I'd keep the one on the left for sure. Much more minor bleeding and probably not very noticeable when not in the dark with the brightness up.

Of course, if you regularly use yours in the dark then it's more of an issue. I can't stand sitting around in the dark, much less looking at a bright screen in the dark, so I always at least have a lamp on. So the bleeding isn't much of an issue for me. Mine's even more minor than your replacement in the dark and I've yet to see the bleeding in normal usage for me.

The left one of course but sheesh, the fact that this is going out the door sucks.

Yup very poor quality control. Not sure how they think this is ok. Mine is in between the 2 posted above because my upper right is not as good as the replacement.

I guess I will keep mine till a later date and get it exchanged. so disappointed at how bad Apples QC is. the CS is overall excellent but all the products except for 2 ipod touch's have been defective.

overheating 2G iphone
iphone4 with yellow pics
21.5 iMac(bought in Dec) ..non functional usb ports
iPad2 with backlight bleeding

Very sad, the products are more expensive but quality is crap IMHO. I got an Asus netbook that was perfect and it was 1/2 the cost with 10 in LCD.

There are always issues like this it seems when Apple faces unexpected demand for a product launch. The factory workers are probably doing 18 hour shifts and rushing through things.

Hmm . . . I bet it's no fun putting these things together in a factory but it's still no excuse. As I've said before I waited to get gen 2 because I wanted to wait for bugs to be worked out and I guess that wasn't good enough. I've learned a lesson, though. iPad 3 comes out I will sit on the sidelines reading before I plunk down the cash.

Looks like I am running to the same issues.

What are my options if I bought it new off of eBay and don't have the receipt?

Contact AppleCare. They will take care of starting a case number for you or ordering a replacement. However, I'd recommend waiting on a replacement until this issue has been fixed. Definitely call to let them know the serial number of your affected unit. They probably won't ask where you purchased it. They didn't ask me about where I purchased mine when I called. Hope that helps.

Went today to exchange my second iPad, both the original and replacement had backlight bleed. I gave the replacement a one week period and it has not improved.

Anyways, this time they told me I didn't have to open it in the store (which is good, cause it's hard to see backlight bleeding in that bright store). That is what happened with my first replacement, I opened it in store and it looked great. But once I got home and in the normal lighting I could see it clear as day (and even worse with the lights off).

An Apple employee told me that his even has backlight bleeding and that it should get better in a week or two. Yet based on most reports and my experience, backlight bleeding does not get better.

Regardless, he said they want to make me happy, so even if the new replacement I got today has it then they will make sure I get one that doesn't. However he did say to give it a few weeks and see if it goes away.

I asked him if I waited a few months to see if it got better or wait for Apple to come up with a solution, could I still come back then and get a replacement without backlight bleed. He said of course and reiterated, we want you to be happy.

Assuming the problem get's fixed, I think Apple will help everyone who has backlight bleed. But I think what will end up happening (to save product supply), is they will take our iPads and send them out to be fixed and then send them back to us. Which is perfectly fine with me, I'd rather do that then keep taking new ones from the store, plus I would feel confident that would work.

I'm sure they are working on a fix as we speak, and once they do we'll all know how to go about getting it fixed.

I haven't opened my new replacement yet, but honestly at this point I expect it to have backlight bleed and plan to go back in a month or two when this issue is worked out.

This is a big disappointment for such a great product.

I still haven't an iPad 2 since I live in Germany, but I wanted to see if the display of my Macbook Air has also very little screen bleeding. I can say that it has very minimal bleeding on both sides, but this is visible only if I turn the brightness very high and turn off the lights..I know that screen bleeding cannot be completely avoided in LCD screens, and my Macbook Air has really a great screen.I will be glad if my new iPad has such a good screen also...

I'll try tonight to get some pics of my 6th iPad which I think may have minimal to no light bleeding. The "my ipad bleeds too, not a big deal" genius' aren't well informed. If that were the case to just "deal with it" then by all means, lower the starting price point of the ipad so I can "deal with it" at that price point. Don't leave until you are satisfied with what they give you.

I wouldn't want them to send my iPad out to get fixed as I'm sure that would take a month, so unless they give me an used one or something to use in the meantime -- I'd prefer a brand-spankin' new one.

I also don't know why people are exchanging iPad's now when clearly the new stock also suffers from the same problems.

Just wait a month or so. I mean, you have a YEAR without Applecare right? Unless it's horrendously bad I guess.

The new one I just opened is even worse. Your right, as you said I am just going to wait a few weeks or months, however long it takes until they fix the problem and then take mine in.

At this point, if they wanted to send my iPad away to be fixed and it would take a month, I don't care....as long as I get a normal screen the way it should be. I don't trust any new iPad 2s at the moment, not until they fix this issue.

Because as far as I am concerned ALL iPad 2 have some backlight bleed.

So, apple are hiding this under the rug? 2 weeks since release and no announcement has been made...

So, apple are hiding this under the rug? 2 weeks since release and no announcement has been made...

They're not going to announce it as it's something the vast majority of users won't notice as on many units it's only noticeable on a dark screen in a dark room and many will never use their iPad like that.

Buy announcing it you'll have what's happening on this forum on a larger scale--people testing the unit at high brightness on a black screen in a dark room and then being bothered by something they probably never would have noticed in normal usage.

Obviously, that excludes the people who get ones with really bad bleeding readily visible when watching videos at normal brightness and lighting.

Picked up a 32 ATT model today, and of course it has the bleed. It's not horrible and to be honest, my wife probably won't even notice. While it's pathetic Apple is allowing this kind of product to go out, I do take some solace in the fact they offer top notch customer service so when, if, this is fixed I know there won't be any problem getting a new one.

For now, I don't want to play the iPAD roulette game and potentially get a much worse one.

Mine has bleeding as well. I probably wouldn't have noticed it if not for this forum but it is there. I am the kind of person that could obsess about something like this and I have but seeing pictures of replacement iPads that we're worse has me keeping mine. It is noticeable when watching movies but not so much so and I have decided that I just need to enjoy using my first iPad.

I think mine has a light leak along the bottom. Just along the bottom. I have to do more testing to see. It could be wet glue though. So I figured I would wait a week or so. If it is true I will send it back once things calm down at the store.

How can you tell if it is a light leak or the glue?

I exchanged my 32gb white wifi today and the replacement was worse! The third looks great though, almost no light leak at all, but still some minor.

Initially, I did not think that my iPad had the light bleeding. However, after reading the posts and after closer examination, my unit has some minor light leakage, as well.

It is not as noticeable, as some of the posted pics that I have seen. I will probably wait for Apple to get their hands firmly around this issue and seek an exchange in the near future.

Same here, I have a 64gb wifi iPad2, and it has minimal bleeding, but some. It's actually way better than most of the pics I've seen so far. Its on the bottom part of the screen, on the right half, and somewhat minimal. Luckily when I watch movies and turn it to landscape, the movie covers up the area where is a little bit of bleed. I don't want to play "iPad roulette" though and gamble that I'll get a better one. I figure give it 2-3 months and see if after the initial rush has died down, they start quality checking them a bit better and maybe get a replacement unit then.

Those who claim that they do NOT have any backlight bleed problems, please post the first number (set of numbers if its 10, 11, 12 etc) that appears in your serial number. This number represents the week that the iPad was manufactured, with 1 representing the first week of manufacturing. We are now in week 13 of the manufacturing process.

I'd be interested to know if the issue has gotten better or not. I've had two iPads from week 8, they both had significant light bleed issues, one worse than the other.

*CRY*

Got this shipped to a US friend who sent it back to me. Got here tonight. And here's what I've got. :(

I'll wait it out a week, and if it's still the same, it's going back. Sigh. Are these yellow glue spots or backlight bleeds, in your opinion?

Interesting... I have only one number in my serial number, and it is a 1.

That's backlight bleeding out from behind the bezel. It's not going to go away. It's not going to get any better. It is, for all intents and purposes, what it is. Wait until this issue has been addressed before returning. Just contact AppleCare to get a ticket number and tell them you're waiting until they get this issue resolved.
