sad, I'm still not completely satisfied but it's sort of like finding the "best" worst one!

For real.. i dont know what apple's problem is...

I was just going to live with it until I figured out one of the reasons for buying one is using it for Astonomy...

Will just wait until next year and supplies plentiful and *hopefully* QC is better....

I got my 3rd replacement today and it has light leek but very very less and I compared it with the in store iPad 1 infact it's better then iPad 1 , and I was assured that incase idont enjoy it I come anytime and change it , the display is not warm stall it's very bright infact blacks look very black and display is much much better then the first iPad 2 which I had.

My original iPad had bad backlight bleed. Went and got it replaced at the Apple Store. Got home and found that the new one was even worse than the original and found scratch marks on the back.

Went back to the apple store to ask for another unit and the first comment from the genius was "well what do you want me to do about it." I simply said that I was looking to get a unit that was not defective. I was then told that they "didn't think the iPad was the right product for me" and then insisted on giving me a refund rather than giving me another unit. When I asked for the manager, she simply said that "I wasn't worth opening another unit."

Up until today I was a huge fan of Apple and told everyone to buy their products because of the excellent customer service they provided. After today though I realize that their policy is now... "accept the defects in our products or go away"

Incredibly frustrated.

I should note that I was very polite throughout the conversation, did not demand anything and simply asked for a replacement or exchange under warranty.

So just an update to everyone on what happened.

I called into customer service, and after getting bumped around a few times I ended up speaking to a customer care employee, who apologized for the events at the store. He offered to send me a free leather smart cover as 'compensation' for the trouble, and ordered a new iPad for me.

3 weeks later (today) I received the new iPad, and unfortunately the entire left side has bleed, although it is now a very thin yellow line of bleed in weird little blobs along the side.

At this point I will probably hold off on doing anything else until I see on here that everyone is getting one that doesn't have the problem.

^^^ yes - just go in at least month before your warranty expires so that it gives you time to get a good one.

For those exchanging them in and out - you better check your warranty as it's usually the date from the ORIGINAL purchase...

Just received mine today (UPS) and it has some bleed on the left side. Like others, will keep it for the time being.

The left sides of these panels always seem to be the worst :(

I wonder if it's a design flaw and less of a production run issue.

Am waiting on an exchange iPad 2 unit to arrive at the Chicago suburbs Apple Store I went to on Saturday. The store was out of stock of my model, so it sounds like I'll be getting a brand new one out of the box.

The Genius I spoke to was terrific; he admitted he's only heard about iPad 2 light leakage, but hadn't seen one. Granted me a new one/replacement pretty much immediately.

Hopefully Tuesday of this week a shipment will arrive.

Bad iPad + Applecare = nothing.

Hi,

I got my iPad 2 last Saturday. Really bad leakage on two sides + smaller blotches on the other two. I went this morning to the Apple Store (NYC-Soho). The genius (John) took it inside. After a few minutes it came back and he said he couldn't see anything wrong with it. I asked him to go with me to the part where the "theater" is, which is a little darker than the genius bar. He couldn't deny the blotches of yellow and unevenness in all the sides of the screen, but he said that he could exchange it only once, but then I wouldn't be allow to return it, even if I was unhappy with the new unit. I replied that I would return it right there if that was the case. He talked with the supervisor, who replied "of course" when he asked if I could return it after my exchange. So he made a note in the repair order that I was allowed to one exchange and to return it if I didn't like the new unit. I asked if the Applecare I bought with the iPad made a difference, he replied "no". I said that I didn't care if I would get a refurbished unit, as long as the screen was acceptable. He said that there are not refurbished units because the iPad is a new product.

I am not OCD. I have the first iPad with a little bit of leakage, but it was not enough to bother me. This new iPad is so bad that it is distracting.

This is the first time I get a really bad attitude from an apple employee. I feel very disappointed about the whole experience.

for those of you who can't find a good ipad i really do feel bad for you guys. but in all serious at some point it is time to throw in the towel and live it for a few months or just return it for a refund and wait out the few months. once you get to 6 exchanges you're just wasting too much time and gas. and all you're doing is playing roulette on whether you get a good one. all of these are coming from the same production run. there is no recall of existing stock so until they are all sold the fixed ones aren't coming in. it sucks that this happened with the product but that is the reality of the situation. and beating your head against a wall returning it 10x isn't going to change anything

I agree with you and I have the same problem with the light leak. I think my big problem is the way Apple is handling it. As mentioned a few posts prior, the "geniuses" are not willing to concede that this is Apple's fault.
I took mine in and I was told (and I quote) "This is a manufacturing defect that happens with all LCD screens. It's not covered under the warranty. We can swap it out for your once, but there is no guarantee that you'll get a better one, in fact you might get a worse one. I talked to the techs in the back and they said that yours is actually one of the better ones we've seen."

This is so unbelievably unacceptable. I agree with the guy who everyone bashed about returning it. If I'm paying close to $800 for a product, it better be up to my standards. If it's not, and its the manufacturers fault, I expect to have a replacement until it is perfect.

I understand that there is a short supply of iPads out there and if the tech told me "listen, we don't have a lot right now but if you come back in a few weeks I'd be happy to replace it without a problem" I would have been fine. But for some high school 'genius' to tell me that its a known problem that is NOT covered and that I can only swap it once and gamble that it'll be resolved is absolute bollocks.

At this point I will probably hold off on doing anything else until I see on here that everyone is getting one that doesn't have the problem.

Why keep swapping out one low quality screen, just for yet another, low quality screen?

Just keep it for a couple of months until Apple decides to discontinue using that crap, and start manufacturing iPad 2s with higher quality screens, and they've had to many complaints and returns, I have no doubt that's exactly what they'll be doing. Hey! The new screens might even have higher resolution or retina display.

I'm not having any problems with mine, and I wouldn't find it acceptable either, but I would wait not only until the shortage issue is resolved, but I'd hold off for a few months to see whether they'll start installing better screens so I could get one of those.

that is disappointing to hear, the guy i talked to when i returned mine was very candid in saying that it is on Apple and that if he were in my shoes he'd just wait a month or 2 for the new production run to come in.

to me the biggest disappointment is that they aren't simply holding back current production runs, sell what is in the stores and then swap out the old production with the new production.

seems to be what apple would have done a few years ago, but now they act like every other company just tread water on an issue and not do anything about it, and only deal with it on an individual basis as people complain

Just got my 4th iPad 2, still has light bleed, but it seems less pronounced than the older ones. At this point i've given up, It's not worth stressing over anymore when every TV i've ever owned or monitor has had some degree of bleed.

Not worth the time anymore, other than the bleed the unit is flawless so I'll keep it, it's still an awesome toy.

I was at my local mall and decided to check on Genius appointments when plans I had on Saturday fell apart. I grabbed an appointment that was only 10 minutes afterwards. When I went in, I only had to wait about 5 minutes more. The Genius guy took my iPad 2 into a darker area in the back and came out very quickly saying he definitely saw my bleeding, though mine was only in the lower right corner. He grabbed a replacement in a brown box, like other people have gotten. I knew that if I took the replacement and ended up having another problem with light bleed, I could get a refund. So I ended up taking the replacement. I asked if I saw something in a little while, a month or so, if I could swap that out and he said I could keep swapping as long as my warranty was active. I don't think I see any light bleed with the new one, and if there was any, it would be a tiny bit in the very bottom of the device.

Here are the comparison of my original purchased iPad 2 on 05/14 and the replacement on 05/15. Sorry, that some of the edges are cut off (on the camera they looked fine). Also, on the replacement, that one spot on the lower left is actually worse than what the picture shows. These are taken in our living room, no lights, only the lights from windows, so not a completely dark room (the original was taken around 10am Sunday morning and the replacements were taken around 3pm today): Thoughts on keeping the brown-box replacement??

Your original was damn near perfect, I would have kept it. The replacement looks pretty good too. if it's excessive it's an issue, thats nearly non existent.
