Is the yellow just spots or the entire screen? If there is a yellowish tinge to the entire screen then it isn't a QC issue it is just a different screen manufacturer. My replacement is considerably warmer than the first but there is very little bleed. There are many posts about the warmer versus cooler screen.

The yellowish tinge is to the entire screen. It is pretty annoying when iPad is used as a second screen via air display and everything looks totally different.

Also, as i said before, it is generally not as bright as my first iPad2. i would guess around 70% of the brightness it should have.

I've just spoken to the Apple support today and they will exchange my iPad2 again.

Will take up to 2 weeks to get the replacement. Hope this one turns out to be ok!

if that was mine, i would return it for a cash/credit full refund. then use that refund to buy a new ipad and get another 14 day full refund exchange period. this is what i did.

Hmmm...mine looks very similar to those pics. I have a noob question - will I be able to download all of my apps that I paid for for free or will I have to buy them again? The only one that was $ was Garage Band and I don't really use it...thanks !

previously i said i didn't see any light bleed. I was looking in the wrong spot. in my old iphone i had a light bleed from the seal of my iphone 3g so that's where I looked. I used air play this weekend at a friends BBQ and saw the light bleed. I had only one spot but damn, is it big.

My co-worker got his iPad 2 yesterday (ordered April 16th weekend). He brought it into work and compared it to mine side by side with 100% brightness, auto brightness off. He has almost zero backlight bleed. No patches or spots, just very, very slight leak from the edge which no one would notice and even if one noticed would have to be very OCD to complain about it. Mine looked horrible compared to his, you could see that my screen was defective.

Based on this, I'm guessing maybe they are starting to improve now? I'm going to pick up my replacement tonight at my local apple store. Last time I went in, the genius was a jerk about it and said that we could only do this exchange once for this issue because they all had it.

My iPad 1 has the standard blb along the edges. I never notice it since my brightness is always at the lowest setting (in fact, I originally did that to prevent/slow down blb) so I can live with that.

What does bother me is about 2 months ago two spots on the screen started showing bleeding on light-to-white colors. The spots are about where your thumbs would reach if you were holding the iPad in portrait with your hands at the center of either side, and they are slowly growing. It's a day one 3g model so I have until the end of April before my 1 yr AC expires.

Took my iPad to Apple today. I thought they may want to replace it with a refurb which would have been understandable (it is just shy of 1 yr old), but am glad they gave me a new one. Restoring from backup on it now, then I'll check out the screen.

Oddly I'm getting a "no sim" error. Hopefully restore will fix it, otherwise I will have to go back to Apple.

It's a launch iPad 3G 64GB from April 30, 2010, my 1yr AppleCare ends in 3 days, and they still gave me a new one :)

They didn't even test for bleeding. The store was packed and the lighting sucked for testing. The rep just went to the backroom, grabbed a new box, opened it, and gave me the new iPad (didn't need the cables or anything else since I still have the original box somewhere at home). All I brought to the store was my iPad in it's Apple case and a printout of the original receipt. Great experience.

New iPad has a cluster of ~8 dead pixels, going back tonight to exchange. At least I know restore from backup works nicely, it even keeps your home screen organization.

Apple has admitted repeatedly that the light-leak/bleeding is not normal and it something they will cover under warranty. This isn't an opinion. Many Apple managers have said it shouldn't have this light bleed. With that said, I think there are some people who think they have bleed that don't. I have seen a few screens here that I would be fine with that were assumed to have bleed.

100% opinion:
I think Apple is getting on top of the issue and may feel that there is a batch issue. With a batch issue there is obviously the high probability that exchanges with new will result in another iPad with bleed and so on and so on. However, in light of an unknown # of affected iPads in new-in-box units, what Apple CAN know is service units. Yes, they can ultimately get a handle on production units but for those having light-leak issues and returning them service units are a safer bet, for everyone IMO, for not having the bleed.

I think this is the reason some people are getting a bit of pushback from some reps as the mindset of the reps (OPINION) is that the customer is better serviced right now with a unit that Apple has a higher level of confidence is bleed-free.

This is just totally my opinion and perspective but this is why I am pretty sure I will be holding on to my current iPad 2 with light-leak for a few weeks and then scheduling a Genius appt. to have it replaced under warranty.

when will it be completely safe to buy the ipad 2? i had one but the screen was messed up and got my money back. Seems as if this is an occurring problem for a lot of people. Is is true Apple is getting a new LCD manufacturer?

I'd venture to say that with the amount of iPad 2's that have been sold, we are well beyond a few 'batches'.

Guys, iPad light bleed has been going on since the first version. If you can't deal with it, go buy another device. No matter how many times you exchange, you are going to have it to some degree. Just the nature of the beast....and the price point that you are paying. Someone made a good point a few days ago regarding price point and QC, and how that meshes together in terms of the threshold of panel variance, and what gets let through, and what doesn't.

Believe it or not, before the iPad 1, there were many that stated Apple couldn't hit a sub $500 price point with a device like the iPad due to cost. They did it, and the components that you actually do get for the price are outstanding, due to the way Apple strategically corners the market on component supply.

So again, if the only thing wrong is slight light bleed from one or two areas that can only be seen at 100% brightness and in a pitch black room, move on and enjoy your device.

+1

I can only see mine under those conditions. It's really not that big of a deal. If it bugs you, exchange it or return it. Otherwise, enjoy it!

I actually agree with you here. However, you are off on the iPad 1 having this [real] issue. I am on my 3rd iPad 2 and had 1 iPad 1. ALL 3 of the 2s had significant light-bleed. The iPad 1 had light coming from the edges but nothing significant and NOT what is being discussed here. Some consistent lighting that shows up at 100%, hell.. even 50% that is not huge and splotchy all around the edges is NOT what everyone is ticked about. I don't know how many times you can read it and not get it that Apple has said, without making a huge formal announcement (sending tons of people into their stores) that the light-leak that is being discussed here is NOT NORMAL.

If I had just a bit of "slight light bleed from one or two areas that can only be seen at 100% brightness and in a pitch black room" I would have never been a part of this thread and I would bet there are many like me.

Agree here as well... wouldn't be here if this was only seen at 100%, however I can see "bleed" at 0% brightness level. Therefore I am disappointed and feel its unacceptable at this price point of 729 dollars plus tax!

Once again we have to all restate the issue for users not understanding why we are here. I dont jack my ipad up to 100%, not looking to go blind.

Yeah I am holding on to my 3 more weeks then going in by that time, things should be looking better if not Ill return it in another month after. Light bleed only affects me at night for like 20 mins if I play one game no matter how bad it is. No sense going to the store every other day.

No, I picked it up from Walmart this morning.
