JUST got home to open up my brand new 32 Gb AT&T...and holy bleeding!

Well this just sucks...

I certainly did not have this with my iPad 1. Since this is also the first I'm reading on this issue with iPad 2's...how does the severity of mine compare? It's noticable...and annoying...but I bought it direct from AT&T, so it's not an easy in-out exchange at an Apple store.

Thoughts?

First pic is at just regular default brightness with auto-bright on. Second pic is at 100% brightness.

That's incredibly unacceptable! Return that piece! It looks like someone is shining flashlights on the edges in at least 4 spots. Mine better not have this when it arrives!

I am sorry that you have to join the club. Yes, it sucks to find this kind of flaw on a new toy that you are very excited about. And I am sure it was no easy task to actually bring one home this first week.

The two bright spots on mine are like the one on your lower left corner of the first picture at 50% brightness. I was too nervous to even turn it up to 100% brightness to see what else shows up, lol.

Got my Black 16GB from Apple today and there is definite backlight bleeding....

I should've sold this on eBay and waited a few weeks. I also had the yellow screen issue with my iPhone 4 last year at launch. I must be lucky.

I also just noticed my casing also has a scratch next to the headphone jack. Apple really did rush these out for launch.

Seems like this backlight bleeding is a bigger problem than I thought.

I made an appointment with a Genius tomorrow, I figure what the hell i'll take it in and see what they say. If they have a replacement, then I'll have them bring it out and open it and hope it's better. If they don't have a replacement, then i'll keep mine for now.

Wow! My backlight is very small, and would have never noticed if I did not read the threads. Now i see it on my Mac book ....LOL I hope it does not bug me.

I know! I think this thread made me more OCD. My MBP has some leaking around the edges that I noticed a long time ago but got over it. When I read this thread, I noticed it on my iPad and I honestly cannot tell whether it bugs me or not! The fact that I know it's there bugs me more than actually seeing it lol

I need to stop coming to this thread :O

I just tested mine and I have some bleeding as well. Guess I will head over to best buy and see if they have another replacement.

Does anyone know the return period for iPads? I just want to make sure I get it exchanged before the return period.

I went through the process of returning the iPad online and it says there is a 10% restocking fee.

Really? I thought Apple got rid of restocking fees. You have 14 days to return, no questions asked. But I guess I'm unsure about the restocking fee now  It would say that it costs 10% on the sales receipt, which I noticed they took out.

Anyway, my question kind of got buried so I'll repost it here. Sorry for spamming

So I was the one with the kind of poopy screen near the top of page 18 (the one with House playing). I made an appointment at the genius bar for tomorrow. Any tips on how to persuade a genius to replace it for me? Because I feel like I've been branded as a crazy ocd person after this iMac fiasco I had (the genius lectured me for 10 minutes about how they weren't robots who could make everything perfect for me ). Plus I had the first gen iPad with bleeding issues and the geniuses refused to acknowledge the problem, so I ended up returning it and eating the restocking fee :( I have the photos of the problem saved on the iPad itself and a black image on the photo album to help them see better, but I have a feeling the geniuses will have an "oh come on you should feel grateful to even have an iPad 2... stop whining and just use it" attitude... :(

Some bleeds have a yellow tinge to them.

I don't believe it could actually be that bad. (Not as in a personal perception of the issue, but as in, it actually isn't that bad) Someone should at least hang on to them and wait to see if their "bleeds" go away.

So I finally bit the bullet and bought a white 32GB iPad 2 from a guy on CL. He accidentally bought the Wi-Fi model and his wife wanted the Verizon 3G. I paid a slight premium, but it was worth it not to wait 5 weeks.

Anyways, i have a small light leak on the bottom right, but it's nothing compared to some I have seen here, so I will probably be OK with it. I have a problem that I do not like. There is a mark (maybe unset glue?) under the display on the top right. Is this something that will go away once the glue dries? Or should I take it into the Apple Store for a replacement?

The Apple logo is the reflection from my iPhone. The mark is on the edge of the display on the top right. It's an irregular shape.

UPDATE: Took it into the Apple Store and they gave me a brand new iPad, no questions asked. Great service. The new one has no "blobs" and minimal bleeding. Overall, very happy!

That definitely does not appear normal. It might go away, but it's not like the normal "yellow glue" stuff that people experienced on the iPhone 4.

does anyone have one that doesn't have backlight bleeding? Or has anyone gotten it exchanged for one without bleeding?

This almost seems like someone high up (Legal?) needs to decide once and for all what is considered a faulty product?

There must be a line where an acceptable line is crossed and the product can be deemed officially faulty.

Of course, buying direct from Apple so you can return it, is fine, but buying from someone else means you could end up in an argument in store with someone who thinks you are just being too fussy.

I can accept very slight graduations either along a side or towards a corner, but we're talking a slight graduation. Not what looks like circular hot spots.

My problem I know is that I almost always use my iPad in a very dark room at night. only small lights are in the room, so it's very dimly lit. How I like it.
I know this is going to make any issues stand out a lot more that would never be seen in bright daylight.

last night i was using it at night and watching a movie and had the brightness set to 0% and still I could notice it. That's when I decided I'm done and I'm not putting up with this. So today appt with "genius" we'll see how it goes.

I did not notice mine had bleeding through 4 days of use. The first time I powered it off, and during that process the screen goes black, but is still backlit, I noticed the bleeding. :(

So is it a REAL issue if during normal use you can't see it? For now I will use it, and with AppleCare if necessary, swap it out once more are available. I am surely not returning it to be "iPadless."

If you can't see it in normal use I dont' consider it an issue.

Haven't noticed any on mine during normal use.

Only time I saw any is watching a letterbox netflix movie in bed. And then I only saw it when I turned off the lamp (which I'd generally leave on while watching video as the screen hurts my eyes in the dark). Even then it was minor bleeding, not as bad as pictured up here. Just a tiny bit in two corners.

So I think there's nothing I can't live with on mine since I don't notice it at all in normal usage and it's very minor even in a dark room. I'd definitely exchange if it was as bad as some of the pictures posted in the thread though as if mine went up that far it would really be annoying with a letter boxed movie and probably noticeable even with a lamp on.

If they have they haven't posted.

It just seems some have very bad bleeding that goes way out on the screen and is very noticeable. And some are like mine that is only noticeable in the dark and even then doesn't extend out on the screen.

I'm guessing some bleeding is just inevitable from the way they made the iPad and just have it glued together and not put together with clips etc. like the iPad 1.

But maybe it's just a glue issue and they can fix it going forward. But honestly, I kind of doubt it. At most they'll get on it and deal with the ones that have major bleeding, but I doubt we'll see many units that have NO bleeding even at 100% in a pitch black room displaying a black image. I think they made a design decision that some bleeding was ok as long as it's not noticeable during normal usage. Unfortunately they've messed that up in manufacturing as many pictures have showed bleeding that was visible when watching a video etc. even with a light on.

If you have to test it, you don't have a problem. Do you see it while you are normally using the device ?

NIce job Mac Rumors

Exactly. Hey everyone, look at yourself under a microscope. You are all full of deadly germs!!! OMG!!! ;)
