Let's not **** about. Doing all the steps people say nothing really changes. On standby nor much really happens. When you start using your phone it's dropping rapidly and this is the problem. As I type this I am loosing 1% every couple of minutes. The software is using the new processor to its max and killing it's battery.

I agree about the software..let's hope they release an update soon

won't be

What if there is no software fix but it's the problem of the 4S and we are stuck with this??

we won't be, there isn't enough different between 4s to make this issue. It is software, either underlying (under the hood) os stuff or setup/config

----------

I'm now down to 71%, 1:45 minutes later. So thats about 1% an hour at most. Texting, did two phone calls, email coming in every 15 minutes.

five hours later, two phone calls (20 minutes total), lots of texting, emailing,

i'm down to 54%, so that's 4% an hour now including all those things

"Thanks for the tip, Ironex. I checked my usage since my upgrade and I have 70 GIGS downloaded. That's almost 5GB a day since I updated (to the developer final release).

I would have to constantly be streaming video to get anywhere close to that

Luckily I have unlimited data or I would be furious right now. I guess I'm going to have to try a full restore tonight..."

"i experienced the same battery drain then I received a text message from AT&T that I just exceeded my Cellular data limit. I checked usage and it was way higher than ever experienced before even while at home while on WiFi. I turned off the cellular data and the battery problem resolved. When I turned it back on the battery drain began again. I compared it to an iPhone 4S in the family which had no such cellular data/battery drain problem. All settings were the same. I first rebooted the phone, didn't help. I restored the the default settings the restored the phone from backup, didn't help. I reset the network, didn't help. Also, I reset the cellular data usage to zero on both the 4 and the 4S, The 4 is burning through cellular data like a madman possessed. I called Apple, didn't help. "

I hope this gets figured out. While my battery life has not been quite as good as my 4, I don't think it is bad. I have not messed with any settings and have one exchange account.

i had the same problems with battery drain as many people when i first got my phone. that said, i used it straight out of the box - no full charge, although it was about 80% right out of the box. when using, i'd get about 1-2% drain every 5-10mins. i knew something was up because i wouldn't get 12hrs out of my phone w/ minimal use.

following the tips listed ITT and other sites, i did the following:

- deleted all email accts & cloud
- restored phone, set up as new
- turned off ping & itunes restrictions
- in system services, turned off compass calibration, location based iads, and traffic; left status bar icon on
- all location services are left on
- from notification center, i removed stock widget (that's all)
- went into facebook app settings, turned off all push notifications (there were about 8 or so turned on)
- in icloud, turned off mail, bookmarks, notes, photostream, documents & data. also turned off icloud backup
- mail is set for fetch every 15mins
- between the steps above, i calibrated my battery - running it to power off, then recharging to 100%

since then, i've noticed significantly better battery. right now, i've been on standby for almost 9hrs, almost 2hrs of usage (texts, emails, calls, internet, map), and battery sits at 77%

Is this good?

So this is the information for my battery? Is this good, fair or bad? I unplugged it this morning at 100% to go to class, and it's now 31%. I was on whatsapp talking for an hour, push email is on, used siri a few times, did some web browing, listened to music, played angry birds etc. My battery the first 2 days was horrible, and now it's really good. What do you guys think?

wow i fully charged mine around 5 made a couple calls probally 10 minutes total, checked my email, made a couple text and been on standby for around 4 hours and im still at 95%

Anyone notice it appears to be secretly using location all the time to set timezone?

Checked 2 iPhone 4S's and the same issue

Its got a purple icon all the time but the status is disabled by default

Image

Yep. This is exactly the culprit of my battery woes and, I suspect, for most other people. It's sort of sneaky the way Apple has implemented it. The status bar icon defaults to OFF, but all of the system services default to ON. If I turn status bar icon on, clearly "setting time zone" is always on.

This is not good to hear. I'm still waiting on my 4S, my first iPhone, and now I wonder if I can even keep it. Are the people with good battery life just pulling my leg, or is this problem not happening with all 4S's?

It's only noticeable compared to the 4. Still better than Android.

So you guys be the judge for me.

iCloud disabled

No push email

Most things mentioned here disabled

No wifi usage

No blue tooth usage

5 hours 17 minutes Usage

18 hours 38 minutes stand by

I feel like based on my conservative settings that these usage stats are terrible, this is all in an area with 4 bars of service consistently.

Mostly VERY DISAPPOINTED in TINY BATTERY POWER OF Iphone 4s

I probably shouldn't even use the phrase 'battery power.' This battery has NOTHING to do with power.

I've turned off everything new--which is mostly all the fun stuff. Locators/siri/compass/itunes. Everything. I left only facebook and my phone. Did NOT HELP. The battery drains just as fast. I can almost see it going down as I watch the screen. If I keep the phone in my pocket (which I always did with my iphone4, it warms up. Never happened with the 4. That means, to me, that the 4s is 'on' even when the screen is black.

I don't want to complain. I want to post something that will help the Apple engineers fix the problem, but I am mostly so disappointed that I may just send it back and wait for the iphone 5. I think I have 30 days. I HOPE so.

Otherwise, I have signed up for a 2 year contract--and a phone much like my old iphone 3-- which I had to buy a mobie case/battery for. That's another $80.

That is not progress.

Next time, I hope the engineers don't release something that causes this much GRIEF. Either that, or TELL US. TELL US the battery may be a bigger drain. TELL US to expect some of the new features to drain the power. TELL US we might need to buy an extra battery booster just to get thru one day.

OK?

THANKS for letting me post!!

There is something odd about this "problem".

The what-should-be causes are very inconsistent. Some people report one thing helped their battery issues while others disable everything with an on/off switch in their settings and see no improvement. Granted a lot of the findings in which people deem their battery as draining too fast varies from person to person. What may be too fast for some may seem fair to another. Plus when people believe they have found the setting that is affecting their iPhone and seems to have solved the issue may only be the battery conditioning itself.

I also have faith in the software engineers at Apple and believe that they would not have release software that would intentionally drain the battery to poor standards. Thus it might be safe to assume that we can use our phones with all the functions that we want and not have to sacrifice iCloud, location based apps, or notifications and still have decent battery life. Did any of you disable these things in the iPhone 4? No.

What might this mean for iPhone 4S owners? That this might be normal consumption rate for this phone given the dual core processor, better camera, and other new hardware features. Will the battery improve with iOS 5.1, 5.2, and so on? I most certainly think so, but until then we may need to live with it.

In short, use the phone and it's features the way you want to. The causes and effects throughout this thread are completely inconsistent and you will drive yourself crazy trying to solve it. Improvements will come with time.

Guess I'll be trying this tomorrow... I drop about 10 percent an hour!!!

Looks like engadget noticed a difference in Batt between the 4 and 4s.

Update: We spent a few days shooting with the iPhone 4S's eight megapixel camera, and were quite pleased with the images it was able to capture. We were slightly less impressed with the smartphone's battery life, however -- after the same shooting period, the iPhone 4 had 52 percent remaining, while the iPhone 4S had just 30 percent left.

bgr.com on the 4s battery

Apple notes that battery life on the iPhone 4S should be comparable to the iPhone 4 even though the smartphone features a dual-core processor with two times the speed and seven times the graphics performance over the previous model. The company also notes that the iPhone 4S will perform better in some key areas, like delivering an extra hour of talk time over 3G than its predecessor. It comes at the cost of one less hour of internet usage over Wi-Fi (10% less), and 33% less standby time. At first these sound like big changes, especially in standby time, but over the last few days I didn’t notice much of a difference in battery performance compared to the iPhone 4.

Here's an anecdotal success story:

When I first got my 4S, my battery was behaving just fine, but something in the last day or two started to cause me to also have severe battery drain issues - was very obvious compared to my wife's perfectly working 4S. By lunch today my phone had dropped nearly 40% just sitting around and she was on the phone for over an hour and only dropped about 13%!

I told Siri my battery sucked and she told me where the nearest battery stores were.

I did a restore on my phone and my battery life is back to normal. Not sure what was causing the problem, but I'm slowly updating my accounts, apps and settings bit by bit - so far so good!

I assumed that setting the iCloud to "manual" that all applications were set to manual, not just email.

Could be wrong though.

I don't see how the location of this setting could suggest a manual setting for ALL iCloud functions. Granted I would love it if this setting existed.

Understood, I meant to say it would be manual for mail, contacts, and calendar since it is under this "tab".

Photostream uses wifi, find my phone is always set, and reminders may always be on push.

Not really sure.

It does? Is there a setting to where I can choose it to only sync over wifi or is that a given and I just assumed it sync'ed over cellular data as well.

No option - does it automatically.. go to settings > iCloud > photostream and you will see!

Guys, i think our best bet is to either wait for the next batch of iPhone 4S to replace ours. I don't think any other solution will work for us, otherwise we would've found one by now.
Either that or wait for Apple to release a software fix.

I'm not stopping until i get iPhone 4-like battery, i.e 1 full work day of normal usage.

Guys! I might be on to something! Do any of you by chance encrypt your Backups? I removed the encryption on mine and reuploaded the backup to iCloud (I have iCloud backups enabled) and I am seeing significantly better battery performance. No more watching the percentages drop seemingly 1% per minute. Worth a shot!
