Stupid question maybe, but how do i KNOW if i have BATTERYGATE?

first iphone (4s), had it for a few days and i've been keeping my eye on it. generally i unplug around 730-8am and am down to 80% by 11-12. my usage:standby has been about 1:5, i turn off wifi if i'm spending the day away from a network and I don't play games--probably half of my diddling with the phone is just rearranging apps.

i'm starting to think there might be an advantage in not having percentage visible.

5.0.1 murdered my battery life, so today I got my phone replaced for reasons other than the battery life, and thankfully I receive a unit carrying 5.0, and needless to say. My battery life is GREAT. I don't think I'm gonna touch the update function on this phone until I read the reviews of the next OS

fuuuuuuuuu. I had mine replaced yesterday for the battery, and received one with 5.0, without thinking I restored to 5.0.1.....I thought they had just given me one of old supply. Now of COURSE the battery problem persists. facepalm

I noticed that my Usage time was incrementing about 30 minutes and battery draining about 7% every hour without my touching my 4S running 5.1 beta. I turned off Location Services completely but the Usage time kept incrementing at the rate mentioned above. So from Settings->Notifications, I removed all apps from Notification Center, and for each App I set Alert Style to None, turned off all other options such as Badge App Icon, View In Lock Screen, and Sound. To my surprise, my Usage time stopped incrementing unless I was actually using my phone. I fully charged my 4S over night, monitored the Usage time next day, and the Usage time was only incrementing when I was using my phone. I turned Location Services back on, and started adding apps back to Notification Center, and turned their notification options on. Most of my apps are back to where they were wrt Notification settings now, but my Usage time is not incorrectly incrementing any more. I can not explain why. I am guessing some was stuck with push notification process.

I currently have Standby time of 13 hours and 32 minutes, Usage time of 3 hours and 12 minutes with 42% of battery left. If your Usage time increases without your actually using your phone, this might be some you can try. I do not know whether this is 5.1 beta specific or not.

is this batterygate?

is it? i'd say the total time off the charger was about 12 hours.

and if i attempt to restore, what precautions should i take?

compared to some people, your battery issue is not that bad. I would just leave it, just saying.

I don't know why, but I am loosing 1% every hour in standby...
Only when the phone is fully charged it takes a while before dropping to 99%

Apples quote of 200 hours standby would be 0.5% an hour.

Likely to achieve that all radios and screen would be off during that time.

Losing an extra half percent an hour is perfect acceptable and if it truly stuck to that 1%/hour thats 100 hours standby or just over 4 days.

There is no issue with that

Is anyone else surprised that iOS5 is about 2months old now and this issue STILL exists with only one attempt at a solution? I know this will piss off the Apple Defense Force, but thats pretty crappy support and very uncharacteristic of Apple.

They gave away free cases with Antennagate, maybe this time they should give free car chargers. :D

I'm not surprised. When you look at the grand scheme if the mobile phone industry, even with this so-called 'batterygate', the iPhone still has one of the best battery lives out there.

Hi,
Im a long time lurker to this forum but this is my first post.
Thought I'd post my recent findings with my iPhone 4s.

I got my 4S on launch day and straight away, noticed the below average battery life. I was getting around 20H per charge. I was really surprised at this as IOS 5 on my iPhone 4 increased battery life!!

Like many others, I thought it was a software bug and that Apple would patch it. So when 5.0.1 was released, I upgraded straight away. Again, the battery life was poor. One thing I was noticing was that usage was almost half of standby times. Ive never paid much attention to usage and standby times, but when my phone is telling me it had been getting used for 2.5 Hrs when it was sat on my desk during a 5 hour shift not being touched, I knew something wasn't right!

On top of the battery issues, I was also getting lost network connectivity or a "No Sim" message.

So I decided to contact Apple. I was taken through the steps of setting up the phone as new but this made no difference So I decided to take the phone into a 'Genius'.

My nearest store is over an hour away so I unplugged my phone and set off. My appointment was in the afternoon so I spent a couple of hours wandering round the shops.
At my appointment, the genius hooked my phone up to the store wifi then accessed a config menu via an iPad (Very Cool!). He told me my battery was healthy and there were no network issues registering!
I pointed out my usage stats to him and he said that seemed fair enough to him!
I then pointed out that 4 hrs Standby with 2 hours usage was impossible for me on that day, which he agreed! He then agreed to swap out my phone.

The phone I received was still running IOS 5.0. I set it up in store from my iCloud backup and left.

I charged my phone that night (Wednesday) and haven't charged it since!
I am now sitting with 44% battery, 2hours 28 minutes and 1 Day 15 Hours standby and it hasn't been plugged in!!!!!!

So far I have only used stock apps such as safari, calculator, phone, messaging emails and twitter but have everything turned on.

I read a post on the apple support communities suggesting the issue is with the GPU driver so I am going to start using other apps over the coming days to see if, as suggested, apps such as Facebook use the new API's. Once Iv'e carried out these test, I may considering updating my phone to 5.0.1

Ill keep you updated and would be interested to see if anyone else has had similar experiences.

Well after running my battery down to 0% I can report I managed to get 2 Days 15 Hours usage!!
I have now started using my phone as normal and my standby time is 11h 32m, usage 1h 3m.
I am still running IOS 5.0 and I'm debating whether to update to 5.01 now

Since posting from my laptop, the usage on my phone has gone from 1H 10m to 1H 21m in 15 minutes.
The phone was sitting on my desk, not being used!!

battery can't fix , even they can fix battery only hold max to 7/8 hour for smart phone ....

why dont apple stop working on ipad/iphone/ipod , working on battery , try to make super battery like real one ,

i wish apple could make real battery raise up to 20 hour not like now 4/5 hour

that cool .....

I'm getting Usage of 7 Hours and 40 Minutes
Standby of 18 Hours and 51 Minutes

it's alright. The battery dropped 10% while i was sleeping. To be honest, i expected a bit more.

Here's hoping the iPhone 6 allows us to switch between 4G and 3G. And that the phone has a much larger battery. This way i'll be able to get maximum battery usage, as 3G suffices for me.

If you're able to the your phone off the charger in the morning and it's still on when you go to bed with 3G on and browsing, then you have great battery life! Not a lot of smart phones can even do that.

Stop asking if you have great battery life when your standby is 18+ hours with usage. Some people do have an issue, but it has to be a network issue. You guys are just perpetuating this whole battery gate thing

Oy, I would think after having this issue go on for nearly two months that we would be done with people dropping by this thread saying it's just a "battery gate thing." It's not in our heads, it's not because we refuse to charge the phone at night, and it's not a non-issue. When you compare the battery life on the 4S with the battery life on the 4, the 4S only gets 1/2 to 2/3 of the battery life on the 4 with identical usage conditions. While some drop is to be expected with the better hardware, the phone is clearly doing something in the background that is murdering the battery life (it leaks in standby and drains like crazy when in use). There is definitely an issue here and we want Apple address it. That's a legitimate concern when you pay several hundred dollars for a phone that promises around 7 hours of usage and over 8 days of standby but only gives you about 3-4 hours of use and less than a day of standby. Do you understand where we are coming from here?

Now, to get back on the topic of this thread, my battery life has mysteriously gotten much better over the past few days. Yesterday, I used the phone normally (even a bit more than normal since I used the TomTom app on a 10 minute drive) and still had 40% at the end of the day. That's exactly what I would expect with the 4S, since I used to end the day at 50% on my old 4. I haven't used my phone much today but the battery still seems to be behaving. Maybe this is all software and network related, since a week ago I was out of town and the battery was draining at a rate of 1% every 1-2 minutes of use. With fluctuations this big, I am seriously doubting the problem is hardware at this point.

I only have an iPhone 4, but 5,5 hours of actual usage is good! The people with battery problems are the ones whose batteries are death after only 1, 2 or 3 hours of usage.
