oh stop worrying!! its fine just use it regularly a Li-Ion battery stored at 100% for 3 months will lose 30% of its full capacities) SO USE IT!

You realise charge and capacity are two different things right?

People here are worried about the latter, not the former.

You're talking about the former.

lol you do realise that your talking to somebody that knows what they are talking about right?

a Li-Ion battery will loose HEALTH capacity if left in storage at a high percentage of charge - that is why Apple recommends leaving it at 50% battery CAPACITY when not using it for extended periods of time.

that is also why one must charge/discharge these batteries more often then not.

Yes It will lose 30 percent of health if stored at 100% at over fifty something degrees C for 3 MONTHS straight.

40% loss if stored at 60 degrees

I don't think a lot of people keep theirs in conditions like that.

i was still right :p just wasnt aware of the temperature levels. however, if one were to leave his laptop fully charged at his desk for a year that could cause disastrous effects (as the battery is not being given cycles when its always plugged into the power).

it is recommended that we leave the spare battery in the fridge, i may start doing that.

but my point still remains, use the battery more often then you dont and it will be fine.

i normally find my health indicator is more accurate when im running off battery power, rather then the mains.

Say what you will, I'd still like my missing 5-7% battery capacity at <20 cycles on a new machine.

My Air was similar, started at 93% and after less than a year at 87-90%

I'd be happy w. 97-99% out of the box.

what % do you discharge it to before you will charge it again?

It varies. 2% -50%. Depends on when I'm done using it.

I've gone through 3 calibration cycles w. total discharge + 5 hours sleep. Having had two Airs I'm fairly familiar w. the Apple built-in battery phenomenon and I think I got another stinker. I've reset SMC & system PRAM after second cal. to see if it would help but same results.

Bad batteries '08-9:
MBA Rev. B
iPod Nano current Gen.
iPod Touch 2nd Gen.

one should discharge to around 20%-50% on "normal" cycles, then fully discharge every 30 cycles or so. that is the latest from Apple HQ. i dont know if that would effect your battery at all.. but yea..

Just stop worrying and use the laptop :)

I'm still amazed by how many threads there are on battery health and how to treat them. Just read the manual if you're worried, otherwise, just plug it in and use it however the hell you want.

The only reason I'm concerned now is that it's new. You quickly lose the window of opportunity to have it replaced. I wish I'd been more proactive with my Air. It was new and I had the attitude of just using it. Now at less than a year old I'm looking at replacing the battery at $129. That extra 1/2 hour+ of use when mobile does come in handy. I also had the attitude of just use it with my Touch and Nano. Had questionable battery when new and it only got worse. After less than 8 months, both were getting 50-60% of rated usage. It was like pulling teeth to get a new battery because Apple likes to say "normal use." I'm not whining about 97,98,99% battery capacity. It's 93-95% in a two week old machine. Never even saw anything over 96%.

If Apple is willing to give me 5-7% off a new battery, I'd be happy. Fat chance.. If nothing else, maybe other members who think complaining about a 98% battery won't.

Hi folks,

First post, new to these boards...

Seems I'm on the other end of the battery life spectrum from what most of you seem to be posting about...

The battery on my MBP has worked great until two days ago. Now as soon as I unplug the AC cord, boom, everything shuts down. I've rebooted, removed/reinstalled battery, checked my battery updater, and gone through just about everything I could find that might provide information as the health of the battery itself. At this point I very much assume the battery is toast but it would be great to get an opinion from here before I run out and grab a new one.

STATS (according to Coconut): MBP is 34 months old and has gone through 609 cycles. Current capacity is 79% of original (4004 mAh v's 5020 mAh).

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

That's #1 and cheapest suspicion. Original MBP battery I assume?

Yes. Original battery. No surprise if it's done. It's lasted a long time and charged/drained many times.

hmmm i have a blackbook... im on 407 cycles at 97%... when i bought mine like 2years ago in december i think they changed the batteries or something in them in new macbooks.... i used to be able to get 10hrs easy

My old MBP battery was about two years old with ~200+ charge cycles and health in the high 70's, low 80's. To me it seemed like normal battery wear.... I recently got my MagSafe PS replaced and a diagnostic test revealed my battery was BAD. However, NOT DUE TO THE BATTERY HEALTH % with relation to the time in use and charge cycles.

My brand new battery is registering 99% Health and 5568 mAh capacity.

are these batteries still produced or are they old stockpile

I just put a new one in mine and in first charge 98%

What was the result of going to the Apple Store?

I am down to 95% capacity after 49 cycles on my 3 month old 13" MBP and I am more than a little concerned about its health. To the point of either trying to go to the Genius bar in Hamburg (awkward) or phoning Apple Support.

My old white macbook stayed on 100% for a long time so its quite concerning seeing such a difference for a battery that is supposed to do 1000 cycles at 80%.

That's really not so bad. It may not decay linearly anyway. I had my battery down to 20% after less than 200 cycles. Apple replaced it for me.

If that is really accurate then you have done very well indeed. My batteries have never lasted anything like that long.

What is the pattern of your battery usage vs. mains adapter time?

It only ever gets charged once its showing under an hour of charge remaining, usually using it on mains while charging but always remove once its at 100%. Gets charged most days, always sleep, never switch off (unless update). Its a launch machine from when they brought out the 13MBP last spring/summer (may was it?)

Wow, then I don't know what to say. I got a new battery literally today and after 3 cycles today it is already down to 98% health according to coconut battery. I just don't understand how people get such great life out of their batteries.

I did read somewhere though that not charging it until it was at least 50% discharged was important which may account for some of your success.

Thats gotta be disappointing for 3 cycles:confused:

I am not sure how accurate my readings are but they show the same in both coconut battery and battery health monitor. I know up until about christmas my current capacity was always higher than my original capacity (about 102%).
