How's your iOS 11 battery life?

  • Same as before, pretty good

  • Seems worse

  • Much worse

  • Better than before

I’ve said this before and I’m saying this again. OTA updates always mess something up. If you guys are having battery issues, restore the phone using iTunes and set it up as new. You can still sign in to iCloud and get your contacts, notes and passwords back.

My iPhone 7 Plus is doing pretty good. It lasts for about 9.4 hours on a full charge. It’s still not as good as iOS 10. I’ve lost about 40 minutes of usage compared to iOS 10.3.3, but at least iOS 11 works as intended. I don’t lose 10% in 15 minutes.

Restore and set it up as new. Don’t get on iOS 11.1 Beta 2 because you can’t set it up as new. I updated to Beta 1 and lost about 2 hours of my usage time compared to iOS 11.0. I then restored to iOS 11, set it up as new and without even signing into iCloud, updated to 11.1 Beta 1 and then did an “erase all content and settings”, set it up as new and signed into iCloud. That’s as clean as an update can be! Guess what! No change! The battery life was still down by 2 hours compared to iOS 11.0. I was getting 7 hours of usage. That’s when I realized that updating messes something up.

Someone was posting how for them iTunes updates always messed something up and OTA has been quite good. Ultimately for the most part either one works fine for most.

I don’t just update using iTunes. I restore and set it up as new, so I have the cleanest possible install on my phone.

What about all us people who have way too much stuff not stored in the cloud because it can’t fit :(
?

I also don’t completely understand your post. You say to do a restore but then you go on to say you had no change. I must have not understood you correctly because I’m a huge Apple noob compared to most everyone else here lol. Sorry XD

I know. It’s a major pain. Back up your photos and videos to your PC manually. You can even export some of your important text messages.

I updated to iOS 11.1 Beta 1. Updating messed it up. Then I restored it to 11.0.2 and set it up as new. Now it works fine.

Okay so can I ask a few questions please.

1. So do you believe if you’re having battery issues or weird bugs that an update in the future probably won’t fix things? And that also a restore from backup won’t fix stuff? I know you can’t say anything for certain just asking. My last backup was on 10.3.3 and I’m on an Air 2.

2. how easy would you say it is to export photos and put them back on? I have over 7000. Yes you read that right lol. I have never done anything like this before.

3. my notes are synced to my gmail so will those come back?

4, Also I have thousands of “favorites” tabs in my safari. I have iCloud safari turned on. Will that be backed up?

I do have iCloud backup turned off though.

No problem!

1. An update in the future probably will fix things, but restoring your phone and then restoring all your data from a backup probably won’t. Because you’re essentially copying back all the data that was on your iPad at the time it had bad battery life. That means whatever is causing the bad battery life is getting copied back to your device. That’s not what you want. You want a fresh version of iOS with nothing on it, so nothing can go wrong.

2. Haha I have around the same amount of photos. I used Image Capture on my Mac. I created a new folder and imported all of my photos there. Then, I used iTunes to sync the photos in that folder back to my iPhone. Note that these photos will disappear from your iPad if you delete the folder containing the photos, and resync your device. I anyways back up my photos manually to my PC, and I rarely sync my phone using iTunes, so I’m good.

3. Yes, if you sign back into gmail, you’ll get your notes back.

4. Yep just sign back into iCloud. All your favorites and bookmarks will be there

I have iCloud backup turned off too. It doesn’t make a difference.

Feel free to ask anymore questions! I’m a helper lol.

as i was advised here,
i did 2 full calibrations on my 6S+ (should do one more still)
and it finally solved the crazy battery.
it's now almost back at as it was on 10.
a little bit more drainage from a newer IOS is legit.
and i DO like the 11, so it's ok for now.

I am not into conspiracy theories but if I didn't know better I would say planned obsolescence is the goal here by wearing all batteries from all devices a lot more with these iOS updates, and later lessening the damage by releasing an update that seems to correct the problem. If Apple acknowledges there's something wrong and don't fix it then they are profiting from the bug or are more stupi.d than I imagined.

Battery apps are now showing my #2 iPAD PRO 9.7 (purchased in 2016) has lost 11-12% of its capacity, while a few months ago these figures were 6, 7%.

I know, I started using this tablet with the TStand, and never covering the front:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/ipad-pro-movies-in-bed.1959892/#post-24886415

While at the same time leaving this iPAD outside my drawer (exposed to my environment).

And from August until now I haven't been using this iPAD with auto-lock configured for less than 15, 10 minutes:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/auto-lock-and-smart-cover-battery-question.2077770/

(Notice I don't cover the naked screen anymore, or remove the TStand at any moment of the day)

Only yesterday I configured auto-lock to 2 minutes. And recently I uploaded several videos to this iPAD and started watching them everyday. So if I used for no more than a few minutes each day since 2016, I've been using for hours on a daily basis since... two months ago.

Still that loss isn't in any way similar to the one I had with my other Pro 9.7 bought at the same time that was used a lot more (and no, it didn't have more than 7, 8% loss of capacity, even after many cycles). And I mean used ALL DAY, this iPAD that is attached to the TStand was barely required.

I think iOS 11 blew it, and blew it good... my new IPP 10.5 won't leave 10 for 11 for a long time, possibly never.

It's possible that what the battery apps are saying about my device was mostly caused by the recent changes. Still there's no question that iOS 11 contributed a great deal to it.

None of the battery apps from the AppStore show correct data post iOS 10 release. Only option is coconut battery.

This one isn’t available. I used multiple apps and they all report the same thing.

None of the apps from the AppStore will show correct data because Apple has stopped providing the data since the release of iOS 10.

Coconut battery is a MacOS application & the only way to verify even close to correct battery usage data.

No strange that the battery will drain and you get some problems with new iOS version, that happens every time. It has always been like that in iOS but never in MacOS, after that MacOS Sierra, (aka Vista), now all Apple OS' have problems. That is not good, I am afraid for the future we don't have any good computing and phone OS to go to :(

In the end, I did not see much difference between the OTA upgrade of iOS 11 and its clean install via iTunes. The only thing that helped was going back to iOS 10.3.3, and the difference in terms of battery life for my 6s is huge.

Well, it seems you are wrong.

I just installed MacOs High Sierra in VMWare... meaning I used my PC and connected both iPADs in the USB port. And using this Coconut app I got the same results from the apps currently available in the Apple Store.

This is the old IPP 9.7, using iOS 11.0.3:

And this is the new IPP 10.5, using iOS 10.3.2:

Like I said, maybe the recent changes in the way the older iPAD is used made me lose 3-4% of its capacity (which I doubt considering it's been only 2 months). That would be acceptable. What isn't is the fact iOS 11 contributed a great deal to it, meaning we are not just having to recharge the device before the end of the day, we are also having to replace it sooner than we expect.

For example, if my old IPP 9.7 was going to lose the capacity to hold a charge under normal use in, say, no less than 720 days (2 years), if I would have to replace because the loss would be unnaceptable from this point onwards, with iOS 11 I bet that under the same conditions this will be reduced a few months, probably 2-4 (60-120 days).

This may not seem a lot, but it is if you want to use the same device for many years. And if you can't replace its battery at all (Apple devices aren't any good if you want to open and fix them) or have to pay a lot for a new one.

I find that calibration requires about 3 full cycles, one after another. It's annoying but I feel it's been the only way to get the thing calibrated.

as @Mene says, i did 2 cycles when the phone died and then fully charged.
and i DID see a gradual improvement between the 1st and the 2nd cycle,
so i guess a third one will do a bit more.

and also this video:

says to disable all services before the phone dies and let it charge totally undisturbed.
so i didn't do it like that, which means a full calibration "by the book" can really solve this.
don't think it should be in a row.

I don't have significant battery issues but I have noticed that NEWS seems to be the high user with background activity.

Is there really a "book"? I would like to see something more reliable than internet rumors and a guy on Youtube. Do manufacturers actually recommend calibrating batteries?
