Received my replacement just now. If you had this iPad, would you be keeping it?

It seems better than my original one (posted here), but there's still a blotch towards the top right corner.

I think I'll be keeping it because of the hassle of sending it back, waiting for a week and then the possibility of getting another one with backlight bleeding.

If that's @50 percent, IMO I think that's terrible and would return or exchange.

A few weeks back, I posted my fourth iPad, which was brand new at the time and the worst I had up to that point. I was then told by Apple Care to wait until they knew the bleed was fixed. I received a call from my rep last Friday saying he had located one. He was on the phone with a local Apple store and they were verifying over the phone with me that they had an iPad in a dark room at that moment and that it has no bleed. I was finally able to go and pick it up yesterday, and I am happy to say they are right. It is nearly perfect. There is one very small spot on the long left side, but it is barely noticable. Even at 100% brightness this thing looks great. I have attached a few pics of my old one that was horrible and the new one, in case there are any doubters out there. FINALLY! I hope you all are able to get the same results here.

Fantastic! I can only hope to score one that nice.

Yeah, I think Apple is hoping people like you and me will just "deal" with it...mine looks very similar to yours and I only notice it when watching a movie on it late at night so I'm not sure it's worth it either.

That's not the only problem actually. The glass is separating from the aluminium again -- just like my previous iPad (posted elsewhere) at the bottom right. This time the separation isn't as bad but I'm really afraid the gap will grow. Not only would it look bad, but rather moisture or liquid could enter the interior more easily.

And last time they promised some sort of "compensation" before I returned the first iPad, but this time they responded they can't do that. Disappointed about the claim and the frustration to wait for another week for something I have paid $730 more than a month ago. :/

that's prettyyyy nice!!!

I've had my 64GB Wifi iPad 2 replaced twice now due to backlight problems. The first had a glow filling a quarter of the screen (and damage to the casing), the second has a light spot on the screen (not the edge).

Both times the genius saw the problem straight-away and offered a repalcement. Both times they didn't have any stock so I had to wait a few days. I was also given £25 credit as compensation.

that looked exactly like the one i had, only the ipad was a black version.

i would return that. i returned mine and still waiting for my new one:
ordered april 12th,
Ships: May 3
Delivers: May 6

i don't mind the almost 1 month wait. i rather have a perfect one.

Walked in to the apple store 14 minutes later walked put with a new brown box unit without the bleed.
The genius said it was one of the worst he had seen

not to rain on your parade...

i'm beginning to believe that the brown box units are basically return units that had the light bleed... they were prob returned to manufacturing or apple repair and then fixed and sent back to the apple stores...

what do you guys think?

If my iPad 2 with light-bleed is replaced with a fully-functional iPad 2 with no light-bleed, no dust under the screen and a screen that isn't coming up I will be satisfied. I personally don't care new-in-box vs brown box. I think it is Apple policy to replace all external parts on service replacements. Obviously if I am offered an iPad 2 where you can see the back has scratches or signs of use I would reject it before we even got to turning the screen on.

The Apple store rep. Told me that it is brand new from manufacturer (same as when you buy a sealed iPad). The sleeve was also intact as well. I don't think they were faulty items, they are brand new just in the brown box instead of the new sealed one, but brown boxes obviously can't be sold onto customers even if they have no new sealed iPads in stock, they are for replacement purposes only.

that makes sense too. basically brand new straight from the manufacturer. sole purposes is for in store replacement units. (no need for retail box, cable, charger and manual)

No rain here. I thought the same thing.
Really what else would they do with the returned units?
One interesting thing I saw was a $369 charge, then he hit next and the line item changed to $0.00

Exactly, you go in to replace the iPad not the chargers, manuals etc. So why would you want to get a brand new sealed box if you just want to replace the iPad? Apple will also gain profit on this term. It's absolutely the same as a sealed box but just in a brown one, I think people find this difficult to understand.

I resisted the brown box idea but I think you're right. I only want an acceptable good working unit. I swear the bleed is getting worse in on of the corners. I don't know.

I talked to my local Apple store and next week he said he should have a replacement for me since stock seems to be showing up more and more. I'll let you guys know if I get a keeper.

Just my opinion but I think Apple has a lot more immediate control over the quality of the brown-box units. They have been physically inspected, external parts have been replaced. As stated to me "the only parts that might be retained are internals". I don't know if the battery is replaced (I would think it would be) but in the case of the iPad 2 I am not even really concerned with a battery from an iPad 2 that someone returned in under 14 days.

What is also nice is you can schedule a delivery of a service unit and just go to a store when it comes in and it's much easier (and Apple reps are more willing) to inspect it right there on the spot, externally and the screen.

Some local Apple Managers have been very candid with me off the record and I am personally very comfortable with going the brown-box route and think they have done a great job of managing this issue. Think about it, they aren't having fun and it's very likely any Apple employee with an iPad 2 is having the same issue.

No complaints about service minus one slightly less than happy manager dealing with my issue. Otherwise they have been great. I was told today that Apple will call me in the coming days when they have a replacement for me. I'll take a pic of my iPad 2 when I get home to show that it looks like it's getting worse.

that's super nice!

Ok so here is what my iPad 2 looks like now. Not good.

And before you ask yes it is at 100% to show it easily. I have to keep my brightness at 25% for most of it to go away. My comfort level on brightness is 60%. At 60% it shows.
