Just noticed this under location services. Has anyone tried turning some of this stuff off that is under system services? I have cell network search, compass calibration and setting time zone on. Everything else is off. Has anyone messed around with those to see if it made a difference?

5.0.1 murdered my battery life, so today I got my phone replaced for reasons other than the battery life, and thankfully I receive a unit carrying 5.0, and needless to say. My battery life is GREAT. I don't think I'm gonna touch the update function on this phone until I read the reviews of the next OS

I'm glad that my 4S battery has been running well under 5.0. I've been tempted to jump to 5.0.1, but I'm not gonna mess with a good thing. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1322839830.195148.jpg

I stream a lot of radio, music and podcasts, and I've been able to leave location services (selectively) and push notifications on: I had to leave these features turned off with my iP4 to get similar battery life.

i turned iMeasge off after the last full charge and it helped my battery life greatly. i got another hour of usage and standby went up as well...
sad when you have to turn things off when you purchase a product because of the features....

I don’t really care, I mainly use my phone at work, so just pop it on charge for an hour whilst sitting my desk.

At weekends the battery is lasting a day.

Bottom line - I love this phone, and I'm intelligent enough to realise that with more features and open communication channels, the battery will suffer.

If you think any other smartphone is going to be better, then sod off and buy one of them.

The bitching and moaning is boring

It's a legitimate gripe... Just because you're happy with the way your phone is doesn't mean everyone else is just as happy. Some people are getting terrible battery drain and it can't last "a day on the weekend". Some people are saying their phones are done by early afternoon. Mine isn't that bad, but it's still below what it should be. You bitching and moaning about other people bitching and moaning is just as boring.

My Observation...

For me, the speed at which the battery drains seems to be linked to the strength of the signal available.

At work, I have a maximum of 3 bars (usually 1 or 2) and my 4s occasionally drops down to edge. Since I'm on WiFi, the data speed or protocol used isn't very important. Now, whether or not I actually use the phone while at work, after 8 or so hours of mostly standby, I'm well below 50%.

On the weekends when I'm home and have a full 3G signal (and tend to actually use the phone more), I can go a full day and still have around 50% or more battery left.

I'm not sure if this is related to the antenna switching or if it is unique to my phone or something else entirely.

Thoughts?

Agreed. I'd be pretty upset if my battery was draining 30% in standby like or if I was only getting a few hours of use on a charge as some people are experiencing.

This is a good thought, but if it were this wouldn't the other versions of the phone be affected as well? People with bad signals would have just as bad battery drain on their iP4's as people with iP4S's in the same area. What I honestly think this can be boiled down to is a lack of the phone being able to fully go to sleep... something, somewhere is keeping the phone awake. This could account for phantom usage, but also for the people who aren't getting phantom usage and still have bad life.

It's definitely a 3G issue. I use my phone on Airplane mode with only Wifi because I'm out of the U.S. for school. Push Emails, iMessage, Camera, Siri, all get used a lot. So I don't think it's a problem with a certain app, it has to be with how the phone handles fluctuations in the 3G signal.

I did have that 30% drop in standby with phantom usage once, which i'm pretty sure was an app that was hanging. Restore from new fixed it right up and haven't had that issue since.

Not necessarily. The 4S has the new dual antenna design. If it is constantly switching between the two trying to find the best signal, that might cause significant battery drain. The iPhone 4 has a different antenna design and would not experience this issue.

if you are in an area with really low 3g reception, your battery will drain much faster. I am assuming the iPhone is boosting power to the antenna to get better reception.

It is def. A 3g issue for me atleast. Tried everything to fix standbydrain and superdrain on usage, only fix that works is turning off 3G. Still seems to use wifi to some extent thougj, so batt could still be better even with cellular data off.

My Findings

Hi,
Im a long time lurker to this forum but this is my first post.
Thought I'd post my recent findings with my iPhone 4s.

I got my 4S on launch day and straight away, noticed the below average battery life. I was getting around 20H per charge. I was really surprised at this as IOS 5 on my iPhone 4 increased battery life!!

Like many others, I thought it was a software bug and that Apple would patch it. So when 5.0.1 was released, I upgraded straight away. Again, the battery life was poor. One thing I was noticing was that usage was almost half of standby times. Ive never paid much attention to usage and standby times, but when my phone is telling me it had been getting used for 2.5 Hrs when it was sat on my desk during a 5 hour shift not being touched, I knew something wasn't right!

On top of the battery issues, I was also getting lost network connectivity or a "No Sim" message.

So I decided to contact Apple. I was taken through the steps of setting up the phone as new but this made no difference So I decided to take the phone into a 'Genius'.

My nearest store is over an hour away so I unplugged my phone and set off. My appointment was in the afternoon so I spent a couple of hours wandering round the shops.
At my appointment, the genius hooked my phone up to the store wifi then accessed a config menu via an iPad (Very Cool!). He told me my battery was healthy and there were no network issues registering!
I pointed out my usage stats to him and he said that seemed fair enough to him!
I then pointed out that 4 hrs Standby with 2 hours usage was impossible for me on that day, which he agreed! He then agreed to swap out my phone.

The phone I received was still running IOS 5.0. I set it up in store from my iCloud backup and left.

I charged my phone that night (Wednesday) and haven't charged it since!
I am now sitting with 44% battery, 2hours 28 minutes and 1 Day 15 Hours standby and it hasn't been plugged in!!!!!!

So far I have only used stock apps such as safari, calculator, phone, messaging emails and twitter but have everything turned on.

I read a post on the apple support communities suggesting the issue is with the GPU driver so I am going to start using other apps over the coming days to see if, as suggested, apps such as Facebook use the new API's. Once Iv'e carried out these test, I may considering updating my phone to 5.0.1

Ill keep you updated and would be interested to see if anyone else has had similar experiences.

After struggling with high usage numbers even without actually using it, I finally turned off both 3G and Wifi unless needed today.

Previously I would be at 3-4 hours usage and 12 hours standby with 60% battery even though I had used it less than an hour and all settings were turned OFF. This was with only Wifi on since the only time I don't have wifi is when I'm driving.

Now it is showing 34 minutes usage (only used for 25 minutes today), 11 hours standby and 93% battery remaining. Much better overall so I plan to stick to this unless some fix makes wifi usage lower.

Wow who would've thought an iPod would get better battery life than an iPhone since you just turned your phone into a glorified iPod?? Of course a device that uses radio antennas is going to drain faster than one without.

Ofcourse, but should not make a big difference in standby mode. 5% drain per hr in standby and 0-1% in standby and aurplane mode on is an indicator of bugs with wifi/3G
