You did the right thing by returning it. I posted earlier in this thread about how my backlight bleeding doesn't bother me. That's because mine has a very small, very faint yellow smudge in one corner of the screen. Mine doesn't look anything like the pics that you posted. Not everyone has the same degree of backlight bleeding.

So newb question but what's an easy way to bring up a black screen so, if needed, I can do it in the Apple Store?

Go to camera app. Cover camera lens. Snap pic and view inside photo library. Tap once on screen to remove control overlays. Turn up max brightness. It's best to shoot the photo of your LCD before you go to apple store. Taking a picture of it u can show the genius staff much more effectively.

They weren't replacements - they were new shrink wrapped retail ipad boxes. I know what the service replacements look like they are not those. I feel bad knowing so many people were in line still awaiting their first ipad but I waited day one for 6 hours+.

I just came back from the Genius bar at the Apple store on West 14th, NYC. I was lucky enough to get hold of a 16GB black wifi unit from B&H on West 34th this past Sunday after a tip from this forum. Unfortunately, my screen has the dreaded light breeding from the lower edge with two half-moon spot lights to the right of the menu button. B&H has no stock to replace it so I called and made an appointment with the Apple store.

The Genius lady verified the problem under a table and said she can order a service replacement unit within 3 to 5 days, mostly likely this Friday. I was worried about the term 'service replacement' but she assured me that it will be a new unit pulled from a box and not a refurbished or re-manufactured unit. She said the item is purchased from B&H so they can't replace it with a branded new shrink wrapped box in store.

So my question is - what is your experience with service replacements? I went ahead with the work authorization because I still have time to return the unit to B&H for a full refund, I already have a RMA. If the replacement unit still has light breeding problems or it doesn't look new, I will just refuse it at the store.

I would do the following: RETURN to B&H for full refund. While that's processing, go to apple retail and buy one (that's assuming NYC apple retail has any retail left). Then open up the box and see if you have any problems - it's just best to come back in a few days if you are uncomfortable with returning stuff.

When you get home, verify if your problem is that bad - turn up the brightness all the way MAX. If it is, then schedule appt with genius and take it from there. If you buy from apple retail, it's so much easier for them to deal with exchanges (shrink wrap) rather than a service replacement which is most likely NEW since the iPad is so new but what then when you get that replacement it has the same issue??

Good luck!

iPad 2 hasn't been on the market long enough for Apple to offer you anything other than a brand new iPad 2 as a replacement. But because it's a replacement and not an exchange, you're not getting the new box, printed materials, dock cable, and charger.

I think your plan is perfect. If the replacement has any issue (including screen bleed), then refuse it at the store and proceed with the B&H exchange. That's what I would do, exactly.

Yellow smudges go away on their own. It's from a manufacturing chemical that hasn't evaporated yet. It will.

I went to the Genius Bar today and the Genius told me that the bleeding will go away within a week. It is because the glue/adhesive hasn't finished setting in the bezels.

That's contrary to what the genius said who handle the exchanges for me. The yellow may go away but not the backlight bleeding. He even said it's a defect.

The backlight bleeding will not go away. This is a common, but unacceptable, issue with many LCD displays.

Here is mine on an iPad 2 White...

It's weird that the backlight leakage doesn't show in the pic; but I see it clear as day on the iPad???

Picture with camera.

With the iPad camera or a stand alone camera?

Because it looks like you either:

A) Held down the home and sleep buttons and took a screen shot

or

B) closed the smart cover on the back camera and took a picture.

Neither method will capture a defect with the LCD.

I did option two. What a good method?

It's not going to be easy to find a new retail box to buy in NYC. I already put in a lot of leg work(two trips to the Apple store, 1 trip to Best Buy) before getting this unit from B&H. That's why I am reluctant to just give up and return it for a refund.

I figured too I have nothing to lose by waiting a few more days to check out the replacement unit at the Apple store. She said I can examine it before making a decision. The only downside is that if I accept the replacement, I won't be able to return it for a refund at B&H later if anything else goes wrong. The SN# of the replacement Ipad and the retail box will be different.

We will see what happens. Thanks for the responses.

Is that light leaks or the glue/yellow spots?
HELPP! D:
When is a good day to go to Apple for an exchange brand new unit?

Honestly, I think you should keep that one. You don't have that serious of an issue and could risk getting one with worse leaking. Most LCD screens leak, and that one is pretty manageable. Plus, how often will you be looking at a blank screen in the dark...

So I was the one with the kind of poopy screen near the top of page 18 (the one with House playing). I made an appointment at the genius bar for tomorrow. Any tips on how to persuade a genius to replace it for me? Because I feel like I've been branded as a crazy ocd person after this iMac fiasco I had (the genius lectured me for 10 minutes about how they weren't robots who could make everything perfect for me ). Plus I had the first gen iPad with bleeding issues and the geniuses refused to acknowledge the problem, so I ended up returning it and eating the restocking fee :( I have the photos of the problem saved on the iPad itself and a black image on the photo album to help them see better, but I have a feeling the geniuses will have an "oh come on you should feel grateful to even have an iPad 2... stop whining and just use it" attitude... :(

That is EXACTLY how mine looks.

It honestly isn't that bad, you need a pitch dark screen to see it. Even watching a movie you can't see it really, unless you are actively looking for it.

I think I'm gonna wait it out a few days and see if it goes away and/or if it bothers me anymore than it does now. Then i'll make a decision to exchange it or not.

Wow! My backlight is very small, and would have never noticed if I did not read the threads. Now i see it on my Mac book ....LOL I hope it does not bug me.

JUST got home to open up my brand new 32 Gb AT&T...and holy bleeding!

Well this just sucks...

I certainly did not have this with my iPad 1. Since this is also the first I'm reading on this issue with iPad 2's...how does the severity of mine compare? It's noticable...and annoying...but I bought it direct from AT&T, so it's not an easy in-out exchange at an Apple store.

Thoughts?

First pic is at just regular default brightness with auto-bright on. Second pic is at 100% brightness.
