My thoughts were that iPods were disposable electronics designed to fail within 2 years.

They certainly behave like that.

My 1G and 3G classics died within 2 years of horrrible disk death. Never again. I will only purchase the SSD versions. My 2 year old nano is still going strong, but I want the apps of the Touch this year.

Let's Rock..........

AC/DC finally signed up??? its only them and the Beatles not signed up now isn't it? Even Metallica have given in

Can someone tell me why Apple are releasing iPods in the back to school season and notebooks at christmas?

Who gets an iPod for their studies?

Who can afford a two thousand dollar laptop as an xmas gift?

What the hell this is COMPLETELY RETARDED.

That is a REALLY good point, actually.

They don't update laptops during summer because people will always need laptops during back to school season.
They update them in winter to bolster sales.
iPods get updated in Sept. so that they are available to purchase during the 4 months before xmas.

So you're saying Apple doesn't update its laptops before back-to-school because they know people will buy their laptops anyway? That sounds like so cheap tactic I can't believe Apple would do it.

yah they do it

Apple acually does do this though. They do it AFTER the school rush though, so they can push through the remaining hardware, and they always have the ipod deal so that they can get the old models OUT and then get the new moodels IN.

that's business! Apple needs to boost sales and make money like everyone else. Don't hate them for it, they gave you a free iPod Touch :p

It's not a cheap tactic, it's business. It's the same reason there are no discounts yet on the Nintendo Wii—what's the incentive to lower the price when they're so popular stores can't keep 'em on the shelves?

Aah, the anticipation is building. I don't want to set my hopes high, but I'd love to see GPS on the touch.

However, I'll still be happy with just a price drop, because the touch is great as it is. External volume controls are a plus.

While I agree with you all – I would LOVE to see a $600 Mac notebook - I can see why Apple steers clear. A cheap Mac notebook would seriously cut into the sales of their MacBook line and even though they would probably sell more of them the profit margin would be much smaller. It would also change the perception of the brand.

That's why the subnotebook or netbook category has PC makers so very frightened. There's not a lot of profit to be had at that level. If you start doing high-end things that define the Apple brand, forget it - there's no way you can get prices down that low without sacrificing something important to Apple.

Myself, I desperately want a subnotebook for blogging and on-the-go work that's too intensive for my iPhone but doesn't warrant schlepping around my Power Book. (The Air's form factor is just too big.) *Sigh* looks like I'll be picking up that new Lenovo after all...

You mean sacrificing the huge profits on the so-so hardware?

Oh, I know, you're talking of firewire 800! :p

I want an OQO, but with no keyboard. I want to use a PPC keyboard when needed.

My next laptop will be a lenovo, though :)

headphones

you know what i would really really like?
some new god damn headphones. dont get me wrong, i like the current ones, but they tear apart so friggin easily. i've had an ipod shuffle and my current ipod touch; the headphones are still working but the rubber part of them just fell off. and i really hate that, it feels uncomfortable and looks ugly.
so please, if its an ipod-related event, come up with some new long-lasting headphones!

Why not buy some decent ones independently of the player?

That way you'll a) get better sound, and b) you won't have to choose a player for the in-box headphones.
