The reason for turning on the status bar icon is so you can tell when your iPhone is using GPS (location) services. If the little arrow (pointing NE) is on the status bar, your phone is using location services. If you see that icon frequently, something is running that you may want to turn off.

Oh... well, I have it OFF under SYSTEM SERVICES but I still see the little arrow to let me know about LOCATION SERVICES such as weather.

So I go to Settings > Location services.

On this page, I have several of these turned ON so that they're available if I need them. I only see a little grey arrow next to weather since it's been used within the last 24 hours. The others (waze and trailhead) have nothing next to them indicating that they haven't been used lately.

On this alone, when I access weather, I see the arrow appear in the task bar.

If I go to Settings > Location Services > System Services I have everything off. So no "cell network search", "compass calibration", "diagnostic & usage", etc...

But I also have the "status bar icon" off. (just turned it on for kicks). Even with it OFF I still see the icon in the status bar when Weather, Waze, or Trailhead access my location. I was under the impression that the Status bar icon option only controled "cell network search", "compass calibration", "diagnostic & usage", etc. Therefore, if those are all off, it wouldn't make sense (or matter) to have "status bar icon" on.

am I misunderstanding?

Just to also add that I have had 3G turned off for a few days now, and have been using quite large battery-intensive apps on wifi, and it's barely down to 48% after a whole day's use.

I thOught it was because if there's a bug you'll see the gps icon. If there is and you haven't it on you won't see it and think battery drain is due to something else. I know I've seen it come on and stay on.

I have both iphone 4 & 4S, my iphone 4 also has the battery issue. I am still using IOS 4.3.3, so I turned off 3G when it is not necessary. However, my 4S does not have that option... :(

You'll get it in 5.1.

Not sure when it will be released, probably in March.

Hi:

When I check my usage, I have the same exact number for Usage and Standby. Why would this be the case? I should have tons more standby than usage. Does that mean that something is clicking while it is in standby mode?

(4S, updated iOS)

This seems to have been a bug introduced in iOS 4 (I'm now running iOS 5.0.1, iPhone 4 32GB), because previous generation iPhone users have reported it too (me included). The way I stop it is by toggling 3G and Data on, then leave them for five minutes or so then turn 3G off followed by Data.
I ususally notice it starts doing it once I've done a full charge, whether from 0% or somewhere between that and 100%. Submitting a bug report to Apple may make them realise it's a problem that needs sorting because it's not purely cosmetic, something is left running that's draining the battery when the numbers are the same.

Thanks - when you do this - does it improve your battery?

New owner of iPhone 4s on Sprint. Just switched from a HTC Evo. Is this considered good battery life? Compared to my Evo its heaven to me.

Could NEVER get that on my 4s or the wife's on Sprint. Doing that every day and then some on ATT.

The one thing I have noticed that is lacking in the battery discussions for the most part is carrier (CDMA or GSM)

I suspect that folks that are having more problems are in fringe areas on CDMA...

Can't get that either in the uk. Are the new phones different to release period ones?

My battery has been awful since i got it, i give up worrying now and it's on charge all day long.

Terrible i know - i love the phone, and i feel all phones suffer from some sort of battery issue, its if you're willing to put up with it.

I disagree, my AT&T 4S has crap battery life as well. Though, I do believe the issue is at least partially related to poor signal. I've just about given up on Apple ever fixing this and am seriously considering going back to my old iPhone 4 and selling my 4S. I like Siri and the camera on the 4S, but these features and the faster speeds do not make up for the phone losing >20% charge an hour while in use and ~5% an hour while in standby. I have to make most of my phone calls in the evening and I'm always having to charge the phone when I get home from work just to make it through the day. That's pretty pathetic when you consider that I don't use the phone very much while at work (just some texts and a little web browsing at lunch).

I was consistently able to get 1.5-2 days of use from my iPhone 4 with normal use. If I used it heavily during a particular day, I would still have ~10-20% battery left when I went to bed. I have yet to make it past about 7 PM without hitting the 20% warning on my 4S and I'm sure that I have been using it less than my 4 due to these battery issues.

I contacted Rogers to get a replacement 4S because I felt my battery had to be defective somehow. I was getting 3 hours of usage tops, I'd constantly have to mess with toggles (location services, bluetooth, push, etc) to keep myself going through the day if not just straight up charging the phone any chance I could.

My replacement arrived, in perfect condition. Build date of December. I just went through my first cycle and hit 5 hours usage, 21 hours standby, at 2% remaining. This was with location services all on, bluetooth on periodically (for A2DP headphones, car deck music streaming), 15 minutes of phone calls, constant data use, music streaming/downloading from iTunes Match, and brightness at ~75% + auto adjust.

That's perfect for me, it's actually at or better than my old 4 was. That's all I wanted :)

Best battery reading yet.. normal light use. E.g checking Twitter, email, a couple calls, texting, music while locked, and other light apps.

Usage: 9 Hours, 26 minutes
Standby: 1 Day, 7 Hours

My battery was amazing when I first got the 4S, then it went to crap, and now it's amazing again. I'm a VERY light phone user so I expect 2-3 days without having to charge my phone. Here's my latest reading:

Usage: 4 hours, 34 minutes
Standby: 2 days, 13 hours

And I still have 10% left.

It's probably have said before but after trying every 'fix' out there, I've come to the conclusion that 3G is the culprit. 3G just drinks my battery. Thank god for SBSettings :D

agree 100% try taking your sim out and then see just how incredible your battery life is! is there anyway to select just 2g?

3G is totally the culprit or whatever App is using 3G while on wifi.
I turn off 3G while I'm on wifi which is most of the time since I am at home/home office a lot and I get amazing battery life! When I have to go back on 3G my battery only gets about 4 hours use versus 9-10 hours I get when on wifi only. If I still have 3G enabled while I am on wifi, the battery drains and drains. Something is causing the 3G use even though I'm on wifi and no, I am not in a fringe area. And even if I were, what has changed since I had my 3GS which didn't do that? Answer: iOS 5.0.1.
It's something in the software I beleive.
I hope they fix this soon.

The day that IOS 5.1 is released and the day you can turn off 3G is the day people's battery life will be fixed for good...

iPhone 4S > Settings > Location Services > System Services.....

What exactly is CELL NETWORK SEARCH and is it recommended to turn this setting OFF?

I've been reading that some leave it on while others are turning it off (I assume to help with battery life).

I've been wondering the same thing. What does it do? And what happens when it's off?
