This whole ban thing got me to do some research.

$349 for an unlocked Galaxy Nexus
$30 plan for 100 minutes, unlimited text and 5GB of data at 4GB speed with T-Mobile Prepaid.

Total cost after 2 years:

$349 for phone
$30 x 24 months
$1069 cost for 2 years (or $44.5 per month).

I am very tempted to switch though 100 minutes is on the "low" side. But 5GB of data is very attractive.

Looks like we have yet more legal defeat for Apple.
http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-tablets-no-ipad-copycats-decides-uk-court-09237645/

Various legal battles rage across the world for tech companies, but it looks like*Apple*isn’t having much luck in the UK. Last week, HTC was found not to infringe on Apple’s patents, with three being found invalid. Now*Samsung*has been given the all-clear by the High Court of England and Wales. The court found that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 8.9 all have recognizable differences between Apple’s iPad, and as a result will remain on sale in the UK.

It's amazing to see how different cases are going throughout the world.

This is good news for everyone.

Samsung is giving consumers options and will force Apple to compete in the market rather than the courts.

Well I will openly admit I'm pleased as a UK resident that my choices as a consumer will not be stifled by legalities.

The last thing I want is even less choice.

I don't fault tablet makers for following in Apple's footsteps and ditching the tablet form factor from the days of ol'. However, if I came up with an original (please don't send me pictures of images from 2001. I'm referring to real world products) device that became extremely popular, and then saw another company mimicking practically everything I did right down to the actors from my commercials, I'd be seriously PO'ed someone was trying to make a dollar off my back.

As for "simple design," I find that seems to be something with which most companies have great difficulty. One of the things people for which Jobs was praised was his ability to say "no."

I'll be bold and guess you are referring to Apple's visit to XEROX' PARC. In that event, it is my understanding that XEROX received APPL stock in exchange for access to the Smalltalk development system and any "inspiration." Did Samsung visit Cupertino recently?

Yes, Bill Gates has been trying to sell tablet PCs for years. However, it took Apple to come up with a new approach that resonated with the public to the point of disrupting the PC industry.

I won't say Apple doesn't have some blood on its hands in its history (ex. Watson), but didn't the Zune have WiFi sync back in 2007? Also, it was a forgone conclusion at the time that the application was rejected that WiFi syncing was headed to iOS soon. That almost like Apple releasing the iOS without an address book and then being barred from ever doing their own after devs put out address books in the app store. Now if Apple's address book looks almost exactly like or ridiculously similar to another dev's address book, I would gladly ding Apple.

On a side note (and not to start another conversation), I find it interesting the differences between Apple and Microsoft dealing with Android. Apple seems unwilling to compromise on what it believes it pilfering of its work while Microsoft seems very satisfied with licensing agreements.

As for the current score board in the great Patent Wars, any attorney worth his or her salt will tell you the law is from from perfect, including Judge Posner.

I just don't believe Samsung has innovation in its DNA when it comes to consumer products and is mimicking Apple beyond the point of good taste. I tell you what, though, if Apple's TV is a ripoff of the craptastic Samsungs I mistakenly bought in 2010 (2 out of 3 went belly up at the 13 month mark - thank goodness for extended warranties!), I will gladly concede.

Thank you for that breakdown! Fascinating. However, I prefer hard science. ;)

Well said. Samsung has no shame and it boggles my mind how folks can deny, with a straight face, the fact that Samsung is outright copying Apple. Kinda reminds me of the Adobe CEO downplaying the fact that Flash sucks on Android.

Hi... you know that retina technology.... yeah... guess who made it.. .. Samsung! Food for thought.

It's clear that Samsung decided to go with the same frontal style that Apple made popular.

However some courts are ruling that, because Apple didn't invent that frontal style, it's not copying for anyone else to choose a similar front while having different sides and backs.

kdarling - and just to clarify - you are also saying - in a way - that Apple didn't "invent" or was first with the design of the frontal style - but by using similar previous designs - made it a popular one.

Correct?

i've looked at candy bar phones either right before the iphone came out or a few months after it shipped. since you can't design and ship a phone in 3 months, they had to have been designed before the iphone was announced.

you can argue about the algorithms that apple designed for touch being patented, but design wise the iphone wasn't unique. same with tablets, the iPad was the first ARM tablet with good software support. there were tablets long before the ipad, they just weren't useful

Correct. Apple was not the first to come up with the frontal design; they made it popular.

Likewise, Apple did not invent white box with a product image, the inside packaging style they used, the green phone icon they used, or many other things. They simply made them popular (again). It speaks highly of how much influence Apple has.

It's similar to how various car makers tried out tailfins over the years, but it wasn't until a big name like Cadillac used them, that fins become popular and used on almost every car model.

For example, Samsung sold this touch phone in summer 2006:

A Netherlands court cited this 2005 Pidion Windows CE touch phone as prior art when denying Apple's injunction request against Samsung last January. It was available in black or white:
