I think this is just the flip side of being spoiled by Scully for so long. The same thing happened when Chick Hearn became ill and then after he died. No offense to the new guys, but they're just a couple notches down.

A couple of notches down I could take. Yes, we're spoiled by Scully, by his encyclopedic knowledge, rye humor, and the subtle way he paces his announcing through a game. All of that experience and talent is difficult if not impossible to replace. But if you ask any Dodger fan (and I've asked many) what they like best about Vin Scully, they invariably say the same thing: "I feel like he's talking to me." Now that shouldn't be a difficult technique for even a modestly talented announcer to duplicate. The fact that nobody tries is the distressing part, the fact that nobody coming along is even close to filling his shoes. When he's gone, an era of baseball broadcasting will truly be over.

Frank Thomas is a monster!

Only nice thing about being 6 hours off here in France...I get to watch the video broadcast live on mlb.com. Of course, it's slow as hell, but it's better than nothing! I didn't realize there were so many people internationally who are interested in watching baseball :) .

Two homers for the Big Hurt...go A's!!
Weren't they talking about his career being over in the beginning of the season.

What a pickup for the A's...he's only going to cost them $3.1 million including all incentives.

Mets might be in trouble as El Duque might be out for the first game with a calf injury.

Carpenter for STL has a couple of losses this season where he threw less than 100 pitches, so there are exceptions. But it seems like he's effective when he throws 100-110. Today, he threw 105. Glad they pulled him then. The last game he lost, he threw 122.

STL off to a good start, though. Besides Pujols' big game, nearly every starter hit safely. That's gotta be a good thing for the Cards.

Why in the world did Torre take out Wong early.
Third time through the order was it not? I think the timing was good, based on the fact this was his first game. Wang will come out confident, and be ready to go again when needed.

Is there anyone better in the post season than Jeter?

MacNut said:
Maybe Bernie Williams.

Five years ago, maybe, but not anymore. Jeter's Mr. Clutch now. Whatever else someone thinks of Jeter or the Yankees, there's no denying he's a big-game guy.

So here we go between the Dodgers and the Mets. The Dodgers may have caught a break with the troubles in the Mets' rotation and will draw John Maine instead of Hernandez in game one. But the Dodgers lose Joe Beimel for the division series at least.

My pick for Dodgers to watch in this series are Lofton and Kent. Kenny Lofton is hungry. He's played on a lot of competitive teams, but no prize winners. He wants the ring before he retires, and he's probably thinking this could be his last opportunity. Lofton has been a steady producer all season long. Now he's motivated to excel in post-season play. I think he could.

It only goes to show how desperate the Dodgers are to find an ideal four-hole man when they've played Jeff Kent, a guy who hit less than 20 homers, in that lineup position for most of the season. Kent may be hobbled, and he may have had a sub-par season. But everybody knows, Kent has the abilities. If he can dig down deep and find that last ounce of gas, he could be a big hero.

Oh, and thanks to MLB for scheduling this game at 1:00 PM PDT. So much for getting any work done today. ;)

I think Drew and Martin could bust out this time. (Or maybe I just want them to.) Drew is pretty well-known but hasn't done anything big on the national stage, and I think this could be it. Martin is practically unknown outside Socal and people will soon be wondering where he came from. But if Lofton and Kent end up advancing us, then I'm OK with that too. ;)

Since I'm recording the game at home, I'm going to make a Herculean effort to avoid checking the score (and avoid this thread) and watch it after I get home. On the bright side, both weekend games at the Ravine are tentatively planned to be afternoon games.

Drew is the Quiet Man on the squad, not because he isn't productive but because he isn't at all flashy. I suppose I've gotten used to that, but he could break out at any time. It's easy to forget, that two-run homer against the Giants last weekend was a clutch performance. Martin is the new Paul LoDuca. He also came out of nowhere to become a fan favorite.

Good luck. Unfortunately I work at home, so exercising any sort of discipline will be near impossible. We've already decided to take off part of the afternoon to watch the game. At least we can still cover the phone and pretend to be in the office. :)

Why do they act like its benefit for Joe Morgan to do two games tonight, for me its like a punishment, god bless mute. I hate joe morgan.

Praise be to Torii Hunter!! What a spectacular goof on his part.

Kotsay? Inside-the-park-homer? It's surreal...

Let's go A's!

Publicity stunt. ESPN never passes up a chance to promote itself.

Its hard to decide who's worse Joe Morgan, Joe Buck, John Miller, Chris Berman, or Tim McCarver.

I'm surprised to hear you say that, since Buck and McCarver have been practically rooting for the Yankees for years, especially their man-crush on Jeter.

McCarver tries to over explain everything and Buck is just no good, especially when he does football. Might have to ad Bob Costas into that list too, he's another overly dramatic one.

The best announcer on fox is scooter, the ball who shows you the special pitches, man I love that little guy.

Just heard the Dodgers get two players thrown out at the plate almost simultaneously. Crazy play.

You'd chalk it up to youth, except it was Kent and Drew. So, maybe we chalk it up to two morons, then.
