Question:

Are those experiencing high battery drain living in weak signal areas?

If you usually get from 1 to 2 bars where you live, it's likely that the radio in the iPhone is pulling more power to communicate with your local tower, even when it's in standby and connected to WiFi.

And no, iCloud does not back up when the device is not plugged in.

Yes it does. :)

Did a side by side comparison last night. iP4 vs iP4S.

Both setup the same.

Last night @ 10pm both were 100%
This morning @ 6am the iP4 = 93%
The new iPhone 4S = 57%

Therefore it's obvious the new phone is consuming more energy.

Checked with my friend and his 4S is doing the same thing. It is what it is.
It's rechargeable so it's no big deal. Just a bit irritating.

Something in the setup is using more power, and most likely some sort of iOS5 feature rather than the phoone itself. All 3 iPhone 4S's here have been dropping 1 to 2% in 6 to 8hrs over night, and thats in line with the iPhone 4 which usually dropped 0 to 5 %, depending on the volume of emails.

My iPhone 4 (old one) and new 4S had wireless on, bluetooth on, checking 4 email addresses every 15 minutes, 3G on, push on, with regular updates from facebook averaging 10 a day and maybe 6 more over night.

iOS5 did not seem to affect the iPhone 4, but I only had it for a short time before handing the phone down to my daughter and she is still seeing what looks like 4 to 5 day life in standby with very minimal use and no email checking, and I could get 3 days with moderate use.

Relax everyone. Use your phone until it drains to zero (shuts off). Charge to 100%. Yes I know it's a hassle but a couple of calibration cycles (or at least one) works wonders on a new iPhone.

I see these threads every time a new iPhone comes out.

Glad I am not the only one. I have friends, lost iPhone an everything installed. I have wifi and Bluetooth off all the time though. With some usage I get about 8 hours of use. I took mine of charge at 9 and by 3 it's at 22 percent.
Interestingly enough I had to restore my phone using iTunes as my calmfar and dates were saying I was in year 2454 BC. And myaxi
I'm battery charge was 97 percent. That was setup as a new phone as well. After reinstall of the OS I have normal battery numbers and dates but 8 hour battery is just redicous. Btw my phone also get pretty damn hot in regular usage.

I have 2-3 bars. Usually 2 so that might explain it.

(Oh jeez not this thread again).jpg

We've had this thread with the 3GS, the 4, and now the 4S. We might have even have had it with the 3G and earlier, but I don't remember.

People, brand new iPhones WILL have incorrect battery level indicators at first, because the battery meter hasn't been calibrated. To calibrate it, charge it up to 100% and let it discharge to 10-20% or so (the lower the better, but I wouldn't let it go below 10%, even though going lower should be OK). You might have to do this a couple of times, but please don't do this too often -- lithium ion batteries do not like being significantly discharged and, the more often the battery discharges to a low level, the shorter the overall battery lifespan will be.

If you want the details, go search the archives. This issue has been hashed, chewed, rehashed, shot, dug up, and shot again. And now you're resurrecting this dead zombie.

Is anyone else's phone charge super quick, like a percent a minute or so?

I have never had this issue with my 3GS.

First night mine dropped 95% from 95% to 0% in 8 hours.

Last night (second night) it dropped from 52% to 45% over 8 hours.

It seems to be getting better. lol.

Drain it and charge it up a few times before berserking out.

Can someone help me out here...

So I'm wondering what the proper method is for charging your new iPhone 4s...

This is what I think is the proper way of going about it...

-purchase phone
-take home and use until completely dead
-charge phone up for 8hrs or so
-go on with life and use/charge phone whenever it needs to be (trying to not go below 20% before charging)
-once a month let phone completely die again and charge until it reaches 100% (2 hours or so)

Please advise...Thanks.

I don't understand why people don't plug their phones in at night when they go to bed.

I'm not sure if anyone's mentioned this, but a while ago when I was using iOS 5 beta 7, I suddenly found that my battery life became awful one day. I did a bit of Googling and found that it was caused by a problem with my push email account. I reset the account (by turning it off and on again in Mail settings) and it fixed it.

My battery was at 20% when I went to bed. Now it's at 100%. Who would of ever thought of charging your phone overnight.

The problem with discussing Apple Products is that whenever there is a complaint then people are so quick to deflect blame from Apple to the end user that they don't actually address the real world usage issues that would cause us to be unable to do the things they use in their marketing while also having enough juice to last a solid 12hrs away from an outlet. (Find where in Disney your family is, Siri tasks, Make 4S your primary camera, etc)

The 4S has some very powerful hardware and iOS5 offers many new features that could be more location/bandwidth dependent than previous versions so it would be nice to get to the bottom of what specifically is causing issues because it seems the answer goes beyond the standard "Turn off all services" or "Plug it in more" solutions.

Lithium ion batteries need a few charge cycles to reach maximum capacity that could be the problem.

wtf you guys.....

you do understand that these phones are BRAND NEW. All new iphones have to go through some recharge cycles for you to gain good battery life

Do you really think these people have never owned new iPhones before?

I agree, although I usually dont flatten it the first time - a bit of use, then full charge, and try and flatten it 2 or 3 times in the next week or two and thats it. Most nights have the phone fully charged, but that will change with wi-fi sync, but thats to be set up properly as soon as I get time, along with cloud backups

iPhone 4s battery life?!?!??!?!

My iPhone 4s is draining noticeably faster than my 4. Is it because of siri? Also the vibrate is loud.

I don't either. I have to constantly tell my people at work that with a smartphone you need to charge it nightly. Don't know why it's a big deal.

Also why is this a surprise, remember there was a 100 hour loss of standby time on the specs page.
