I set up as a brand new phone.. I lose 1% for every minute I have the phone on.. And 1% every 2-3 minutes in standby.. All push and sync options have been turned off...

Okay, so I was wrong. You definitely shouldn't have to turn off push notifications and sync options because in my iPhone 4 running iOS5, EVERYTHING including wifi can be on, and i won't loose more than 2-3% all night, if that.

I went to bed at 99% and woke up at 93%. I had several apps pushing me various notifications throughout the night so it wasn't doing nothing. Doesn't bother me this early in the battery's life.

I'm having really quite serious battery issues.

It's a 2 year old iPhone 3GS, updated to iOS5 two days ago and since then when on standby its draining around 20% an hour, beforehand would drain around 5% an hour. This is with iCloud, bluetooth and some other stuff off. No location based reminders on 3GS.

I restored it and did not set it up as a new phone. I want to try setting it up as a new phone to see if this helps. What process do I have to go through? I know I will lose texts and application data but frankly this doesn't interest me.

What I need to be able to keep is contacts, notes, calenders and bookmarks. How do I do this? I know I can simply resync my music and apps from iTunes via my apple account but what about everything else?

I can't wait til I can afford to buy a 4S next month or so but no way can I live with this battery drain until then, it makes the phone unusable as a phone.
Thanks

Side by side

Okay, I just got the new 4s yesterday. It does use batteries more. How do I know? I used one of my iPhone 4 models running os4.

The battery on the 4 is much better than iPhone 4s hands down. Compare for your self. You know what? I don't care. Androids have these programs running in the background all the time, killing batteries. Apple added new features that do use more juice! Turn some features off and it gets better.

Batterygate? What a silly name! I knew this battery would be a little worse, but I love ios 5 and the 4s.

Test it yourself and you will see, or go back and buy a used iPhone 4 on ios4.

As stated before, my battery life improved going form iOS 4 to iOS 5 on my iPhone 4. My guess is it has something to do with iCloud or Find my Friends. If you read the thread you would see we're not talking about a couple hours less of battery... it drains from a full charge to dead overnight.

Who here has fully charged their new iPhone's? It takes several charge and discharges for lithium ion batteries to achieve their peak.
I just had to correct you... Lithium Ion batteries don't have memory, so no, they don't need to be charged and discharged to reach maximum performance.

something definitely going on in IOS5 with batteries, we have 2 iPhone 4, i updated mine last weekend with the GM and thats fine, however my wife's phone that i did yesterday with the official release drained the battery very fast today, not sure whats going on yet, am fully charging it now and am going to monitor it again.

both have everything on, and we do have find my friends so i know where she is at every moment of the day,now i just need to track the postman;)

Same is happening with me. Ugh!

Went to bed with 100% went down to 98% when I woke up so no battery issues here, brand new iPhone not from restore as its my first one!

I only lost about 5% overnight on my 4s that's with everything running except location based reminders, and find my friends is on in setting but not actively tracking somebody. I did restore from my i4 also.

You are right that they don't have memory but their performance improves after a couple battery cycles. I've had every iPhone since 07 and they all improve about 5-10%.

Just wanted to add a concurrence here: my 4S drains faster than my 4 did, both with iOS 5. I had iOS 5 since the beta began with the 4 and it never drained this fast. I've tried turning off the "raise to ear" option on Siri this morning, and I'm going to see how that affects it.

I'm not really freaking out, because this seems to be a software issue that I'm sure will be resolved in a timely manner.

Right also just like the macbooks, they need to calibrate so unless you drained it will it turned off, there is a chance it's not calibrated correctly. I've always noticed that, going from 90-80% will be fast but going from 5% to 0 take much longer when it need calibration.

Remember that Apple said that the 4S has 100 less hours of standby time than the 4. So your percentage is going to drop more during the night if you have the phone on.

sure... but 80% to 35% overnight with no usage whatsoever? that seems excessive to me.

you are quite rite i never noticed that, its a 3rd less , still don't explain the 4 problems iv had though, the mrs did complain that it was running very hot as well.

I have a new iPhone 4S and an old iPhone 4. I set-up the new iPhone 4S as a new iPhone, not from a back-up. My iPhone 4 went from 40% to dead overnight and my alarm didn't go off. I had my iPhone 4S plugged in, but it is going down 1% a minute for just web surfing - much too fast.

I have gone back to the stone ages. I have shut off push, shut off ping, and turned off the notification center. This improved the drain a little. Since I really don't know what the benefits of iCloud are if you only are using 1 iDevice, so I may shut it off. It's not like you can see your documents or data from a work PC, so I don't think I need any data pushed from it. I can see it being useful if you want to restore your iPhone, but not from it pushing data. I don't have mail, calendar, contacts, or notes set-up on my MacBook Pro and the iPad is a family iPad, so I don't see the use for iCloud pushing data right now.
