my iPhone 4s shuts down in cold.

I have had the same phone for more than a year and never had this problem. I was outing Yellowstone last winter and it was below 0 and I could take photos. I update to iOS 7 and all of a sudden my phone starts turning off as soon as I try to take a photo. Today it was in the mid 30's and It did it. I have talked to other people and this is happening all over. I believe it's a software issue not a hardware issue, because the only thing that has changed in my phone is the software!! This is a very bad thing to be able to count on your phone in the cold. My son's phone saved his life the other day when he as about to freeze to death,Thank god he hadn't upgraded to IOS 7.

Apple needs to fix this!!

It only happened one time since iOS 7 installation, so it's to my battery but it is a software issue

I am having the same problem, but my phone is jailbroken and running 6.1.2. At first I thought it was the jailbreak and the updated ios7 apps not working together well. Now I read that others are having similar problems. I think it is the battery. Mine shuts down before 1-2%. I plug it in and it goes back up to 20-30%. My phone also overheats and the battery capacity drains to less than 50% when that happens. Generally battery capacity fluctuates between 65-80% with 431 battery cycles.

I want to take my phone to apple and have them look at it, but I have to restore to 7.0.4 before I do that and I do not want to lose my jailbreak. I use my phone as a hotspot for my rMini. So I am stuck with this problem for the time being. A jailbreak for iOS 7 will help a lot.

had it now since it died with 100% battery..already took it to apple before they refuse to replace cause of my "precious warranty" being expired, demanding $80. whatever take it..even this log from that time it shutdown with 100% shows it. "capacity; 100"

it failed diags at the apple store too thankfully..so far it seems back to normal, cool temp has no effect, actually see 5%, 2% etc now before it truely dies. women beside me in the apple store waiting had the same problem with the same device too..

I can assure you its happening on IOS6

----------

I have an IP 5 on IOS 6 and in the hospital this past week it shut down with 17% left.

While it could be software its not limited to IOS 7 so I suspect hardware.

Negative, this have never happen to me nor to anyone know who "reverted" back to iOS 6. A faulty battery causing an unexpected shutdown, the error will be in the logged in the diagnostics logs just like the above post.

Huh,

I am on IOS 6 and my phone goes from 17% to dead. You clearly don't know many people…

Who said anything about "Reverted"

for the next 4 hours the same shutdown/bootup battery going up and down keeps continuing until the battery is ACTUALLY down to 1%

ios 6 never ever did this, at worst it shutdown once at 4%. even using it in -15c cold winter it never did this. i always take care of my device and battery, i do the full charge/run down once or twice a month i do everything apple says on their battery faq, it has never been exposed to extreme cold or heat not even for short periods.

yes i reinstalled 7.0.3(and from dfu even though its no different), yes i wiped all network settings, yes i wiped ALL settings, yes i tried turning off lte, yes i did soft/hard reboots, yes i tried wiping everything setup as new, all same result, it is not my backup. it is also out of warranty as of sept when iphone 5 launched. im certain this is a software problem thats APPARENTLY NOT GETTING BITCHED ABOUT ENOUGH TO APPLE, not hardware..is there anyone else with this problem that found a magical fix that i havent tried?

Same problem happened here early June. Not an iOS7 problem - it was the iPhone 5 hardware, purchased on launch day. The exchange unit, manufactured this June, has been working since late June just fine.

Another foolish user on MacRumors, you clearly don't know how to recalibrate and condition your battery and now it's defective.

My launch day IP5 battery is still going supper strong.

I was stating when I "reverted" back to iOS 6, the battery shutdown bug does not happen anymore.

Sure I do and often yet 17 to zero. Had iphone since v1. Never had this happen until the 5.

Its likely a bad battery. But the issue is not exclusive to ios 7.

Just restore the phone as NEW. I know you shouldn't have to but it will most likely take care of the problem.

Yep if one is so certain it is a software issue then this is the way to test and possibly fix that.

As for why under this or that software, if it is a hardware issue it could be coincidence that it turned up now and not before.

I was at the apple store yesterday for the same problem.
He showed me the diagnostic reports for my iphone, and the report showed that my battery was in a very unhealthy state, well down in the red zone.

Since I had a faulty power button as well (and apple care+ seems to help), they gave me an iphone 5 replacement.

I'm beginning to think the issues aren't with ios 7 in general, but that many iphone 5's had sub par or faulty batteries.

When my buddy told me about this, I really thought he was making BS up. He lived with is for months,

That is something I don't get. Why live with something for months. Unless you are running jailbroken or beta software Apple will look at it. Even if they say it just needs a restore you can demand they put in a note so if the issue continues there is a record. That can help you make a case if the issue continues and their SOP doesn't go straight to replace. Any decent manager will see the notes and do something to make it happen, especially if you are still under warranty.

But living with it and being pissed off etc, especially long enough the warranty runs out just makes no sense

So has anyone tried replacing the actual battery in the iphone 5 to rule out a (hardware) issue? I'm considering it as they are pretty cheap and it only takes about 5 minutes.

Where do you get an OEM replacement battery. I do not want to get stuck with a worse battery than the one I have.

I have to agree with djtech42, I think it's a software thing. My iphone 4 is running 7.0.4 and I can surf like 9+ hrs. On my i5 the percentage jumps around and it often shuts off somewhere inside of 30%. The other day I was at 100% on the charger, I unplugged it and it immediately showed 88%. I then plugged the charger in quickly and pulled it out and it went back to 97%! I also reset all settings and did a hard reset. This made it worse. Overall I've had best luck turning the power off and back on after a full charge. So I'm going with software. We should all flood our social media sites and apples customer service center with these complaints so they have no choice but to try and fix it so we shut up about it lol. As far as an oem battery I would go with the most reputable source, not ebay.

this has been going on too long wtf is this? just recently it did the worst yet..

-leave house, battery 42%
-walking outside check time, battery 42%
-10 mins later check for messages, battery 31%, phone shutsdown as it would with 1% battery, will not start again just shows plug into power screen until it "warms up", it was 10c outside not -40,with my hand in pocket holding the phone as always..
-soon as i get in the mall it started booting up the stopped and shutdown again MID BOOT..
-10 mins later boot up fully, battery 34%, shutsdown again in 1 minute
-10 mins later booted again, stayed on now the battery is 36%
-updating 2 apps over lte, battery shoots from 36% -> 20%, shuts down seconds after apps finished updating
-boots up again (boots fine when its "warm" room temp warm), battery 25%
-hour later it shutsdown again, countless reboot tries (outside again) it finally boots, battery 10%, shutsdown..
-get home, boots, battery 22%

for the next 4 hours the same shutdown/bootup battery going up and down keeps continuing until the battery is ACTUALLY down to 1%

Sounds like there battery is at the end of its charge cycle. Apple does have a tool that allows the employee to pull up the data to see if the battery is at the end of its charge or not. If the battery is dead it is usually around 79.00 to replace I believe. As some people have said you can try and do it your self and order the part from iFixit. Or maybe check out some other phone repair places in your area as well!

UPDATE:
Yesterday I backed up my iphone (to my computer not icloud or via wifi) and did a complete restore and loaded the backup back onto the phone. Afterwards I haven't had one crash and the battery ran down to 5% with no issues at which point I plugged it in for the night.

I finally decided to fix the shut down problem on my phone. So I restored my phone as new and put it on 7.0.4. I gave up on my beloved jailbreak. I tested the phone for two days and every time it got below 20% it will shut down. One time it was at 5% and the other was at 14%. When I plug it i, it will come back to life and the meter would read more than 20%.

So since my phone is doing this on iOS 6.1.2 and iOS 7, then it had to be hardware problem.

I took the phone to the Apple store and it was packed to the gills with people. Lucky me. I was there at around 3-4 pm but I had to make an appointment at 7 pm.

The Genius tested the phone and found a bad battery. He told me that they could either replace it or give me another phone. I had to pay for either one since the phone was out of warranty. Since I had a Squaretrade extended warranty, I had them replace the phone. I will pay Apple and Square trade will reimburse me, minus a $50 deductible. I ended up paying apple 293$ tax included. Squaretrade will give me all the money back including taxes since I already paid for the deductible.

I asked the Genius if this is a common problem and he told me that he sees this problem twice a week on the iPhone 5. That is a whole lot IMO. I am in the LA county area and the store has a lot of leg room.

I am so glad I got the Squaretrade warranty. It was well worth the $89.

It boggled my mind why he lived with it for months, his GF's IP5 from launch day ran perfectly fine and in the end he got it swapped on the 10th month of warranty. Guess he didn't have the time to go maybe.

His IP5 was totally whacked, crashed with a purple or white stripe screens all the time and it wouldn't even sync during a back up or after a restore.

The Genius who swapped it out looked at crash logs on iOS 6, "panic.plist" was listed over & over again and he stated that's a faulty logic board.

Well, if you had the problem also with iOS 6 then an hardware fault was very likely

I still think it has something to do with the software. It is a bug that only affects the iPhone 5.

Happens on my 4S as well, which had an extremely reliable battery percentage for 2 years; now this.
