I can't wait for Anandtechs review of the 4s and to see his results on the battery life.

My guess is that the 4s will do ****** compared to last years model when Anandtech puts the 4s through his browser refresh till empty battery life tests...

Wow ... those are a lot of pages ... read till 8-9 few days back and now read the 40s ... so excuse me if someone is already mentioned this ...

As with the Android, the new kernel that Apple developed for this A5 dual-core chip is not working properly. IMO, Neither Apple nor Google have really reached a point where a dual-core processor can be utilized efficiently on a portable device.

Thats why people are seing random issues...battery meter jumping about ... sudden loss of battery (most likely because one of the cores gets stuck at 100% while other has already come down)...and more like these ...

There will be no definitive results on this issue... Apple has to work on the kernel and next few patches everyone will see the difference.

Peace !

New finding!!!
Here is something interesting for all of you. The battery is too weak for the dual core. Same with the charger. I am noticing an interesting behavior. Even after all the fixes above, as soon as I charges iPhone and use it last 99-100 % jump tales a while. After that every so often it will go from 100% charged (the plug) to 100% charging (lighting bolt). I am seriously starting to think its not just OS if anything. Any IMF you guys are experiencing this?!

Now that I think of it, this could explain the maximum 97-96 percent charge some are getting at times.
Btw yeah that just happened! I think our chargers are too weak as well. Just like you need a bigger charger for the iPad, we might need the same thin if this is indeed not just a software glitch.

Your looking to much into it man, just wait till the software updates come out and see what apple releases. we are basically the true 5.0 beta people

Interesting...

I checked my wife's iPhone 4 and even though her location services are all on (compass, time zone, etc...), they haven't been activated in the last 24 hours. My batter was crud on my 4S but since I've turned off most of those options, it's almost as good as her 4.

That may explain why peoples 4S is seeing such worse battery compared to the 4. Seems our location based services are a tad too aggressive.

PUSH settings fixed it for me

Although I don't "use" the phone 7 hours a day, I have an exchange account and an iCloud account and the phone was showing as 7 hrs usage before dying.
The exchange account I receive maybe 100 emails a day.

I couldn't work out why the phone was saying that I used the phone 7 hrs when I maybe physically used it for no more than 1 hr and now it looks like it does register usage when the phone is asleep and PUSHing emails through.

I think this may just be a bug in the phone having emails pushed through and that it is using the phone more than it should.
Maybe if I delete the iCloud and exchange accounts and set them up fresh it may fix it but last night after I charged the phone I wanted to see if it could go through the night with hardly any usage and still have a good battery so I changed the PUSH settings to FETCH and every 30 minutes.

I was very happy with the result and hopefully the phone will continue throughout the day and only needing charging late tonight (as oppose to the phone been on after a full charge from 8:00 until 17:30 and then dying at 1%)

Will see how it goes today and maybe delete then re add my accounts tonight and try PUSH again.

phone is at 100%, i placed it in Airplane mode, going to see what i wake up at.All apps are closed. if its less than 3%- tom then its something with the software..if not then its an app thats sucking the phone..I have a feeling its one of apples services (apps) thats not working as well as it should. but like its said, we are the ultimate testers. Lets see what the next iPhone firmware brings us. knowing apple within 2 weeks somethings is out the door.

Well looks like i am going to call apple todayMy battery has been hit and miss all week somedays ok others rubbish but today is terribly. Took off charge at 8.30am and made twee call lasting 13 mins battery percentage is down to86% but standby but as see from screen shot standby is less than an hour have tried all the advice on here but nothing works I will be asking for a replacement phone

Just came off the phone with apple and they agreed this was not acceptable wanted me go a store told her no not near one so sending a replacement out today and got to send mine back when it comes. Fingers crossed the next one will be better.

Did say she was putting a charge on my card then when went through said no charge on card just a postage cost of £29 paid it but will be emailing them wanting the money back as does not oct that mush to send a iPhone.

The battery in my 4S is excellent. I get about 10 hours of actual usage through the day from a single charge overnight. Also, when it's in standby, it doesn't drop any percentage at all... I was in College yesterday and had 96% battery, checked it 4 hours later and it was still at 96%. :)

However, I do have the brightness pretty low, with wifi and Bluetooth also switched off.

The most power hungry things of all though, are the things that are using the GPS constantly, which are:

Location Services > System Services (all the way at the bottom) > Setting Time Zone.

If that had a Purple arrow next to it, then you've just found your power leech. Well done.
If there's something else purple tinted in there too, try turning that off as well. :) For some horrible, nasty reason, Apple chose to hide all this information from you, unless you open up System Services and see for yourself. >.<

Since I also use Twitter, Facebook and Pages a lot, I turned off location services for them too, since they were regularly bringing up that dreaded arrow next to my battery (as if it were sucking those percentages right out). Why does Pages use Location Services anyway? LOL.

Hope this helps someone perhaps a little bit with their battery troubles. :)

Where to return the phone

I am not going to go through this much longer.

I bought the phone at Radio Shack. Do I have to deal with them or do I deal with Apple? I am looking at getting a replacement iPhone? Who is responsible for helping me with this?

I really want to know if this is acceptable or not.. Took my phone off the charger around 4pm.. It was dead around 11-12pm..
My usage was:
5hours and 30minutes of usage
7hours and 20minutes of standby
7% left

Everythiing such as location services wifi, bluetooth, siri, are off
1 email account(iCloud)...

I personally have also noticed a decrease in battery life. However, I also found a silver lining.

I could be wrong, but it seems to me this phone charges so much more quickly than the 4. Last night I put my 4S on my wall charger while I was cleaning our basement. It was at about 80%. I went back about ten minutes later and it was charged fully.

The battery might be an issue for others, but if it gets me through classes and work successfully, I have no qualms. And it does.

I've been having the same issues, as soon as you take it off dropping in percentage, having to do a wee mid day charge and so on ...

Last night tho I drained the battery completely till the phone switched off. Whacked it on charge for a solid 12 hours, been using it for an hour or two and its still on 100%. Will just need to wait and see!

I want to post something that will help the Apple engineers fix the problem, but I am mostly so disappointed that I may just send it back and wait for the iphone 5. I think I have 30 days. I HOPE so.

As aggravating as the problems you're facing are, realize that a lot of people do not have any problems. After charging yesterday morning, leaving my phone off charger overnight, I have 1 hour 49 minutes Usage, 17 hours 46 minutes Standby, and my battery level is 64% left. I do not have much of anything turned off; wifi, bluetooth, icloud, exchange, etc. are all on.

What this says to me is the problems aren't endemic to all units, and may be some combination of iOS5, app compatibility with iOS5, and individual hardware issues on some phones.

So for those with issues; take it back to Apple for service, make them fully aware of your demonstrable problems. You shouldn't have to go through a bunch of contortions turning half the usefulness of the phone off!

Get Apple to swap yours out until you're working fine, or return it and sit on the sidelines until this is sorted out.

Ok so I ran my battery down to dead charged up all night..Turned off most of the location services.Siri is on..Wifi off. MUCH better than yesterday. I was averaging 8-10% loss per hour. Im now at 92% 1hr 34min standby and 30min usage. Not great but a lot better

Do i have battery issues

my battery has been pretty decent since i got the phone, off the charger at 630AM and used on and off all day and usually around 30-40% at 10pm.
i charged my phone last night for about 8 hours and woke up and it was only at 94% full. any reason why this would have happened? all other mornings it was at 100%
3 hours later its at 91% with very little use. 2 texts and a few pushed emails..

I have noticed (as was mentioned before) that if I go through an area of no signal, my battery dies much faster. I think the new diversity antenna appears to be more aggressive with finding a signal to latch onto.

If you are sure you want to keep the iPhone then go to the Apple store for a replacement under the warranty. That will eliminate your ability to return the phone to Radio Shack though. If you want to keep your ability to return the phone then you can return the phone the Radio Shack and purchase a new one.

just got off the phone to vodafone they are going to switch mine for me. im going from a 16gb to a 32gb and from white to black.

all at no cost for my inconvenience. took a bit of moaning but im happy with the customer service now :D

update

Well, ever since I turned off cell tower search, the phone continues to perform.

Now, 25 hours standby, 5 hours 20 minutes usage, i'm still at 30%. Now is the morning of day two.

Thanks. What I want to do is just exchange the phone for a new one. Otherwise, I will have to pay a restocking fee :( I just don't want to have to fight with anyone...I don't want to have to "prove" there is a problem. So frustrating.

What does that exactly do and won't that hurt ability to have a good signal?

I've read some posts that people have had their iPhone 4S replaced by the Apple store with no questions asked. Some people have had a little more trouble. Any replacement you get from Apple should be brand new at this point since refurbished phones probably aren't available yet. If you setup an appointment with the Apple store online it should be a very easy process.

Since I restored as new phone my battery life is much improved. I have iCloud off, but everything else on. I am currently sitting at 36% with the following stats

Usage 2 hours 18 minutes

Standby 1 day 15 hours.

Compared to originally being restored from backup and from Friday (launch) to Saturday morning dropping 80%. From 100% to just around 20%.

Needless to say I am happy now. It was a pain resetting everything but it was worth it if I can keep these battery results.

Improvement

My battery performance has gotten a lot better recently. Using the phone doesn't drain the battery as fast, and standby time barely uses any (checking the phone an hour after charging showed capacity still at 100%, for example.) Maybe the battery's been "conditioned" - but it's li-ion. Maybe turning off cellular data for Docs & Data in iCloud helped - but my cellular usage is minimal. Maybe I'm simply not using the phone as much - but losing charge like it did with the screen locked isn't effected by that.

So I dunno what's really going on. I do know that I was worried when I first got the phone, but now I'm more comfortable that I'll be able to get a proper day's usage out of it.

Anybody else feel their battery performance is better now than when they first got the phone?
