I know I'm not saying anything profound, but HomePod is hands down the worst Apple product that has been released since I joined the cult (just over 10 years ago). And honestly it's not even close (and that's even including the trashcan mac pro...). For the price point, with the competition, this thing is just attrocious. Now could it catch up, sure. Could it sell well thanks to Apple fans, perhaps. But... it's just not so great.

OFFICIAL NOTICE: Please return your cult card. You are kicked out of the cult. Per Article 1, Section 1, Paragraph 1 of the cultist agreement, "thou shalt never, never write down any personal opinion of any Apple product that is not glowing, gushing praise & love... even at risk of being tagged a fanboi," you are in direct violation.

While ejected from the inner sanctum, you are welcomed- even thoroughly encouraged- to keep buying Apple products. If you buy enough of them without committing this offense again, you can reapply for membership as soon as Jan 1, 2026. If you will go well above & beyond in trying to convince others to buy Apple products and defend Apple actions no matter what those actions may be, you can apply for early re-consideration as soon as Jan 1, 2022... IF you can show at least 1000 posts where you are aggressively getting after any naysayers and/or attempting to convince total strangers to buy Apple even if the product does not seem to fit their needs.

A second offense along these lines will have the cult faithful rally with pitchforks & torches and carry a stake to your home to make a public example out of ye.

We know the withdrawal effects resulting from the cold-turkey cutoff of the koolaid supply will be excruciatingly painful, but you brought it on yourself.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye: Let all others learn the lesson of this blatant blasphemy. Comply or lose your cult card and most of the benefits therein. All hail the Apple... All hail the Apple... All hail the Apple.

;)

On a more serious note – without spoiling my other (sarcastic) post in this thread – I'm actually impressed by HomePod's audio.

That tells something of either a) how good the HomePod is, or b) how bad BeoPlay audio is – mostly at double the HomePod's price.

Then again, audio preferences are VERY individual, and will be the subject of infinite debates.

Apple bet too much on pitching Steve's legacy and branding but speakers are like fridges. No one is going to throw out a perfectly working fridge for another that's smaller, limited and more expensive. This is what happens when you have too much profit and crack.

Make a cheaper HomePod with no Siri, but with AirPlay, BT, and Aux input and I’ll buy several immediately.

It's funny how the tone of this thread has done a complete 180 flip since the launch day discussions. At that time, you'd be laughed out of town for even suggesting that the HomePod wasn't going to become the bestselling consumer electronics item in history, and yet now all of a sudden everyone has accepted that it's an underwhelming product and is selling accordingly.

I share your opinion but it's a Mac Forum where opinions vary. Life is way too short to let some fanboy's defensive anger even garner a thought. Most clear thinking consumers identified this outcome.

That balances out all the "apple never makes a bad product, apple is perfect" posts from some of our sheep members.
Viewing the world in artificial black or white choices and justifying behavior is cool don't you think?

I have the HP just for the quality speaker and for the price, sounds great for such a small device. Its a lifestyle product.
I also have 3 Echo Dots and use Alexa but in my experience Siri is less fussy than Alexa in terms of controlling my connected devices. Alexa is very much keyword driven. Now general knowledge questions Alexa will beat Siri lol.

HP is a great sounding speaker so long you have iTunes purchases or Apple Music. I have Sonos speakers as well and much prefer the HP. HP will only get better in terms of its functionality. I don't think Apple designed this for people outside the Apple eco system and lets be honest there isn't any incentive for people to buy otherwise......but thats Apple for you and in many ways missed an opportunity.
I agree. Had they opened it up to most music sources and allowed non-Apple devices to use it then sales would be better. Not sure it will ever be more than a niche product until Siri is a lot more versatile even if Android phones and tablets could use it however.

So you don't own one, not big music listener, etc. Also, the price isn't bad at all, one of issues people keep comparing it to Sonos Play one, the hardware in this one is much better and more on order of Sonos Play:5 which cost more the HP.

Without my original post, this made no sense without the context.

I would definitely buy a larger HomePod. Heck, I would even buy one the same size as the one I've got because .... Stereo! I would not buy a smaller one.

I'm not surprised that the HomePod isn't doing well, it costs too much and does too little, like a lot of Apple products lately.

If they made one as big as a house I would buy it. And what’s more I would live in it too. And in every room I would have Apple products. And get this- I wouldn’t even care what products they were just as long as there was an Apple logo on the front and it was the latest model. By the way what IS a HomePod? Doesn’t matter because I’ve ordered a dozen and I’ll find out soon enough when they arrive this week.

Actually, my bank manager recently dismissed my disproportionately high spending pattern. “Sir. For all your inexplicable and persistent blind loyalty to a company that produces overpriced goods repackaged as ‘innovative’ you might as well send Tim a blank cheque every month” he smirked. Yeah? Well the joke’s on him, because for one thing I dont HAVE a cheque book. And for another - it’s always by credit card. Beat that!.
