Unless Apple gets into the business space for tablet applications (hospitals are a great example), the iPad is going to be limited to consumer apps and consumer market...which may be fine to Apple.

-Eric

Apple doesn't have to get into the business space to get their tablets into these applications. There are enough 3rd party integrators smart enough to see the opportunity and put together solutions involving the iPad. You will see the iPad popping up in all sorts of places....

I know I'm pissing in to the void with this comment, being buried on page 7 or 8 as it will be, but to all the people saying that this is a blatant rip-off of the iPad --- go check the timeline of events in January. This device was demoed before iPad was announced. Just saying.

And you didn't get the impression during Ballmers "Demo", that this was a rushed event, just to appear (not to say 'pretend') to be ahead in the game? After all, Apple's Tablet device was rumored/mentioned on every TechBlog, including probable screen sizes, etc. And probably by studying Apple's Design concepts of the previous years, you could get a pretty good idea, how an Apple Tablet could look like. I am very sure, Ms did their homework, too

That MS Tablet was nowhere to be ready anytime soon. If the MS Tablet had been near production stage (including a satisfactory Battery life, etc) Ballmer would have given a very different presentation, especially with the hindsight that his arch rival Apple will roll out a Tablet, too.

No, that event ("Demo" - LOL) was nothing more to calm down the shareholders. :p

Nothing says cool like a late middle-aged, balding guy with a gut and wearing a cheap pullover sweater. Way to inspire confidence Steve that you MS is cutting edge company interested in what people want! Seriously, just wear a suit and come out as the uninspired fungible corporate tactician that you are.

I keep hearing this but I don't understand it. 40%+ failure rate for the 360 the first couple of years (?) and the whole Xbox project is still billions in the hole as I understand it. It won't be long before they'll have to deliver a new generation console and the losses will start all over again.

I don't know of a definition of the word "success" in a business sense that really fits the reality of the Xbox.

I don't know whether it's in the black but the Xbox is making profit (and has been for the last couple of years).

No matter what... Microsoft has some real challenges ahead as the market changes from Computers to consumer devices and the computer is just becoming part of the package. This is so different from where we've been over the last 30 years and they seem so slow to change the mindset. Apple on the other hand seems to have seen the writing on the wall years ago and is miles ahead in consumer products.

With that said... MS is not going to go away... they just have to change and playing the "me too" and "catch-up" game is not going to do it for them. Look at Google... within 3 years they've gone from nothing in the Phone space to putting many to shame and putting the pressure on Apple.

BTW... speaking of Google... but not to get off subject. Played with A Droid X last night. Not bad, but hated the feel of the hardware. Too big in my opinion and just didn't feel right.

Mistake. Apple's use of a power-sipping mobile OS is what made the iPad what it is. There is no way a general-purpose PC operating system, especially one as bloated as Wince7, can provide that sort of generous longevity. Battery life was the iPad's killer app!

Agreed but google Windows 7 Embeded, that's what MS plans to use on their tablets. It looks nice but I'm more interested in a webOS tablet than anything else. Though I'm loving my new iPad.

I would've sworn he was holding an iPad when I first saw this picture. I guess hp is copying that design as well along with copying the MBP design...

MS doesn't know how to create a tablet. They seem to think that if you put windows 7 on a tablet like device. That is all you need. They need to create a seperate OS because otherwise the Tablet will have terrible battery life.

I really think microsoft needs to design the tablet in house as well instead of letting their typical vendors design it.

Ballmer said, "they've sold certainly more than I'd like them to have sold."

Will Ballmer be such a salesman forever? If he has ever paid certain attention to how MS can satisfy costumers, he would have sold as well as he expected.

Seriously, why doesn't Ballmer look at iPad with the eyes of a SOFTWARE development company and come up with some innovative (resist jokes about that choice of adjective, please) Microsoft products for it. Where is Office on iPad? Where are the MS Games? XBox connectivity?

There's money to be made by them here, but egos seem seem to be clouding judgement. Take the money wasted to develop Kin and throw that in to iPad/iPhone development and MS could be a dominant developer for the top mobile OS.

Because it's Microsoft.

They'll always be followers - they need new management and some more innovative engineers.

Notice that the picture is from early January, before the ipad was introduced.

Your reply, like many others prior to yours, implies that Apple has developed the Ipad from Jan 2010 until April 2010 when it was released... You serious? You thought about your reply when writing? You should go bAck to school and take the option "product development and launching" if it exists.... You'll learn something instead of posting c$@p!

You know who would buy this? They are tech niches who have to demo to show some folk. :D Other than, no one else. :)

Meh. I'd only consider an Android-based tablet over an iPad.

Same. At this point to diversify, I should have skipped out on the iPad for an upgrade for my 3G and snagged a 7" Android tablet when one comes out. I love my iPad though and when there is an iPhone that will run the iPad software I've bought too, I'll probably switch to an Android tablet.

Holy crap I know of no other operating system that resorce hungry. Makes you wonder how Windows 1.0 fit on a floppy and room to spare.

Oh really? Here are Snow Leopard requirements.

Any Mac computer with an Intel processor is certainly FAR above 1GHZ.
