Thanks, but no thanks. The battery life isn't THAT bad. I made some common sense settings to the phone and I get great life out of it... infact, i'm TRYING to wear it down to nothing right now by playing movies at full screen brightness and I'm still waiting for it to die (last charge yesterday morning).

I like the phone looking the way it does, and it's a portion of the reason I bought the iPhone. Obviously the majority is what it is and how it works, etc, but I don't want a big clunky phone. Turn your brightness down to like 30%, which is sufficient most of the time, turn off things like WiFi/Bluetooth and calibrate the battery. I got great life on my old iPhone and while I notice this one goes a little faster than the original iPhone, we should have all been aware.

Everyone bitched at Apple last year for releasing a 2G phone because they NEEDED 3G. Apple said it was a battery life issue, and now that there's a 3G phone and you're not getting amazing battery life, you're all angry. How silly.

Aggggrrr when will people see its not 3G using up the battery life! - Its the push aspect - christ decent European 3G phones last 3/4 days without push.

i have been having the same problems with the battery life. i let it charge overnight and around noon i removed it from the charger and it died around midnight. my usage time is about 3.5 hours. I thought you were supposed to get at least 5 hours, and thats in talk time or 3g surfing. i have everything turned on except bluetooth. here is a picture of my usage time along with my remaining battery. is this normal use for the 3g iPhone?

I would turn e-mail to check manually unless you really need it going at all times. Lower your screen brightness and turn auto off. Turn off any EQ's you have turned on for iPod, this also drains some battery. And of course, if you don't need 3G, turn it off.

It's a trade off for the 3g. When the first iPhone was released everyone was complaining there was no 3g. Now there is 3g and everyone is complaining about the battery life. We are hitting up against technological bottlenecks. It isn't the fault of apple or the iPhone design.

I've already said this in another thread but I'll post here too as it is relevant.

All this talk of poor battery life is seriously premature. Put your phone through 3 full charge/discharge cycles before even thinking about your battery life. Anyone quoting their battery life on a 2 day old device cannot have done this and so their data must be viewed with some scepticism.

I have learnt to do this with every mobile phone; camera and other portable device that I've owned. I consistently get better day to day and year on year battery life than my less techy friends.

That said, no manufacturing process or quality control procedure is 100% perfect. So, if one is still getting poor battery life after 3 full charge/discharge cycles, then it's fair to say there's a problem, but not before.

So, if I've been through 5 charge cycles in 2 days....is that bad?!?! I ONLY get 2 hours of usage and 5 hours of standby when I hit the 20% mark. That is WiFi and Bluetooth off. The usage comes from a few texts, a quick AIM check, a quick Loopt check, and a few webpages. I think this is unacceptable....but I am unsure

I find that if you turn off the phone during the day, the battery won't die during your commute back home. Remember, we all bought this phone to look cool, not to actually use it.

There's probably something wrong with your iphone, I got over 5 hours of music out of the speaker from my first charge. Btw, if you have push services on, try with manual.

Oh, and when I started playing music it wasn't even full, at about 75%

There might be an issue where you use location services, it will keep the GPS running. Pure speculation, but try turning off location services in settings and see what happens. (dont use loopt)

to me the 2g version is looking cool, since they are hard to find these days and build seems to be a lot finer. I have both and after two days of use have gone back to the 2g version for many reasons. I have a feeling we will see a design change for the 32gig release.. Not impressed by the cheaper 3g version...

Oh you didn't did you??
I bought the phone, because it's features are what I need. I put a lot of pictures on my phone. I have over 2,500 photos on. Mostly of my son who lives with his mother. I also put video clips of him. I need email on the move and like having stuff like facebook and web browsing on it. I could get most of that on the blackberry (which I used to have), but the photos on it are terrible. Moving from one to the next takes forever.

I really do hope that the battery issue resolves itself with a few charge discharge cycles.

Ps. AND IT LOOKS COOL!

Unless I am mistaken. Turning location services will make no difference unless you are using applications which ask for it and it only switches on when you are using them. I don't use maps often and when I do, I don't want to go through settings to turn it on!

i am new to the iphone but i know that push on my old blackberry used to run for days. maybe that is because it was on pager networks? also, i had a pocketpc in the past and found that gps was BY FAR the worst consumer of battery power. how do i know when that is turned off? if i am running a google map and have that turned on then hit the home button to go to another app, does it turn gps off? there is no way to actually close an app so it makes me wonder if the gps is shutting down.

Push will always use up battery fast - doubt they can do much more to "fix" that with a software update as it basically means an "always on" data connection to the server

Really? I always thought Push meant that the phone would only connect and download when the server gave the signal to download? Or does that system require that the phone be connected at until the server tells it to download, like a long poll? I was hoping the phone just told the server where it was(IP addr) every so often and then waited for a packet.

Uh, which is why you hit don't allow...

I'd say that, unlike many who are expecting full battery life out of the box, your phone and/or battery has a real problem. Have you done a restore through iTunes? There is a slightly newer firmware available, but only through "restore", not "update". That may help but, if not, I'd take it back.

On my first gen iPhone, occasionally an app or something in the background would cause the battery to deplete faster than normal. The phone would also be warm to touch when not in use. A reset using the home and power buttons would fix the problem.

Just a thought. Make sure when your AIM preferences have you log off when you leave the app. Also, double check any settings like push email.

The battery does need to be conditioned. This was also a complaint about the 2G phone. When I first had mine It was barely getting through 8 hours on standby. After changing a few settings (back then) I am now able to get through 3-5 days on a single charge. I average about 20 texts a day with a little over an hours of talk time.

Turn push and BT off!

Day 1 - Battery lasted about 3 hours with BT, 3G, push, LS on. About 1.5 hours of that time was safari browsing over 3G. Did a charge that night.

Day 2 - Battery lasted about 6 hours in standby with 2 hours of 3G and GPS. Battery did drain throughout the day noticeably in standby mode. Uggh. Did a full charge (about 1.5 cycles so far). Turned off BT and Push. Used it about 45 minutes over Wifi Safari before going to bed (3G is still on).

Day 3 - Battery is about 90% overnight. Wow! I was expecting it to be about 50% or less. BT and Push really kill the battery. GPS does too, and I found I need to go into setting to turn LS off after I'm done using the GPS. Hopefully Apple will fix this in the 2.1 or 2.0.1 FW update. Will drain battery for another complete cycle today.

Push was killing my battery. Bluetooth wasn't helping. I'm hoping for someone to create an app that lets me change these as I need them from the home screen. Preferably with a changing icon (if that's possible). I really like 3G on as for one reason I don't get the chirps in my car anymore. Push I don't need, but it would be useful when I'm at work and the iPhone is charging. GPS I really love, but I want that to power down immediately after whatever I'm doing doesn't need it. Apparently it doesn't work like that yet. I'm confident that with another power cycle or two and Push+BT off I'll get good enough battery life on this device. Hopefully the 3.0 version of iPhone next year will be even better life. Heck I'd be happy with a 1.5x thick iPhone if it meant double the battery life.

Similar issues

First day i had it full battery bar. playing with it at work alot and got the 20% plugged into the usb port on pc and showed it was charging and then got the 10% warning phone was real hot too. plugged into wall outlet and left the phone alone and seems to have charged. next day at work using the phone a bit and battery bar dropped some so i plugged it in and back to full bar unplugged it later and used it a bit more few hours and the bar never moved had a funny feeling it was reading it right as my old phone did this before too so i rebooted it and got the 20% warning soon as it came on. hoping it will work itself out after a few charges and discharges

Mine is working great

I put a full charge on mine this morning....Left to work at 6...I have been playing on the internet some...texting several times...Watch couple of clips...Emailed 2-3 times and still at 75%....It now after 1130...
Oh I have also been showing friends...

My settings are on 3G and WIFI on whenever needed...Full brightness also...No worries on mine

This is because Apple used a weaker battery in the 3G according to a report from ifixit.

I charged my phone the whole morning, leaved it with display off beside me, just used it for 5 minutes and now 10 minutes showing friends google map and the battery status declined. I mean what kind of sh** is this? Apple is definitely guilty for this sh**. You can't bring a cell phone to market which isn't usable a whole day, or otherwise, bring 3G but reduce the battery efficency?! So much i like my new iPhone 3G, so much i hate the problem with the battery!

Now you know why the original iPhone didn't have 3G. 3G sucks the power down more then EDGE does.

Anyway, the battery meter is definitely off as of now as yesterday when I completely drained it. I got 20% at 3 hours of use( using 3G at 1-2 bars), but then got 10% 10 minutes later. Which then lasted another 30 minutes when the iPhone finally shut down at 3 hours and 40 minutes of use with 12 hours of standby though the meter still indicated still a bit of juice left.
