I've had the shutdown problem also around 20%. Its seems to happen when I really need to use the phone or playing musicin my car. I have iphone5 /w ios 7. After reading all of these post I will go to apple store. (Plus I'm waiting to pick up rMBP 15 from store anyways)

called the apple store, of coarse theyre basically telling me make a genius bar appointment & if it needs any sort of work therell be a charge cause its out of warranty..this probably isnt going to go very well...

its happening to my flatmates iPhone 5 on iOS 7.0.3 as well ... just an hour ago it happened again around 20 %.

mines been working without any issues so far tho ... phew

My phone just shutdown at 13%. Made a Genius Bar appointment for tomorrow afternoon. I've got AppleCare on my iPhone 5, so I should be covered.

I have the same issue since updated to 7.0.3. Was able to use the phone until battery is 5% before that. Now it shut down at 15-30%.

how is it a hardware problem when ios 7 beta 6 didnt do it, but put on gm/final & now 7.0.3, and this problem magically appears?

ios 6 didnt do that, ios 7 beta 1 --> beta 6 didnt do this.

The new software could be putting higher stress on it, could be coincidence when it started. Who knows?

Is it under warranty? If so go to Apple. Don't try to fix it yourself. Not even a battery. It might not be that and the last thing you need is the 'tampering' of a third party battery getting you denied service.

And for those under warranty, don't restore it. If it doesn't happen at the store those crash logs etc might be all you have to prove anything was happening

Just got back from the Apple Store. The "Genius" said that my iPhone 5 battery was close to failure (I got the phone in October '12).

They ended up giving me what looks like a brand new iPhone 5 (if it's refurbished, it sure does look immaculate). Restoring the phone now.

My daughter's iphone 4s is shutting down at ~ 30-40% battery life remaining. This issue first appeared after she updated from ios6 to ios7. Any idea if Apple would offer me a replacement phone at a discount if it's deemed unrepairable?

APPARENTLY NOT GETTING BITCHED ABOUT ENOUGH TO APPLE, not hardware..is there anyone else with this problem that found a magical fix that i havent tried?

As others have probably said, that's what customer service is for and you should go to Apple and see how they might resolve the issue you are experiencing.

What are my chances of getting a replacement with no warranty left?

This is a software issue in ios7. I've never had it happen in ios6 nor my ip4 in ios6.
Hoping for a software fix. My ip5 was fine in ios6 n shut downs happened when in ios7 and for me when I was using camera in a cold wind outside and continuous recording and battery was around 35-40% at the time of use. Got the shut down and had to wait like 5 mins n then it would boot back up.

Plus my ip5 is week 41 so one of the first week ones when it was released last year. Still have warranty on it but will wait it out for more ios updates

To be honest it happened just once for me, around 22%, since iOS 7 installation.

For the rest of the time my iPhone 5 switched off itself around 1% ....

OK, I am experiencing this issue on both my IPhone 5 and my wife`s IPhone 5.
We are both on IOS 7.0.3. Yesterday my phone shut down and 53% while I was taking a picture. When I`ve tried to reboot it, it was complaining about low battery but when I connect it to the charger, the phone restarted and it said 55% and charging.

This is starting to become annoying. Apple ?

New update: today the iPhone shut itself off at 1% after 6 hrs 15 mins of usage time.
A good result, so the battery is not the problem. It definitely is a software issue.

My 4S would shut off at different battery levels anywhere between 1% and 40% on iOS 7.0.3

My wives iPhone 5 is doing the same thing. Its done it twice so far.
iOS 7 still needs some tweaking

finally had a enough of this issue so i talked to verizon and getting a replacement fedexed to me, should get it end of this week hopefully!

iphone 5 32 GB black iOS 7.0.3

my phone died at 30% today. been having this problem since 6.1.3

If you are experiencing this problem since iOS 6.1 then is an hw issue.

My 4S shuts down between 40% and 8% and will not restart till the phone is connected to a charger. Phone is 18 months old and did not do this under iOS6, in fact under iOS6 it would keep working on 1 or 2% for quite along time.

I can confirm 101% this does not happen on iOS 6.

During my trip to NYC on Labour Day weekend, I switched back to iOS 7 Beta 6 to use Activation Lock and being a tourist, you hear iffy stories about NYC the land of Apple dash and grab.

I've read about the 20% auto shutdown ppl started to have in Beta 6 and while I was out shooting some pics near Wall St, it happened and had to do 3 hard reset to resurrect my IP5 until I really had no power.

Currently I'm back on iOS 6 and this does not happen at all, only at the normal shutdown percentage of 0-4% the IP5 will shutdown.

PS:
Still using the same launch day IP5, nothing wrong with the battery on iOS 6.

I can assure you its happening on IOS6

I have an IP 5 on IOS 6 and in the hospital this past week it shut down with 17% left.

While it could be software its not limited to IOS 7 so I suspect hardware.

this has been going on too long wtf is this? just recently it did the worst yet..

-leave house, battery 42%
-walking outside check time, battery 42%
-10 mins later check for messages, battery 31%, phone shutsdown as it would with 1% battery, will not start again just shows plug into power screen until it "warms up", it was 10c outside not -40,with my hand in pocket holding the phone as always..
-soon as i get in the mall it started booting up the stopped and shutdown again MID BOOT..
-10 mins later boot up fully, battery 34%, shutsdown again in 1 minute
-10 mins later booted again, stayed on now the battery is 36%
-updating 2 apps over lte, battery shoots from 36% -> 20%, shuts down seconds after apps finished updating
-boots up again (boots fine when its "warm" room temp warm), battery 25%
-hour later it shutsdown again, countless reboot tries (outside again) it finally boots, battery 10%, shutsdown..
-get home, boots, battery 22%

for the next 4 hours the same shutdown/bootup battery going up and down keeps continuing until the battery is ACTUALLY down to 1%

ios 6 never ever did this, at worst it shutdown once at 4%. even using it in -15c cold winter it never did this. i always take care of my device and battery, i do the full charge/run down once or twice a month i do everything apple says on their battery faq, it has never been exposed to extreme cold or heat not even for short periods.

yes i reinstalled 7.0.3(and from dfu even though its no different), yes i wiped all network settings, yes i wiped ALL settings, yes i tried turning off lte, yes i did soft/hard reboots, yes i tried wiping everything setup as new, all same result, it is not my backup. it is also out of warranty as of sept when iphone 5 launched. im certain this is a software problem thats APPARENTLY NOT GETTING BITCHED ABOUT ENOUGH TO APPLE, not hardware..is there anyone else with this problem that found a magical fix that i havent tried?

Mine was doing the same thing, but I was barely in warranty. Took it in last night. Hardware issue they replaced the phone. Magical fix.

I would take it in even if you are out of contract. They will troubleshoot it for free, and if the problem is widespread they may take pity on you and replace it anyway.

Good luck.

Does apple replace the battery even out of warranty?

Winter is coming so it will get even worse ;)

Same thing happened to me a couple times. I was using my phone while it was still on 20% and it turned off, then today it would charge up to 28%, then it would go down to 20% as soon as I took it off the charger. I will try to go to the Apple Store next week and see what's going on with it, hopefully I get a replacement, since this has been happening a few times.

iphone5
updated to ios7.03
outside temp 23F
phone shuts down without warning
attach to charger shows red battery icon
phone restarts and immediately shows ~35->55% remaining battery
the sequence occurred 5 times over a 2 hour period
phone is no longer functional in cold weather
