It is likely that most products run into these types of issues. When it happens to apple, it's news. They really are slow in their development process though, aren't they?

I remember the old self winding watches, but they didn't have a battery. What watch do you have that charges the battery by movement? I was thinking that maybe the solar charging could just be a supplement to help get longer battery life, but obviously I don't anything about the technology or how much power it could produce. You're probably correct that it is negligible, otherwise one someone would have used it on a smart watch by now.

Newer Seiko Kinetic watches have batteries but mine has a capacitor. It can run the hands for about two weeks on a charge, but that's not an awful lot of energy.

I don't know a vast amount about the technology either, but I have a solar powered LCD calculator and the size of the panel vs the 'performance' of the device don't fill me with hope.

I hope it will be more that just a watch, but will wait to see. Personally, I am looking for these wearable tech items to replace my phone, but that doesn't seem to be the direction these items are going..

There are various GSM smart watch/phones available, but I guess that's not exactly what you meant, since the screens are too small for many uses.

Speaking of the screen size issue, how about this concept for future smart glasses:

Not sure it'd be easy to get everyone to wear them. OTOH, not long ago, who would've thought that the nerds would win out, and everyone would be heads down playing with portable computers all the time !!

What purpose would be served by baiting other companies to create new devices?
It's a feint.

Apple is luring all competitors into the dead end of wearables.

Meanwhile, they are sinking all their R&D into the unheralded field of insertables.

You read it here first.

without knowing it, Apple created with the ipod nano the design of the iwatch

if only it was super slim, it would definitely be perfect :)

It's not like it's a ton of money to Samsung. And their reputation might get increased as they improve the model.

It's about time wasted in marketing as well. Also, it might just be that the watch/smart device idea is not one that would sell because inherently it's not a device that is really viable profit or function wise. In other words, you can't improve poo. It's poo and will stay that way because that's what it is.

I'll admit, as a Nerd/Geek having a smart watch sounds cool, but no way is my wife going to wear a bulky thing like that. Even if it's small her reaction was "but I can do all that on my phone? Why would I need a watch that has a small display and does a small subset of what my smartphone does?"

There is also an intelligence part of this. Corporate business is warfare. Samsung has been known to copy and jump on the bandwagon of others. Apple might of baited them just wanting to see how they would react, what they would do.

Remember, apple for the most part does not care what the Apple fans want. They make what they think the general consumer needs, or they create a device and convinces the world that they need it.

Based on the reaction to Samsung's watch, which was that the only people excited are geeks/nerds...Apple baited Samsung into doing their own pre-market research and watching the public's reaction, which was underwhelming at best.

Apple Exec 1: "Do you think people want an apple watch?"

Apple Exec 2: "Who knows? Probably too big for the average consumer to hang on their wrist"

Apple Exec 1: "Let's release a rumor and let Samsung trip over this thing. Then we can observe the public and see if there is any market. If so, we'll watch Samsung make a dumb bulky device and make our own. If not then we don't make one!"

They're not going to put a retina display on something as small as a watch screen. Sorry to disappoint you.

Actually, it's quite the opposite. A watch with a small screen is practically guaranteed to be packed with pixels. The smaller the screen, the bigger the chance that it will come with Retina display. Notice how iMac, the biggest screen, still doesn't have the Retina screen, and MacBooks were the last product category to get the Retina display. (iPad mini was an exception because it required to be light, unlike the iPad 3, which gained weight.)

Why can't they just make it solar powered in addition to regular rechargeable batteries like normal watches?

Considering nobody has seen any parts of the iWatch (afaik), I wouldn't be surprised at this point if it was just to make Samsung make a watch.

ZERO use for this product

what a waste of "innovation"

are they coming out with a "Smart Sneaker" or an "iToaster" next

mad? Then don't buy it! I don't know about you, but I'm perfectly content without an iPod shuffle, mac mini, even without an iPad. Not everything has to suit your needs and desires you know.

If this rumored device has basic iOS ecosystem connectivity then I am a buyer. My only decision then will be whether to wait for a second generation release.

Uh, cool story? You aren't making any real point. You replaced your tablet with a tablet you like better, and set-top box with another set-top box. Congrats for having a different preference than another person. I prefer the products I chose to purchase, you chose yours. That doesn't at all justify the idea that the iWatch is going to be a "mostly useless" device. Nor does it make any of the other products mentioned "mostly useless."

It makes perfect since given that you made a gross exaggeration about the OP. He stated that he doesn't use his products.

Not that he bought and NEVER used his products, which you immediately assumed for upvotes.

Giving an example of how someone can buy, use, then replace products is extremely relevant in this case. The one liner quip was totally unnecessary given that (as you even stated above) someone is going to have different preferences than someone else.

At least he's honest about it. We spend a lot of money on things that we don't need, but (pure) tablets and toys like the AppleTV fall in the category of mostly useless things - especially when you own a notebook or desktop machine.

(really this is a time waster since you've made clear that you find Apple garbage, but anyway...)

How exactly is the AppleTV a toy when it's being used by many people in their homes to stream content, view movies, listen to music etc.? Just because there other solutions that you might prefer, it doesn't degrade it to a "toy", that's a pretty dumb statement to make, even for you.

And iPads are being used professionally out there all over the place, alone over the past few days I've ran into iPads at least four times - our dentist uses them to demonstrate different procedures, the restaurant we went to on the weekend uses iPads for the waiters to submit orders, the home improvement store has iPads to demonstrate products, the fireplace/bbq place we went to to buy replacement parts for our grill uses them for their sales guys as mobile brochures and customer database front end. All these people would just laugh in your face with your "bla bla toy"-idiocy.

I'm sure it'll be nifty and all, but I guarantee you I need my car and my living room integrated before I need my wrist integrated with my phone.

I realize securing content deals is a pain in the ass, but where is the new way of watching TV Jobs said he cracked before he died years ago? Where is the iOS in the car head unit? Those are things I need a lot more than a watch that gives my the same information the phone in my hand does.

Different tools for different jobs. It's all about convenience, ease of use and appropriate form factor / GUI for the task.

Sure I could hook up my laptop to my tv to watch netlix and movies but the apple tv is a much easier solution and has HD on all netflix movies that offer it (some movies are not available in hd via a browser).

Same with the iPad. I could read on my laptop but reading on the iPad or Kindle is a better option. We are lucky to have so many well implemented solutions these days.

Astute observation

Not that he bought and NEVER used his products, which you immediately assumed for upvotes.
First, I didn't assume anything. He said he:
Can't wait to get my hands on a smart watch. It can go with the iPad I never use and the AppleTV I never use.

So psyched to have a limited version of an iPhone which I can only use with one hand.
Now, I don't know about you, but it seems like the statement is that he can't wait to buy the watch, despite knowing at this very second (without a single shred of information on the watch) that he would, and I quote, never use it. Obviously, this is likely sarcasm, but it was just a terribly bad post. His statement made little sense, and neither does your defense of it. And secondly, really? For the upvotes? As if they help me buy iProducts? I'm sorry that you don't like the fact that other people liked my comment.

Giving an example of how someone can buy, use, then replace products is extremely relevant in this case.
No it's not. The person I quoted didn't replace his products, he just says he never uses them.
The one liner quip was totally unnecessary given that (as you even stated above) someone is going to have different preferences than someone else.
The "one liner quip" was mocking his terrible post and not his well-researched opinion on a product that hasn't been announced yet. (That's sarcasm if you couldn't tell)

What would be really cool is if the iWatch had some type of "alternator" which charges the battery as you wear it, drawing from the motion of your hand/wrist.

Similar to how automatic movement winding watches with weights are made now. That would mean you might not ever have to charge the watch.

I hope the watch looks professional to wear to work (not like the current disaster "smart" watches getting released). It also better be tempting enough to win my wrist over my rolex, movado and other cherished pieces.

"Watch" Out

The longer it takes Apple to develop the iWatch, the more fearful every other company making a "smart watch" should be. They all thought they knew how to make a "smart phone" too.

But they did. Remember, the iPhone didn't have a tenth of the tech of smartphones when first released.

So we would get the iWatch, and it will cost $400, and it won't do anything but tell the time and play music.
