That's why the subnotebook or netbook category has PC makers so very frightened. There's not a lot of profit to be had at that level. If you start doing high-end things that define the Apple brand, forget it - there's no way you can get prices down that low without sacrificing something important to Apple.
Maybe sacrificing hardware performance needed to run Mac OS X, iLife, and iWork effectively? :)

Can someone tell me why Apple are releasing iPods in the back to school season and notebooks at christmas?

Who gets an iPod for their studies?

Who can afford a two thousand dollar laptop as an xmas gift?

What the hell this is COMPLETELY STUPID.

My thoughts too. I think this has been a huge mistep for apple and as a fan of the co. I really hope it doesn't cost them dearly. But as I am sure they have people here reading opinions and gauging reactions I hope it's not too late for them. They have fallen way behing in their competitiveness of their strongest product so far, the notebooks, and no one gives a f. f. about the ipods anymore.ATTENTION. I am not saying people are not interested in buying, most people are and they are so as strong as ever, but ipods don't generate that extra attention anymore for big events such as this one.

So my reaction to as I see this clown on the green background with the ipod, is (first off it's downright ugly and uninspired something more akin to m$ than apple) so what? Where are the new f. macs? Is a sligtly larger ipod screen or memory anything to write home about in this day and age? Give us a break apple and get your ... moving for these new macs...

Posts of the Day, Mind you one of them is mine, what modesty!!!

They don't update laptops during summer because people will always need laptops during back to school season.
They update them in winter to bolster sales.
iPods get updated in Sept. so that they are available to purchase during the 4 months before xmas.

Yeah but this can backfire seriously as apple is outpriced and ouperformed in nearly every category right now, and even outstyled in some machines, from the 10 plus people I was trying to get to switch, 1 got apple, 1 is still waiting for updates, and 8 just couldnt be bothered for apple to reach to the level of the rest of the market place. Great strategy apple. REMEMBER APPLE THERE'S UPHILL AND DOWNHILL AND THERE'S NOT ONE SIZE FITS ALL STRATEGY, THE FACT THAT VISTA SUCKS AND THAT PEOPLE HAVE STARTED SWINGING YOUR WAY DOESN'T MEAN THAT THIS IS WHAT'S ALWAYS GOING TO HAPPEN, SO AS LONG AS YOU ARE APPLE TELEPHONY AND APPLE HIFI AND NOT APPLE COMPUTER ANYMORE IT'S GONE COME BACK TO HAUNT YOU...:apple:

I have to agree with you... The day Apple dropped "Computer" from their name, I got all excited and thought it was cool how the company was diversifying. Now I'm just sick of hearing about the stupid iPhone all the time while waiting six months for my new MacBook Pro. I kind of pride myself on having used Macs before Apple was cool. ( ;) ) So from my point of view, it seems like Apple is really angering some of their long-time loyal customers... I've actually started rolling my eyes whenever I see someone with an iPhone 3G. :(

PLEASE DON'T SHOUT! It is a great strategy: it's one that Apple has employed for many, many years and it has been working for them. Could something else work better? Sure. Is it worth the risk of interrupting a working solution to roll the dice on something new? Apple thinks not.

MacBook Prices

In an earlier post I commented on the current availability of really excellent Vista notebooks from Sony, HP, Toshiba and others under the $1,000 price barrier. I know, because I own a HP Vista notebook I bought for $600 at Staples.

I have noted on the Internet that there is a growing group of people who (apparently) are buying cheap Windows notebooks and downloading a hacked version of OSX called iATKOS to install on this cheaper hardware. This is an interesting experiment that results in a crippled version of OSX, but I wonder if the cost of Apple notebooks is driving this. Yes, I know this is illegal and immoral, but if you read the forums of this group the numbers of hackers attempting this is alarming. If you look at the torrent sites at the number of downloads it is surprising.

I really hope that Apple can release a set of lower priced, higher capability notebooks this year.

want of OSX =/= want of apple products, some people just want the operating system, others want the whole setup.

a person who really wants an apple product will buy it or save up to buy it, and thats wat gives the "bad" reputation of apple as a fanboy driven company. In other words, apparantly its bad for people to like what they like.

yea, it confuses me too

A simpletons view of apple computers is standard laptop hardware (excluding the mac pro workstation) wrapped in a swanky looking package with osx installed.
Maybe these people are voting with their wallets to get the computing experience they want, or maybe they just want to try it out before deciding to switch - similar to what millions of people do with music and movies on the p2p network - try before you buy.
The 'apple fanboy' reputation is nothing to do with what you suggested. Assuming you know a little about pc hardware, take a deep breathe and have a little read through this forum.

I think i have a pretty good guess on what is going to happen.
People are talking about the nano and the touch... how about the iPod (Nano) Touch? ;)
:apple: :apple: :apple: :apple:

So you're saying Apple doesn't update its laptops before back-to-school because they know people will buy their laptops anyway? That sounds like so cheap tactic I can't believe Apple would do it.

I know you're not replying to me - but this makes sense. When Apple releases a new product there usually isn't enough stock for a month or 2. That's no good for a back to school promotion, students would not get any special deal and some might start school without a computer... so Apple's sales would drop.

Apple knows enough about its own stock levels to offer a bundle of products that it'll be replacing soon enough and is currently overstocked in. Students get a deal and Apple gets rid of stock.

OK, so here it is. They are going to add a new, "More Cow Bell" wheel! That's right. It will automagically add a dozen different Cow Bell effects to anything, no, you heard right, anything, that you are currently listening to. This includes music and podcasts, and get this, on iPhones, to your actual phone calls!

Oh my god they must have been reading our secret wishes and taking our feedback!
:) hehe

What is with the assumption of everyone here that no one else knows anything about computers??? i really dont get it, this is basically a tech site, and the vast majority of us (myself included) are nerds. Fact is, many different things contribute to the fanboy image, one of which i stated, loyal customers.

anyway, i cant wait for tomorroww!

you know what i would really really like?
some new god damn headphones. dont get me wrong, i like the current ones, but they tear apart so friggin easily. i've had an ipod shuffle and my current ipod touch; the headphones are still working but the rubber part of them just fell off. and i really hate that, it feels uncomfortable and looks ugly.
so please, if its an ipod-related event, come up with some new long-lasting headphones!

I agree-include a set of Apple's own in-ear headphones:improved of course.

Sony puts in a EX85 with their players-so why can't Apple include a IEM at least with the touch?

wow, so much negativity here.

I, for one, am pretty friggin' pumped for the event tomorrow. I'd like to replace my 2g nano, and at the very least prices will drop on refurbished current-gen iPods.

17 hours woohoo!

My sentiments exactly. If they are not seriously misguided they know they are treading a very fine line from being what they used to becoming something the average joe gets too accustomed and too bored with and to whom their loyal tec customers turn their backs on frustrated by the choices that have been made. I hope this doesn't happen, but no one is infallible, including Steve.

LOL at all the delusional people in this thread who think Flash will replace HD.
Let's talk tomorrow k?

I think that in terms of "wow factor", it's much more difficult to keynote some amazing new computer, unless it's ultra mobile, or offering something that requires all the smarts of a computer but doesn't fit our preconceptions of what a computer is.

ie: to a large extent a newer computer isn't going to surprise us, so while the updates are important they're not as amazing.

So we see speed bumps in machines, slight case changes, a few new features. A new OS or iLife gets much more attention but these are every 18 months (well, unless iLife 09 is announced Tuesday) - and even these are merging with the non-stereotypical use of a computer.

Apple isn't ignoring the traditional computer, it's looking at what people do and need, and redefining how its done in any field.

ps. I'd love to see some upgrades to laptops too.

with all the hype and how much they want press coverage, why not even a banner on the home site?

Why not buy some decent ones independently of the player?

That way you'll a) get better sound, and b) you won't have to choose a player for the in-box headphones.

well. i would buy some separate headphones, but the market is so big, that i dont even know what to choose. i have to replace the current ones pretty soon and i have to figure out if i'm gonna buy the ipod in-ear headphones, or wait a little longer and get some Shure headphones :)
but seriously though... apple should 'upgrade' the current version of the headphones.

I don't think anyone has claimed that alliPods will be flash-based as of tomorrow. We've said that eventually flash will replace hard drives--and not just in music players.

Dr Dre! I tried the mega expensive Shure and Bose ones which were OK but not worth the money. I plugged the Dr Dre ones into my iPhone and was completely amazed. They're SO expensive but if you CAN afford it, and appreciate sound/build quality they should be worth it. Looking pretty cool (unlike the flimsy Bose + Shure ones!) is a bonus...

Well, first you need to choose what kind, then you choose how much you're willing to spend on them, then you read reviews with a critical mind, then you go check some out to check if they fit you, then you test them for audio quality, and then you buy. The latter two might be swapped if necessary if you're talking in-ears because of "health reasons" (and plain yuckiness).

It's not that hard. It's about making informed choices. Even if the in-ear apples are cheap headphones, you can get much better quality if you buy something else.
