I've noticed that it tends to be Macrumor forums only that causes not only my phone to get hot/overheat, when it really heats up it drops the brightness too. Again only happens on this forum. Checked the battery and its Safari that kills it. I'll see how it goes and possibly return it - never experienced it on any other iphone.

My phone is experiencing battery drop too. I think it’s safari causing the phone to get extremely warm. It’s when I am browsing this forum that the battery is dropping fast.

Same over heating issue on my 12 Pro and now the 13 Pro when browsing this forum. Although I don’t blame the phone. It’s Macrumors who needs to look into adding fix the issue.

How do you know it is safari - macrumors that is killing the battery?

Doing good for me so far.

This. Is. MacRumors.

On Safari.

My 11 pro was getting hot(like SUPER hot) after getting the battery replaced last week. Then my 13 Pro was getting warm and draining battery. It was always from browsing macrumors.

I tried using Brave browser with macrumors for an hour this morning and no issues. Switched to Safari and the phone was on fire within 5-10 minutes.

Since all the blocking on Brave wouldn’t even keep me logged in, I just downloaded “Wipr” Safari extension and it works like a dang charm. Been on Macrumors for 30 minutes and the phone is still cool to the touch. Can highly recommend.

It is not the phones fault, it’s our annual pilgrimage to this site and our relentless checking it that is ruining faith in our new phones.

What a Catch-22…

Ignore the battery percentage. Turn it off if its visible. The only thing enabling the battery percentage does is cause people to obsess over it.

I’m having the same problem… this particular forum causes my 13 Pro Max to get very warm in the top left, and does a number on the battery.

What is “Wipr”? Ad-blocking software?

Maybe they’re mining crypto from our phones. The only way I can fix it, is by restarting.

Yep, and crypto mining. Works on any app that uses safari to display content as well. Has good reviews on AppStore and on some independent sites.
There are multiple ad-blocking extensions in the AppStore, but this seemed to be a great option and couldn’t be happier because my phone has not gotten warm since setting it up. Problem solved for me.

Well, sounds like a deal at $1.99. I'll be setting it up this evening. Thanks so much for the info!

Poor first day battery life after setup or new iOS version is expected, since the phone is reindexing for a while. Beyond that, as others have reported, there is some runaway JavaScript on the MacRumors site specifically. I have an ad block, so I suspect it might be related to that. It’s easy to tell, because my phone gets hot when on MacRumors forums in Safari. I’ve found that force killing Safari will stop the heat up, and using the DuckDuckGo browser instead of Safari keeps the phone from getting hot too. Hot = the cpu is running hard, which is going to use battery faster.

I returned the phone for a new one and the new one is having awesome battery life. I think I just got a dud.
Did you restore from a backup that your original phone treated poorly with battery life? Congrats on better life. What's screen on time for you today?

Hi all, I just got the 13 pro today and my battery dropped from 96% to 93% to 90% all within 2 minutes. Was just web browsing the forums. Is this normal for a new phone like does it need to calibrate or something or is something up! Sorry I don’t mean to complain on launch day!
This literally just happened to me.

Battery life had been absolutely amazing on my 13 Pro Max. I got over 9.5 hours of screen on time over about 23 hours on my first full charge.

But today my battery dropped over 10% within a very short amount of time. My phone also got very warm. The log shows 63% of the battery was taken by Chrome during that couple hour period when it started dropping fast.

Yesterday when I got 9.5 hours of screen time I was mostly using Safari anytime I was on the internet.

so long story short…. If you want to prevent battery drain while on the internet, then use Safari until Google works all the bugs out of Chrome for iOS 15.

That’s stellar battery life! Where you on wifi most of the day?

Half the day on Wi-Fi, half on lte/5G in a spotty area. had to use maps to navigate to the airport today. Was 6hr 10min screen time with 49% left before I put it back on the charger

This forum has been notorious for that. Every iPhone I’ve owned has gotten hot simply by scrolling this forum. It’s like Apple programs in an over heating function, so people don’t come here and bad mouth them.

When on the forum. Phone heats up more than even gaming and battery shows safari. Any other site seems fine.

Yeah I honestly think it’s iOS 15 or this site. My iPhone 12 Pro overheated too

Download and install the AdGuard Safari extension. My 13PM was getting extremely hot while browsing Macrumors and the battery was depleting rather fast as well. Someone here mentioned installing AdGuard safari extension and thought they were joking. They were not. My phone no longer gets hot and the battery does not deplete. Definitely give it a shot and report back!

Another user mentioned Wipr - another Safari extension. It had good reviews, so I installed that and it solved the problem. I guess something was going on with ads in the background..?

I did a few battery/heat tests to push the iPhone 13 Pro, on day 2 of ownership:
- Recorded video 1080p/30fps for 2hrs 30min straight: 55% battery was used, ~70%brightness, little heat output.
- Recorded 30 min of 4k/30 vs 1080/30: did not see much of a difference in battery life, slightly more heat
- Recorded 4k/60: in this case the phone heats up but can still be held comfortable for long periods, didn't test battery
- Recorded 1080p/30fps, peak brightness, charging at 12 or 15 watts: gets a little warm
- General app/web usage drains the battery slowly and fairly uniform 100-20%. The battery life is impressive and in line with the YouTube battery life comparison test (mrwhostheboss)
- However, I don't think video streaming is going to hit those sky high hours listed in tech specs

Notes:
- I'm using LTE, refresh up to 120, bluetooth off, wifi on
- I went through 3 iOS 15 "battery saving tips" YouTube videos. There's a lot of customizations that touch on as well. It took a few hours to go through everything and shut down features and privacy options.
- There is a battery calibration process mentioned in one of those videos. Might be helpful for someone having problems.
- Apple 5W still works well with the old USBA to lightning cable (will use for overnight charging to reduce heat and increase battery lifespan).
- Tested a Samsung 10,000mah/25watt PD power bank. On the USBC output charging appears as fast as Apples 20w charger.
