Totally agree. No cherry picked iPads in the brown boxes.

Two weeks ago, I took a 'brown box' unit into the Apple store bathroom and it turned out to be the worst one I've ever seen. Of course, I rejected the replacement and ended up returning the iPad back to Sam's Club for money back.

Of course, we will never know if individual Apple stores haven't selected those brown box units with no or minimum bleed to offer to customers for exchange. The Apple genius I talked to at the Walnut Creek, CA, store assured me that this brown box unit would not have any backlight issues, and it doesn't.

I took my launch day iPad 2 in the other day to get exchanged. I knew it was inevitable that my screen would get a scratch somehow one day, and it did, so it seemed like a good time. The Genius employee took my iPad in back and came out a few minutes later confirming that there was light leak. He swapped it out with a brown box model for me. There is still very minor light leak, but nowhere as bad as my original unit. The screen has a much warmer hue than my old one but I'm sure I'll get used to it. He also took the time to note that this was a one time replacement and that I cant exchange it again.

sent mine to apple the other day. just checked my support page and they are returning it back to me as they couldnt replicate the problem.
i am now on chat and gave them a link to the photo and the guy is agreeing with me but support is now closed so i will have to call tomorrow.

My iPad will be arriving tomorrow... hoping it'll have a decent screen. I'll be sure to post how things turn out.

Got mine Wednesday! White 3G ATT 64GB. Screen bleed at bottom small area to the left of the home button about dime sized. It is apparent at 50% but only if you are really really looking for it. I'm keeping it! I love it!

DLXFW

Basically a little better than extractors but on the left side not the right. Same thing though.

Thank you for choosing AppleCare Service.

Our technicians have performed full diagnostic checks on your IPAD 2 and have been unable to reproduce the symptom(s) you reported when you requested the repair. As a result of our tests, we can confirm that your product meets Apple specifications for performance, usability, and functionality.

As a part of our assessment and test procedures, your product has had the latest software and firmware updates installed. It is now being returned to you, and you should expect to receive it within two business days along with a letter that provides details about our assessment as well as useful troubleshooting tips.

The two brightest spots are clearly visible with the brightness set at 50% in a darkish room.

I purchased it on launch day, 25th March 2011, reported the problem shortly afterwards, but decided to delay swapping the iPad until I was reasonably sure the problem had been addressed.

I'm not after a 'perfect' screen, I never have the brightness set at anywhere near 100%, but this is not acceptable.

I could have gone through multiple iPads, but decided to wait, I thought I was being reasonable, but look where it has got me.

I will be contacting Apple again tomorrow!

Brown box units come in sealed boxes and there is no way individual Apple stores go through them to pick out ones without backlight bleed.

Blargh. So I was looking at my ipad and, while it's good on bleed, I just noticed there are a couple little specks of white lint or dust or something under the glass. I didn't notice them before; not sure if they're new or not. Sigh. It took a lot of effort to find one that didn't have poor brightness, color cast, or dead/stuck pixels but this does bug me -_-

Same with mine. Just live with it. As long as you can't see them when the screen is on, don't worry about it. You're never going to find a perfect iPad...guaranteed.

One piece I can kind of see and it almost looks like a stuck pixel (but it's the dust being transreflective or something). Not really worried about the other ones. :(

realized one thing that coming straight to genius bar makes it's easier to get a replacement!

mine is a keeper! :) no backlight bleeding, dead pixels, etc. guess i got lucky.

Nice. Would you mind letting me know what the first five letters of your serial are? I think my iPad is also from the same batch, since we have the same shipping schedule with UPS. I'm hopeful mine is also a keeper :)

DN6FVM

definately a keeper compared to other peoples iPads :) i was worried i would be getting one with major backlight bleeding but nope.. not the case here.

you're like my twin!!! i got the exact same letter! hence i called them up last night thru their website's chat support and i linked them to the photo and the guy agreed with me and he put it on my support notes and asked me to call this morning to get it escalated.
so that's what i did this morning and they said since the ipad was on its way to me - to just wait for that then contact me using using a different case ID she gave me and they will do a direct replacement.
i would suggest you do the same and go on chat support and link them to a photo. or upload the photo and give the link to them on the phone.

I know... but since a lot of people are being told about this stupid one time replacement, i thought i would use their online service first (rather than drive 30miles one way) and if i dont get results, then i would drive the distance. so that is my plan B! :D

btw - mine arrived today via UPS but i was at work so girlfriend picking it up from their depot first thing tomorrow morning. then i can maybe call apple and arrange for either another pickup or an exchange.

I also tried 'live chat' to email a photograph, but all they advised me to do was call Applecare, which I did today. Coincidentally the returned iPad arrived at my place of work whilst I was waiting on the telephone.

I spoke to one of their representatives, who quickly passed me on to a supervisor. I then emailed the second photo, in my earlier post, and he agreed that it was unacceptable.

It is clear that Apple are playing down this issue, which I believe is their official line, and that they have instructed their representatives not to acknowledge it as a known issue. Hopefully it is now being rectified, judging by some of the recent posts on here.

He did say that a few isolated issues can be exaggerated on the internet, I pointed out that there is a discussion about this on the Apple website, it is currently 70 pages long!

Anyway, they have agreed to sort the problem out, the photograph I emailed has been attached to my case and he did say that if I wasn't happy with the outcome I should contact him again. I have to say he was very helpful.

I've had numerous Apple products in the last few years, a few have had problems, but in my experience Apple usually comes through in the end, although you have to be prepared to complain, politely, but forcibly.

If the emails sent to me and Muscleflex are standard ones, I would suggest that anybody returning an iPad for repair/swapping take a photograph of the issue first.

Today I went to the Apple store and upgraded my iPad 2 32gb to the 64gb wifi one..I brought it home, went into a dark room and WOW the bleed was HORRIFIC..it made my old iPad that I upgraded from look absolutely PERFECT..so tonight I am taking it back(I only bought it a few hours ago) and will get another one..no way do I expect this kind of garbage. I understand there is no such thing as perfection but for God's sake I dont accept an iPad with screen bleeding everywhere so will see what happens tonight when I go back

Okay, so as I mentioned before I can see one of them...unfortunately. I tried a 'genius bar' replacement but, while I didn't see any dust (who knows maybe I would have seen it later?) it was dimmer and the color was kind of off in comparison, plus it had substantially more backlight bleed. I held my ipad up to the various display models in the store and every one of them was dimmer and had a bluish color cast in comparison. I ended up going home with the one with the dust problem. Maybe I should just do a return and try to buy a new retail one again, and then go through that roulette. It seems like the DN6FTs are pretty good and they're using this brighter screen but who knows. I've seen quite a few units with this dust problem it seems. I thought it was a stuck subpixel problem but now I'm thinking it was dust under the glass on the ones I've seen.

I'd like to know about the poor color etc..
My first and third looked good. Blue white cool screen.
Second one that was unacceptable had a ton of brightness and weird contrast I thought. I could have been preoccupied with the big faded light areas and just thought it was crap.

I believe the third and final one has the little half dime to the right of home key like first one. And the screen colors look good even the slightly different serial numbers.

Haven't really seen a yellowish one. Can anyone elaborate? Serial number?

Side note: if we buy these things and live on them and don't use our desktops much now shouldn't we deserve something that looks decent - not perfect but at least decent.

The pics I'm seeing of screens on here are horrific. They shouldn't just tell us tom live with it. I was told that but luckily last one was ok. That's just crap apple produces a product with a worse screen than the cheapest netbook.

The guys at the apple store are getting trained to be nazis on this.
The stores are full of spotlights. You cant see the worse screen bleed till you are in your living room with lights just dim.
I made them go open the box and check it and he said it was bad and was going to return it to apple. Next morning I just was given one with the one return lecture like I'm to blame for wanting no bleed.

It makes it not even fun to own almost cuz of the attitude and defects.
Just think if you bought a car and all the others ran crappy and you got one didn't. You would still think the car is a crappy model.

The brown box iPads are hit and miss. I really don't think they even look for screen bleed.

If you have excessive bleeding go in and tell THEM that you only want to do the return thing once and THEY better have a good one for you and to check.
Sorry for rambling.......

just came back from a retailer here in the philippines. i've been through 5 ipad2 since 2 weeks ago, out of those only one was bearable. we need 2 so i am still searching. 2 units of p= bleeding and dead pixel one each. 1 unit t= bright spot of white not a dead pixel but its weird, 2 units v= 1 acceptable with bleeding but not too much and 1 with a gray thing on the screen. the guy working there actually had the balls to tell me its not noticeable if you don't look at it close enough its pretty small, he was talking about the dust. is he nuts?? does he expect me to forkover a ton of cash for a 64gb wifi 3g and then be expected not to look close enough? good thing the girl there was nice and she gave me a refund.

went to another retailer reserved a w unit but decided not to even check it since the guy i talked to was an ass. i was asking for reservation just for the day, then out of curiosity i asked the 5th letter of the serial number he said why? i said i just want to know the week it was made can't i even see the unit in the box im not going to open it im just going to look at the box. After a whole lot of fuss from him and the manager they finally showed it to me, so i reserved it for the day since we were planning to shop around first before coming back. then i asked how many units do you have left because my friend might get one too since they kept repeating that a lot of people were buying blahblah, he wouldn't answer me. another worker said she just wants to know how many are left, the guy still refused to answer he said, why do you need to know? we can't say how many we have left. jeez???!! wtf is wrong with these people?? got annoyed thanked them and didn't even bother to get it anymore.

by sms another store was nice but kinda funny, i was asking about the return policy if i'll order from them he said he can't exchange them even if i see the defect on the spot i have to go to apple. i asked how come? he answered well, it hasnt happened so far and we already sold 50 units, i told him what happened to me with the other shops he answered wow! i guess we were lucky! we havent have anyone complain yet. he finally agreed that if ever i get from them and i am not satisfied he will issue a refund not a replacement.what a day... sorry for ranting =)
