I've found turning off the following has drastically helped my battery life:

'Ping' in General -> Restrictions (need to turn restrictions on)
'Setting Time Zone' in Location Services -> System Services
'Daignostics & Usage' in Location Services -> System Services
'Location-Based iAds' in Location Services -> System Services

Then set 'Don't Send' in General -> About -> Daignostics & Usage Data

Hope this helps someone else.

Still dropping about 1% per hour on standby but I'd consider that 'acceptable'.
i agree with these changes, but what does cell network search do?

the first day i charged mine over night, it was plugged in for 9+ hours and i woke up with a 98% charge when it was still plugged in.

my battery drained quickly that day, but today it is doing much better. it was 100% when i took it off the charger and its at 80% after 3 hours of internet radio over wifi.

OK I reinstalled the software charged to 100% have had 2 notification reminders, 1hour 30 mins later still on 100% !!

It seems the people who have the best battery life are the same ones who love and defend Apple the most. Are these people being honest and simply know more setting tweaks than the rest of us or are they making it up in order to ensure Apple doesnt get blamed for everyones problems.

That may sound mean but I'm being serious because after following peoples advice by turning off many major settings and restoring our phones then both iPhones still drain about 8% an hour unused. So I want to know if this problem is widespread or if I should keep returning it until it works like the people with perfect battery life.

Good tips. I have these setup like this too.

I also have this set up (see redmamoth's post) and it definitely seems to have helped. I found that the main culprit was:

Location Services > System Services > Setting Time Zone

By default, it's permanently set to ON which uses GPS constantly. Switch it off & you should see an improvement.

Be very interested in how this goes.

I'm charging from 55% back to 100% and will then see how it does this afternoon. As I said, I have disabled the locaiton GPS thing, and deleted and recreated my email accounts, and enabled iCloud backup which was previously disabled.

So far, it seems much better. But not sure if that's due to a discharge / recharge cycle again, or due to a restore of a new phone.

Either way:

2 Exchange
1 iCloud
Push on
Brightness half-way
Wi-Fi on

88%
Usage: 1 hour(s), 0 Minutes
Standby: 3 hour(s), 8 Minutes

fix my battery issue

I managed to fix my battery issue

I was losing 75% overnight
9am had 35% and my 10:10am it was 2%

With these stats I would be charging at least twice a day

To fix this problem I connected the iphone to Itunes and forced a restore.
It downloaded the new IOS and install

I didn't restore from backup and setup from new

Charged the battery from 0-100%

Now over night I lost 2% and its now 15:06 and i've lost 30% with heavy usage.

I have icloud,exchange using push
Location services on
Bluetooth on
3G on
Wifi on

Happy happy now

was losing 5% on standby per hour last nite, tonite after restoring doing a reset and setting up as new phone, it was still 100% after I woke up, no it wasn't in the charger. I slept fora bout 9 hours.

Batterygate is real folks.

I have tried literally everything suggested in this thread, including the dreaded restore, erasing everything. I had hopes last night that it was fixed when I saw my phone stay at 100% for a few minutes after unplugging.

Overnight Usage Times:

Wife's Non-Affected Identical iPhone 4S: 94% after 10.5 hrs off charge, all in standby. If you do the math, that equates to close to the advertised 200-hr standby.

My iPhone 4S: 67% after 4.5 hrs off charge, all in standby.

My 8-month old son woke me up at 4:30am. I had taken mine off of charge at midnight following the restore. Imagine my horror to see 67% as the battery left when I checked it.

I'm done. I'm going to the Apple store and demanding a new one. There HAS to be a manufacturing defect with mine, and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of folks have a battery lemon like mine.

"Horror"? "Lemon"? "Demanding a new one"? Take the drama down a few notches if you want Apple to take you seriously. It's a phone battery, not a heart transplant.

Be careful with the location based reminders. I set a reminder for when I leave home thru Siri when I first got the phone and It reminded me every day which also prompted the gps notifier to be on ALL the time. I completed it and the notifier went away and battery life has greatly improved.

I don't seem to have the problem of fast depleteing of the battery. Mild usage all day and had 67% when I went to bed and plugged in. My problem seems to be it not charging fully overnight. Plugged in at midnight last night, woke up at 7am and the battery was only charged to 93% from 67% when i plugged it in. Think I might have to take it in.

I'm not talking to Apple, I'm ranting on a message board. A little bit different when you go into to do a business transaction. Thankfully, I know the difference.

When you went to usage stats how many minutes did you have on the usage. Have about what your wife is getting(94/95% overnight) but i see 30 min of usage overnight even though I didn't do a thing. At 67% how many hrs/min of usage was there.

They were both left on stand-by, and since the notifications, background apps, and e-mail were set up identically, I didn't bother to check. In fact, she probably had more background processes than mine considering I had just done a full restore.

I was still getting choppy downloading of iOS 5 through iTurnes, I had to restart it twice. I guess maybe that has something to do with it? Her iOS 5 download actually went smoothly.

interesting, maybe try overnight in airplane mode that may isolate some issues. should lose 1% maybe 2, is what i get with 4s. 0% with 4

I tried Airplane mode yesterday, and it stayed at constant battery percentage throughout the hour it was on. This made me believe that it was NOT the physical battery, but an iOS 5 install problem. The restore didn't seem to help, though.

My 4S experience after 1 day of normal use for me:
Most features on
Used for an hour on BT in the car
Have an exchange account that gets a massive amount of email and calendar set to Push that is turned on
Three email accounts that fetch hourly
couple hundred txt message
A couple hours of calling
Other general "use" - I use this phone for business

Started work at 7am off charger, finished at 6:30, had 40% left. On par with my IP4.

Will give it another whirl today

I'm nearly 100% convinced this is a bug in the battery controller now.

After my own experience, I know of two other users who have had the problem where taking it off the charger immediately drops the charge down to 98 or 99%. Indicating it stopped charging prematurely.

Of those users, both have indicated it is improving over time. One finally was able to have his phone off the charger for over an hour at 100%. Aka, normal iPhone behavior.

The other friend hasn't gotten there yet, but is reporting his battery life is improving each day.

I think that, if anything, a minor software update will correct these issues. And, for most, it will work itself out over time before the update comes.

Over the first night it was better than during the day...... since last full charge, my battery has dropped 50% and my stats are:

Usage 2h34m
Standby 14h39m

Is this about normal or poor?

Also, I found that overnight on standby with push exchange emails and all services activated (cloud, photo stream, etc) I was losing 1% per hour of battery life.
