Won't it be a month or two before refurb units start showing up? It seems pretty early in the iPad 2's life for them to be making refurb units. It hasn't even been out for a week, so I doubt they have been able to get defective ones sent in, disassembled, and then used to make refurbed units.

I would think any replacement you get for the next month or two would be brand new iPads. They also seem too swapped to divert resources to assembling refurb units when there is so much demand for it.

First off, I'd like to thank Apple, Inc. for having retail stores.

Secondly, I want to thank the trainers at Apple Retail for being so damn professional, it makes me wonder why the hell would anyone buy an apple product from anywhere else!

Thirdly, I'd like to thank the wonderful staff at the retail stores for being beyond accommodating to me for the brand new exchanges. It's not even a warranty thing anymore.

For those who say this is a "normal" problem, you are half right. But if you are seeking for a good ipad 2 without the lcd light leak issues, you have to

return until you find it. I'm very positive there is hope for all you folks who have bad defective LCD's and you guys are just in denial if you don't think it's a problem!

On the LEFT is an iPad 2 black 16GB - the right is an iPad 32GB WHITE. This is BEFORE EXCHANGES - this is FULL BRIGHTNESS:

After having the staff help me go thru FOUR (4) BRAND NEW IPAD 2's (literally opening them up new in shrink wrap and then testing for me in their "lab") - I was able to secure ONE very good iPad 2 and ONE that still has issues. I WILL RETURN the 16GB black model but not at this time because I feel it's gonna be a while before I come across a good 16GB model.

This is AFTER the exchanges (again 16GBbalck on left, 32GB White on right; both FULL BRIGHTNESS):

The 16GB still has issues - but the 32GB White is almost clean. I'm so happy for at least one good one. I'm telling you guys who don't believe this is a real issue that if I'm able to secure a good one (on the right), this is truly a defective batch of iPad 2's.

Thank goodness for these exchanges - these weren't even replacement units - they were fresh off the truck models in shrink wrap. Apple has gone thru much lengths to accommodate me and I am so happy about the service, I want to let you all know that Apple stands behind their products. Even the genius I was working with said it's defective obviously. So there you have it, defective LCD's in the new iPad 2. I'm gonna just use my 1 year warranty and get a service replacement on the 16GB black 6 months from now when the kinks hopefully are ironed out.

Good day everyone!

Just letting you all know that now is the time to return for you will get a retail shrink wrap e.xchange instead of a service replacement. Are they the same? Hell no! I don't want a service replacement under 14 days. No way. Even if it works the serial number is a service replacement number. May hurt resale value in the future too. Go now and get a new retail shrink wrap exchange and be done with it. My new white iPad is near flawless and I'm done worrying about it. Or else I would be tossing and turning at night going back and forth on whether I should return and end up with another crap one.

Return now and don't wait!! Demand service from apple retail!!

Really people are saying "you're just looking for stuff to complain about"... That's unreal, paying $499+ for an item and settling on anything less than perfect just means you have more money than brain cells and I can't even believe it's been suggested or said. It doesn't matter if someone had to open 100 to get one that doesn't have the issue then so be it. I'm going to be taking my 32GB Verizon one back to the best buy store today. Noticed the problem immediately after opening and viewing a movie but assumed it'd go away, it hasn't and is only gotten worse/more noticeable.

Anyone know what will happen with the data plan I already purchased? Will it easily transfer to the new ipad?

Thanks

I'm holding out on getting mine until April/May if this problem is as widespread as it appears to be. I wonder if Apple will make an announcement and address the issue?

I didn't watch a huge amount of movies or TV on my iPad 1, but I gamed a lot, read a lot of magazines/books. If I were an owner of a unit with leakage, I would hold onto it until the issue is fixed- then take it back, since you have a 1yr warranty.

My 32 wifi suffers from light leak. Not as bad as some. I even took it to an Apple store yesterday and the staff there was rather surprised at this issue. They were very nice and the service was great. They were ready to exchange it for a brand new one but did not have a replacement. I was told that I will get a call when a replacement shows up. I'm a little nervous I'll get something worse but we shall see. I'm holding out hope that it gets better with time but I think that's wishful thinking.

What I don't understand is this acceptance of this issue. Blotchy LCDs with poor black levels are nothing new (that's why I own a Kuro) but some of the pictures I've seen here make me cringe. I do like the plasma idea. ;)

Ask them to show it to you before you switch...i'm pretty sure you can do that?

I honestly think its denial.....people don't want to admit or deal with the fact they have to go in for an exchange

It's less denial and more people just not wanting to get into an exchange cycle where they burn through 12 exchanges and still aren't satisfied.

It took me 3 exchanges to get a 32GB WiFi that didn't have either a dead/stuck pixel or dust under the screen. The one I have now has some minimal light bleeding (as did the other 2) but there's no way I'm returning it and risking something worse.

Another genius bar appointment... Hopefully this time I'll walk out with a good iPad

Wow those are some sorry looking screens. I guess I should be happy mine only bleeds a little in a two spots.

I mean I actually think I will just keep what I have for fear that I could get something even worse.

SAD APPLE, VERY VERY SAD!

That's part of it. Why bother exchanging now when no one who has exchanged has reported that they got a replacement that was perfect? And some have gotten replacements that were worse.

So if one's really bothered by it, then the best bet is to just return for a refund and not rebuy unless there are reports of the issue being totally resolved.

It's also that some units have very minor bleeding compared to what people are posting pictures of. On mine I can only notice it on a black screen in a totally dark room. If there's even a dim reading lamp on in the room I can't see it. And even in the dark room it's much smaller bleeding that in the pics above.

Sorry if that's settling for some, but I'll never use my iPad in totally dark rooms as I always have lights on and screens kill my eyes if I use them in the dark. So I'm not worried about a flaw that literally NEVER shows up in the conditions I personally use my iPad in. It doesn't affect me so I don't care that it's not "perfect."

If mine was as bad as pictured above and I could see it watching letter boxed video while in bed with the reading lamp on, then yeah, I'd be returning/exchanging for sure. But thankfully mine isn't noticeable at all in my usage conditions. And I feel bad for those who keep getting units that do have bleeding noticeable even with a light on etc.

I don't have an iPad yet but getting soon. My question how can you bring the iPad into black screen to see if there's light leakage? Sorry for this dumb question.

Just open the Photos app before loading any photos.

yeah its been said here to use the camera app and take a picture with your finger covering the camera and then view the image.

Ya, this is a very bad problem. I got my iPad 2 on launch and I have multicolor backlight bleeding:confused: and 2 dead pixels:mad:. I am somewhat upset, going to the apple store soon and going to try to get it replaced. It is not big enough problem for me to wait 4-5 weeks to get a new one.

Saw this thread today and ipadthai's post
I went to apple today. Asked if they 16gb in stock the guy said no but an appointment at GB.
GB guy checked my iPad and I was in luck and got a sealed replacement.

So far so good. Max out the brightness and no leakage.

So glad u got one working right!! And so glad to see u and other fellow mr members proactive about this real serious issue

I have a little bleeding in two corners but I have not noticed them since I turned it on for the first time. It's not a nuisance and isn't affecting the way things look so I'm not going to worry about it.

Hi all

Here's my update. My female friend was in Hawaii so grabbed a 32GB 3G WiFi +3g ipad and got me a 64GB 3G Wifi iPad. Her's had 3 dead pixels and screen bleed plus screen yellowing. She checked my 64GB version and some screen bleed but otherwise fine. Then she tried to charge it - it would not charge. So refund it is as these are harder to find than hens teeth.

Australian release is 25th march, should I take another chance?

My iPad has one minor spot where I think I could call that some light bleed. If I press on the bezel at that same spot, it gets worse. Likely there is some pressure being applied right there. I would think as the glue settles, the problem might go away on it's own. I can live with mine the way it is, though.

So if I have the light bleed, which I definitely do, Apple will not exchange it if I bought it at Best Buy huh? :/
