If I restore as new is there a way I can get my contacts back on my phone without manually inputting them? I have iCloud set up and my contacts automatically went on iPad. I can't believe it is a software issue though because my iPad has same settings and battery life has not changed since updating to ios 5.

I do mot see many post from iPhone4 users about their battery it has to be hardware right?

iPad and iPhone both have iOS5 but there are different hardware parts, different operating systems. They cater iOS5 per product...so its software not hardware, unless you have an extreme battery drain, like going to sleep and waking up with 75 percent less, then its a defective unit.

Otherwise its just software related and iPhone only...iPads have a diff OS then the phone, settings and stuff are switched around, so you can't say they are the same.

With the phones, its specifically software tweaks/patching thats needed, unless you have a defective unit. You will see if you have a defective unit vs just a battery drain usage unit.

from what I gather...

turn off all the features that are pretty much the reason that made you get a 4S and dont use your phone and you wont have any problem!

Everyone just needs to turn off the % indicator and get on with your lives. It is a supplemental device in your life! Just go get a car charger or something. I already turned off my battery indicator after obsessing over it and I feel like my battery life isnt too bad. --maybe the indicator is messed up? The other night at 1% the phone stayed on for much longer than it should have.

just sayin'

Is anyone paying attention to the claimed USAGE numbers on your iPhone vs. your ACTUAL usage? Posting pics of your usage screen showing 6/7/8 hours of usage doesn't do any good unless you're certain you've actually USED your phone for that long.

I am certain my phone is lying about my usage. It was in standby most of the day after unplugging it from a full charge and claimed I had nearly 4 hours of usage by the time the battery was down to 50%. This wouldn't be bad battery life at all if I had actually USED the phone for anywhere near 4 hours. The reality is that the phone was in standby for all but about 1 hour TOTAL during which time I made a 24 minute phone call, did a few emails & texts and not much more.

Something is up with the "usage" number for sure. Perhaps something is running in the background that's causing the extra usage and therefore the battery drain. Unfortunately, I've done a DFU restore and turned almost everything off that's been recommended in any thread, so I don't know what could possibly still be causing the background usage.

Please pay attention to your usage - particularly actual usage vs. claimed usage!

Suffering the same phantom usage here so have been doing a little digging. If I take the phone off charge and sit it unused on the desk beside me and then check usage after 1 hour; the Phone will have racked up 28-31 mins of usage for every hour of sitting on the desk.

So something is causing this usage,

First clue is visible under Settings -> General -> About -> Diagnostics & Usage -> Diagnostics & Usage Data...
In here an awdd metriclog is being generated every 30 seconds when in standby, this contains a wifi latency metric.

Second clue required the purchase of an App that gave access to the phones System Log.
Checking the syslog for a period of time the phone was in standby shows the device waking up wifi every 30 seconds an running for a number of seconds before sleeping to restart again at the next 30 second wake up.

Third clue was to check the syslog on a 3G iPad running iOS 5
This also wakes up wifi but every 15 mins not every 30 secs!

Looks like an iOS bug to me so hopefully we'll get a software fix soon.

Nice find with the logs. My 4S has about double the logs in it in the 3 days since I did a factory reset than my iPhone 4 has with nearly a year and a half usage.

This happened to me as well. I got about ten minutes of usage at 1 percent. On the iPhone 4, when it hit 1 percent, the phone would cut off within seconds.

What are peoples thoughts on this useage?

Pretty standard IMO

Mostly apps, browsing, afew calls, quite alot of iMessage/texts

Restore worked!

Earlier today I decided to restore my phone to factory settings and set it up as a new phone to see if it helps with the battery. Well it appears to have worked wonders for my phone and made the battery life stableize. I've used the phone now for browsing the web, playing with apps, and looking at photos, etc and the battery level is at 82% as of right now. Otherwise it would drop more than 50% in in just a few hours with less useage. So I am much happier to say the least, anyone else have the same results/luck?

i was wondering, how many of you went into apple store ask for diagnostic the battery and actually got a replacement?

Seem battery still droping so fast, cant even last 12hrs a day is unacceptable. :(

I have a ton of those errors in my diagnostics. My old iphone 4 has maybe 20-30.. My iphone 4s has probably a few hundred. Something's definitely up.

Looks good to me, unless you have like EVERYTHING turned off.

That's what i get now with my 4S. wifi, siri, gps, brightness at 70%, etc etc.

5.5 - 6 hours usage.

For me, this is VERY good. Better than my iphone 4. I would get about 4.5 to 5 hours usage on my iphone 4.

They do need to tweak the battery gauge, because 1% and 100% both last way too long. its sort of misleading.

Drained it to 0 last night and charged up to 100% last night as well. Took off charger at 3:30AM and now it's 10:30AM. Battery is 97% but dropped to 96% as I went into settings lol.

So about 4% over 7 hours is nearly at their quoted standby time! Usage time while I slept was 9minutes.

I kept a detailed record today, sorry for the long post I wanted to share my findings.

Only changes I made additionally today is I deleted my iCloud account, I figure I can add it to sync contacts as needed, and I turned off the auto ask for wifi.

3 emails account 1 manual, 1 push, and 1 fetch. most location services off that I do not need.

The items listed next to the % is what I did before getting to the % listed.

0130am - off charge 100%

at 1247am started up music again and it lasted until 145am

It will remain charging until 630am its in airplane mode, and tomorrow I will turn off bluetooth unless I am using it.

Im convinced that it must be software, now I just wish I did not have that camera rattle, and left of home button jiggle.

Your thoughts on my battery?

Thank You,

How were you able to get your contacts back on the phone. I can put the apps back on through iTunes really fast but I am worried about my contacts.

Your thoughts on my battery?

Freaking amazing. I don't know how some of you guys do it. I've never had more than 6 hours usage on ANY iphone. Not that i need it, because 6 is MORE than i need out of a full day. I just dont know how you guys achieve it!

I have all the bells and whistles turned on, so maybe thats it, but...

8 hours....wow.

Just for you people thinking iCloud is the culprit, for my iPad 2 this isn't the case btw. iCloud is enabled on my iPad 2, the battery was at 45% at 5PM. Now it's 11PM and it's only at 42%. From 5PM to 11PM it was in stand-by.

iPad 2 has a battery almost FIVE times the size of the iPhones battery... of course it's not going to show as big of a hit as the iPhone does.

iPad 2 battery = 6930mAh
iPhone 4 battery = 1420mAh

So if the iPad 2 has a battery 5x the size of the iPhones and lost 3% over 6 hours while in standby...

... that should equal a loss of 15% on the iPhone over 6 hours of just stand-by!!!

What's the name of the app you got that checks the system log?

Hey hey calm down :)

Just done the little "comparison" as I had with the iPad 2 on the iPhone 4. iCloud enabled, it was at 56% at 7PM, now it's 11:40PM it's at 52%. It was on stand by the whole time.

I'm gonna charge up the iPod touch 4 now (it's dead) and will be doing this "comparison" with it as well.

I have a ton of those errors in my diagnostics. My old iphone 4 has maybe 20-30.. My iphone 4s has probably a few hundred. Something's definitely up.

This is the issue, I restored my phone last night (DNP serial) and the phone dropped to 96% unplugged overnight (1030-0700hrs) and hardly any errors in the logs.

I'm pretty convinced this is software issue. I upgraded my iPhone 4 to IOS5 on the first day. On IOS4, battery was fine - I easily got 2 days of moderate use out of it. Now it's basically gone in 12 hours. Usage statistics shows it was used for a few hours - even when I wasn't literally touching it. And cellular data shows I'm using the data even when phone is on WiFi all the time
- 2-3 mb per day.

Tried everything suggested on the web. Switched off iCloud, set it up as new, switched off basically everything - no difference.

LAST NIGHT I LEFT IT IN AIRPLANE MODE AND BATTERY WENT DOWN 20 PERCENT!

Sorry for yelling, but I am pissed off. I hope they fix it quickly. So far Apple even didn't acknowledge the problem.

30% with 4hrs56min usage and 1day2hrs standby.

Also, I'm pretty confident it's merely a iOS5 bug issue. A friend's 3GS after the iOS5 upgrade has pretty much destroyed his battery life.

It's all about patience.

All I can say is I hope all you guys are submitting bug reports to Apple Because they are certaintly not reading this thread.
