.NET
XNA
Photosynth
Office 2007 UI
Intellisense
ClearType
OneNote
Surface
XBOX Live

just to name a few.

.NET - modeled after Java
XNA - not sure what you think is innovative about this.
Photosynth - Not familiar with this one.
Office 2007 UI - aka: the Ribbon. Definitely new. Arguably bad.
Intellisense - Hardly the first. Had the same thing with Borland IDEs years before VS picked it up.
Clear Type - Developed outside MS, technique was picked up by MS.
Surface - Concept still under refinement at MS. Technology not developed at MS.
XBox Live - No idea what you think is innovative about it.

Most people don't know or care what most of these things are. That's a fact.

The Office 2007 UI was probably the most loathed software UI change (among actual users) I can recall. InfoWorld said it was "met with rejection, dejection, and outright mutiny." And it was. Innovative? I guess if enraging your users is innovative, yeah.

Surface? Please. The only place I've actually seen one of these things was at the Microsoft booth at Disneyland. I guess they have them at Microsoft stores too. A real world-changer, that.

XBOX Live did little that wasn't being done in PC gaming already. They just brought it to the console. They were the first to do so, so it was innovative in that regard. Their Coverflow ripoff and new Mii-like avatars does the "innovation" argument little favor.

If you think Microsoft is innovative, good for you. Celebrate it.

We need a M$ tablet out there to keep Apple on it's toes. The world needs folks on the street with clunky tablets, having to look for power outlets because their battery life is weak. Just to see the look on their faces when apps are crashing because they dont work quite right on Brand X hardware.

Its gonna be good....someday. Maybe soon. Possibly.

Actually, these exact devices have been on the market for years.

(But no one buys them.)

Eh... um... I'm not sure what is this but a relative of mine works at Microsoft. Yesterday he sent me this trough Skype.

"Tabi" vs "iPad" as names, and as joke fodder - discuss amongst yourselves
(I know, if you want to get technical it's "Tabi " vs "iOS." Just play along :) )

"Touch Screen friendly" - not optimized for touch, then. But is it optimized for any other input method?

As to the emphasis on cloud computing - I don't like it, you may think differently. If all the hacks of the social networking sites haven't been warning enough, now they want businesses to go to the cloud? Granted I don't know a lot about how they define "the cloud," but I don't have warm fuzzies about it right now.

Maybe if I got a Tabi......

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the new slate computers, whether they are Windows 7 or Android or whoever, will not sidestep on these features:

1. Camera
2. FLASH Supportive

Innovative? Probably not. Smart? Yes!

Funny I don't recall see an HP slate that I can actually buy!!

The very cool looking MacBook/Pro keyboards were developed by Sony first. And when Sony started putting similar looking ones on their machine, lots of people thought they were copying. Not the case.

I love how free is a bullet point. As if they'd charge the user to download and/or install the initial OS on the device. "Oh hey, its really customizable, you have to pay us for Tabi and install it yourself." Ridiculous.

The new kernel bit I find interesting. I wonder the reasoning for this? Is it because they're massively slimming down Win7? Why not run WinPhone7 then? Idk, it just doesn't make sense to make a new kernel and OS for a tablet that's running standard atom procs that are already supported by windows devices which will provide more than adequate processing power for WinPhone7.

They seem misguided in their efforts. This undoubtedly will create larger delays for them.

How about:

Runs all original Xbox games.

Instant hit then :)

Halo 1 on a tablet :)

Wonder how much tablet power you would need to play Xbox1 games?

Your reply, like many others prior to yours, implies that Apple has developed the Ipad from Jan 2010 until April 2010 when it was released... You serious? You thought about your reply when writing? You should go bAck to school and take the option "product development and launching" if it exists.... You'll learn something instead of posting c$@p!
What are you talking about? The point is that the picture is from before anyone knew what the ipad would look like. In other words, how could HP copy the ipad when they didn't know how it looked like. How am I implying that the ipad was developed from Jan to April 2010? My comment seemed to have affected you, and really angered you.

It seems like I've seen something like that before...

ah...there it is...

You cannot deny now that Microsoft is indeed copying the concept. I mean look at the iPad compared to this!

The HP Slate was actually announced before the iPad. The iPad was announced on the 27th and there were press videos about the HP Slate on the 25th (and perhaps before) with an actual live working model. As you can see the screen dimensions have changed, but the design is pretty much the same. And while not implying that the iPad was a rip off of the Slate, let us not forget that Apple rips off other companies just like everyone else.

Just so you know.

Yes that is awful. Reminds me of that company that charged MP3 player users for updates - oh wait, that's Apple! :D

Actually, Chiclet-style computer keyboards were around long before Sony started making computers.

I understand the driver download to get Bing 7 to work will take up 7GB. After 12 restarts, you will be able to read your search results with an animated font.

Well better get used to it because apple's relationship with google isn't so hot right now.

I agree

I love my iPad but I'd love it even more if it had those two features. I don't care about Flash so much..although it is a bummer not being able to visit sites like Hulu and stuff. If Apple could get the media companies to allow a iTunes subscription it may negate my desire for Flash. A dual camera system like the one in the iPhone4 would definitely be nice...especially for Skyping. Oh and by the way...where the heck is the multi-tasking update for iPad...come'on people let's get moving! :)

What a Tard!

"not just to deliver products, but to deliver products that people want to buy."

This man is a genius...

He is a freakin' tard! His statement translated: "We want to make something that people will want to buy so we're going to copy Apple as hard as we can because we're tards with no imagination".

I remember when the iPad came out Bill Gates gave an interview saying that he wasn't that impressed...however now M$ #1 guy is saying that an iPad clone is priority #1...hmmmm interesting.

I think future generations of ipad will add a camera and other features. I decided to hold off on getting one for now but I'd say early adopters of ipad will still have a good product when later models come out. I mean imagine purchasing a new ipad two years from now. The first one purchased will still be a quality digital picture frame and book reader even if the new one gets carried out of the house more.

And yet they didn't bring a product to market which is the point. MS is not innovative.

MS is basically not a hardware company, except for some narrow segments (game consoles, keyboards, mice).

The MS business model is built on cooperating with hardware vendors to provide software that makes the hardware useful. (I know that for Apple followers the idea of "cooperating" is a difficult concept to grasp.)

Apple borrows a lot from Microsoft, Microsoft borrows a lot from Apple. To say that "MS is not innovative" is blind. What do you think that the Iphone would be like if you removed all features that depend on Microsoft touch-screen phone patents?

Sometimes, Microsoft is in the lead (how many times here have people said that the "Finder" is stone-age compared to "Explorer"?).

But anyway, Microsoft would not release a tablet product - hardware isn't where they want to be.
