On the 3rd full cycle ... first day at work with the watch, so normal use.

Usage: 1h 43m
Standby: 8h 43m
86%

I think I read somewhere that anything that is on the watch face as a complication automatically background refreshes ... I could be wrong though. But it might make sense to make sure the complications update accordingly.

3rd cycle update...

2h 25m usage
13h 8m standby
77%

Now this is battery life! Woot!

Battery at 59%

been like this for the past 3 days

battery went from 40% to 28% after an hours workout.

I have noticed though where the red dot is that the walkie talkie app kept coming up...maybe that's been running non stop in the background?

Have you unpaired and repaired yet?

I set mine up from a backup, so the initial battery performance wasn't so good. Presumably it had to re-index everything and do all those housekeeping tasks you typically get after a system update. On the first evening the battery was dropping about 1% every 2 minutes while idle (no GPS use or workouts). It's slightly better today although still not quite there yet. I'd say it'll take about 2 days before we can get proper results (this estimate is based on my experience updating a Series 3 device to WatchOS 5, which suffered poor battery life for the first 2 days before recovering).

Just putting this here in case anyone else gets a new Series 4 and notices unusually high battery drain, the first few days might be like that and isn't necessarily indicative of a hardware fault.
I’ve had that experience with almost every WatchOS update. First day the Watch is doing a lot of background communications and updates with your phone. By day 2 it is good again.

Same with my S4. First day battery was bad. Today I put it on about 8:00 AM and 14 hours later it is still at 57%. I did use it normally today too.

Not yet. Will give it a few days to see how the battery life is. Maybe the app was the issue I dunno. It's on 21% now.

Whenever I had battery issues with my old Apple Watch a unpair/repair always fixed it when nothing else would.

Good luck, let us know what happens.

FYI - Yesterday my 44 SS after an whole day of use (6am to 10pm) was at 72% with me constantly playing with it.

That's very impressive.

I'm working nights so I dunno if I didn't put it on charge properly and didn't charge to 100%. Will see tomorrow if it drops loads tomorrow then I will do a reset. will report back tomorrow and see if it's the same

Today I made a short phone call and sent/received a lot of texts and alerts. 6:00am - 8:00pm (now) - 65%

My poor old series 0 would be on the charger by now. :)

It’s weird as my battery life was great. Lasted 18 hours easily

Yeah, my series 0 was odd.

It would be fine for the longest time and then the battery wouldn’t even last a normal day. Nothing would resolve it until I did an unpair/repair. After that it would be fine for months. I experienced this same type behavior with my wife’s series 0 as well.

Since Last Full Charge:

Usage 4hours
Standby 1Day 2 hours

At 52%

I’m very impress. I did a 45 minuete work out and most usage were notifications and just playing around with it.

Battery status update:

Usage : 4 hours 47 minutes
Standby: 1 day 1 hour

22% now, I started from 98% (I couldn’t charge it fully before leaving).

I think I will let it drain to power reserve and then recharge completely, to see how it goes.

Anyone seen this? 20% smaller battery on the 44mm compared to 42mm.

https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Apple+Watch+Series+4+Teardown/113044#s216052
Their teardown is confusing. Did they compare 44mm (S4) to 42mm (S3) or 40mm to 38mm? They somewhat imply that both sizes have the same battery if they compare it to 42mm and 38mm.

« A newly-buffed 1.113 Wh (291.8 mAh at 3.81 V) power pack, labeled A2059.

  • ... Or it might be 1.12 Wh, depending on which side of this battery you believe.

  • Regardless, that's at least a 4% capacity increase over last year's 1.07 Wh Series 3(38 mm). However a 17% loss compared to the 1.34 Wh of the 42 mm Series 3. »

Today my battery life is more like normal. 4 hours into my day and I'm at 94%. At this rate I should end my day on 85% or thereabouts. On my Series 3 I would lose on average 1.6% per hour. This also matches what we were all so happy about back when the Series 3 was launched as per this thread.

Here is what I have done so far:

  • Disabled raise to speak. Still have 'Hey Siri' on
  • Disable tap to speak time
  • Disable walkie talkie availability
  • Disabled Background refresh for all but my essential apps
  • Removed most 3rd party apps
  • Disabled begin workout reminder****
Now, I setup this as a new device and on my Series 3 (OS4) I left all apps enabled for BAR, had 3rd party apps and just disabled the tap to speak time.

In my earlier testing nothing above really helped. But my latest change, disabling workout reminder DID have an impact. That so far seems to be my culprit.

I will see how today goes. If it looks good then I wil start to enable things until it all goes to crap again.

I have noticed that a workout will eat more battery than before. We also know that the detect workout function will give you credit for the workout it detected before you said "Yes Im working out" so the current hypothesis is that it is doing a full workout track when it thinks you are working out and working out has always had a hit on battery life.

I really dont need it to tell me ive started running or working out. The building im in usually reminds me :)

That's because at first the made an error and compared the wrong capacity. Most sites then already wrote about the 4% battery increase. Afterwards they added the 42mm bit.

But it is definitely a decrease. 40mm likely has an even lower capacity.

So basically it was a 44mm teardown and they noted a 17% loss compared to the series 3 42mm?

Put mine on late morning yesterday at 100%. I didn’t really use it much other than the obvious messages coming through and stuff like that because I was home and had my phone with me.

When I took it off last night I feel like it was still in the 60’s and I was feel pretty decent about it.

This morning it’s at 44% after just sitting overnight. Why? I need to disable something I guess, but what?

Hi,

Now that the watch is released, I was wondering how long your series 4 watches last.

Mine (40mm alu GPS) went down from 99% (at 9:00 this morning) to 73% (at 18:00), with normal usage (playing around a bit though) and without working out.

Regards,

Not impressed so far. Two+ hours of charging on first morning, and it went from 11% to 39%, then I got bored waiting, so I put it on and went for a jog. There’s a lot I like about this beautiful watch, but if I can’t get a day out of it without carrying around charger/cords wherever I go, foggetaboutit! Sending it back.

2 hours from 11% to 39%? This doesn’t seem right. I charged mine from < 5 % to 100 % in about 2 hours. Apple states 1.5 hours to 80% and 2 hours to 100%.

S3 LTE repaired it last night as OS 5 has been a major drain the past weeks.

Usage: 2hrs 27mins

60% remaining, seems low
