Why not just touch the screen directly to where you want the cursor to go to?

its more accurate to move just the cursor, plus going back and fourth between text and the keyboard becomes an annoyances. Its a little bit like saying why use command+Q to quit an app instead of moving the mouse to file->Quit App.

It happens when people comment on technology they never experienced.

I have no problems whatsoever accurately positioning the cursor by touching the screen. Why invoke two actions when one is enough? And quicker.

Whether or not apple removes 3dt is out of my control, but the 3dt method of positioning the cursor is faster and more accurate for me.
With Android long press, the misspelt word is immediately selected with one key press and the correction can be made by simply typing in the correct spelling. And no accuracy is required when long pressing on the pertinent word.

Not talking about a misspelling which iOS does, I’m referring to editing text to add or modify what has been typed.

Well correcting a misspell is just one example of "modify" so long press select still applies, and adding text is simply a case of touching the screen where I want to add additional text. In fact, I've done it twice writing this so far with no problems. It's so easy to get the cursor where I want. Anyway, my initial post was whether I had misunderstood this method of moving a cursor and I hadn't :) And I just moved the cursor instantly again :)
Whatever floats ones boat :)

I'm fact, writing about this just showed me how often I do this without thinking about it.

At times the insertion point doesn’t go exactly at the spot needed maybe the screen was touched off spot. So I use the 3dt keyboard method automatically, it’s faster as it’s more accurate for me. Ymmv.

Unless you've really used 3D Touch, especially for the advanced text selection then you really can't say long pressing is equivalent. Most people seem to think it's quickly highlighting a single word but you can also quickly select an entire sentence OR paragraph quickly with subtle 3D Touch presses.

That sounds fair enough. Long press on a word gives tabs either end of the word to lengthen selection but what you describe does sound like it would be quicker.

I didn’t even know I could do this with 3D Touch. Having tried it out it’s extremely useful and efficient.

I use this a lot. It’s like having a mouse. I know you can simulate the same thing on the iPad but it’s big as efficient or easy to use.

You usually replace it with something else in those cases. Or if the tech is a major fail (not something Apple usually does). Does not apply to 3D Touch.

As I mention above. Apple replaced one biometric security with another. They didn’t remove Touch ID and left everyone with passcode as the only option.

You're still describing things that happened in the past, and by Apple as well. Remember magsafe and how it was advertised as a life-saver mechanism that will rescue your laptop if someone trips on the power cord ? What was replaced with ? Or have people suddenly stopped tripping on wires ?

If they decide to drop something, they do it no matter if people were actually using it, sometimes even contradicting themselves. I believe they also call it 'courage' in order to sound better. In this particular case, it is a feature that not many people - arguably - seem to use, while causing the price of the device to go up. Since their current trend is to offer cheaper devices (or at least not more expensive) they might choose to drop this.

Still don’t believe it. And don’t think they are the same thing. Apple went all in on Mac with usb c. A cable that can now also charge the MacBooks. MagSafe even though I liked it felt redundant after usb c.

With iOS, Apple adds features that stay on devices. They might change a little bit or in how they look but they are the same. Going from one flagship phone to the next always adds functionality, they don’t remove it (major features). Remember I’m talking iOS, not hardware. Some people have no idea about control center or widgets for that matter.

3D Touch is heavily tied into the whole second layer of things and combined with the Taptic Engine gives a nice UX. Holding is not the same thing. It’s not going to happen.

Like any feature. Explained in the manual. I was imagining the op being responsible for the Force Touch section of the iPhone manual. "Just press things and see if snything happens" :)
It’s like you’re arguing against yourself... What point are you even trying to make? You’re swinging from both sides.

I cannot agree that magsafe seems redundant compared to usb-c as the latter lacks a part of functionality the former had. (e.g. if you trip over the usb-c charging cable and bring down the entire laptop, you'd wish you still had the magsafe). I mentioned the magsafe as a reply to "how can they replace something with something else that cannot offer the same functionality". Well, they do it regularly.

Regardless, it is not a matter of h/w or s/w, it is a matter of lost functionality in general, and apple does it if it serves their purpose, without asking.

If they drop the 3d touch (and that's a big 'IF' of course) it will be mostly a h/w change, not a s/w (3d touch is a h/w feature, the s/w just follows). This technology under the screen increases the price of the device. If their plans is to offer the option of a cheaper device, it seems very likely to remove such less important features (meaning features that will have the least impact if they are removed, functionality-wise).

Thinking more of it, I recall reading recently that they have patented a new tech regarding under the screen fingerprint reader. Who knows, maybe the one is blocking the other and they might have to choose.

People have already shown they are willing to buy a 1000 dollar iPhone. What they can do is remove it from the cheaper phone in the line up, iPhone 9. I would be really really surprised if Apple would remove 3D Touch from their flagship phones.

Yeah, that is also possible, that this feature will be dropped from the rumored “cheaper” model with the lcd screen.

The contrary point would be that a long press accomplishes nearly the same thing...?
Not always. For example, links within Safari. Long-press gives you a menu, whereas 3D Touch gives you a preview. I personally use the preview function quite a bit.
