My phone sat on the charger for 9 hours last night. When I woke up and unplugged it, it was at 92%. What gives?

Well here's what I do:

1. Only use location services for apps I need them for.
2. Bluetooth off.
3. Turn 3G off when in WiFi area, and turn WiFi off when in 3G area.
4. Brightness down.
5. Everything in iCloud off.
6. Kill apps after using.
7. Push email off; I check it manually.
8. Everything else is on its normal setting.

That's all I got....I can't think of anything else.

But what were ou doing on the phone to get over 3 hrs usage w such little drain?

OK, something is definitely running in the background and causing incorrect "usage" numbers on my 4S.

My phone has been unlocked and out of standby for no more than about 1 hour total since it's last full charge (estimate) and the phone is claiming 3 hours 57 minutes of usage with a battery percentage of 49%. I would be happy with roughly 4 hours of actual usage and 49% battery remaining, but there is no way in hell I've used the phone for over an hour total today including a single phone call (24 minutes), checking a few emails and facebook a couple of times and a handful of texts.

Where the hell is is the iPhone getting 3 hours and 57 minutes from????

Just for the record, I have all location services off, no iCloud, no diagnostics or wifi sync enabled and I did a DFU restore as a "new" phone last night just for giggles. I've literally disabled any/all things suggested in this thread and in other threads.

I urge you guys to start paying close attention to the usage numbers being quoted by your phone to see if it in any way aligns with your actual usage. I believe this to be the culprit.

THIS.

Don't drive yourself so crazy over this issue just to get an extra hour or so from the battery. In my opinion, based on observations, tests, and this thread, is that there are actually two issues here. People who suffer from low standby times and those who suffer from low usage times. The people who are suffering from low standby times, as in losing 20-40% over night, have a legitimate claim and should get their phones replaced.

Those who are suffering from low usage times need to realize a few things:
- The iPhone 4S will drain faster then the 4 naturally.
- iCloud will cause additional drain.
- Other features such as location based software, notifications, diagnostic data, will affect battery draining, but not nearly as much compared to the previous two points.

One of these issues is a problem, and the other is more or less normal. People perceive it as being a "problem" because of the amount of attention they are giving the issue. Dwelling on the battery dropping every time it drops 1% will make it appear like it is dropping all the time!

Long story short, don't let your phone dictate how you use it. I am personally going to give up an hour of usage so that I can use iCloud's features and going to patiently wait for software updates to improve the life. Right now it seems that 5 hours of usage is normal. :apple:

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

My phone sufing the web on 3G burns a percent every 3 min. Is that good or bad? Thanks for your input.

Maybe I'm reading far too much into this but so far my replacement 4S doesn't seem to be much better than my original!

They were both a C39G when it came to serial number. Anyone with a C39G or even a C39 with proper battery life?

I am sure we will see a IO5 update what will help with the issues seen. I think almost all the IOS releases have seen some type of battery fix after released.

Standby - 1 Day 13 hours
Usage - 6 hours 43 minutes

Still have 5% left

White 32GB 4S

I adjusted some location services settings, and i think it is very good.

Really dont see the big problem everyone is talking about

7 Hours and 9 minutes of usage

1 day and 15 hours of standby

And i am at 1%

i just turn off my battery % so i don't notice it drop or worry about it. It's basically a mini computer that makes calls in your pocket..of course it's going to drain a battery pretty fast. I get about 4-5 hours of usage before i need to charge it..all i really need

I was worrying about it when i would see it drop 1% every 2 min online..or every 5 min i am on the phone..but i don't care anymore..will just charge it every night

How? icloud has no effect on battery life.

I fail to agree, if you dig deep enough through the other threads, it was discussed that iCloud uses data constantly and could be the source of the unknown drain people are experiencing. I am just stating what worked for me, iCloud is nice, but it isn't necessary for my phone, my iPod and iPad are running it just fine though?

I'd say simply do the math:

3 min X 100
__________ = Usage time
60 min/hr

I thought of that right after I posted. Not looking good at 5 hours. I think Im going to return my phone. Ive done just about everything I know to do to extend the battery better than my 4.

Right so my first day out with my new iPhone 4S and the results aren't looking good.

It was fully charged as of this morning, and now it's sitting at 21%.

My usage stats:

"Time since last full charge

Usage: 4 Hours, 31 Minutes
Standby: 15 Hours, 54 Minutes."

 That's really crappy considering how lightly I've been using it. I had Siri set some alarms in the morning, listened to music on the way to work (30 minute train ride, just using inbuilt iPod app not Spotify), I browsed the web on my lunch break, had a couple of conversations via iMessage then I listened to some music while working out in the gym after work.

My iPhone 4 was MUCH better then this, normally if I had forgotten to charge it overnight and it was above 50% I would be comfortable leaving the house with it, knowing that it'll last me just fine. Can't do that with the 4S

Also interesting to note that for the past few hours since I got in, I've been connected to my WiFi network but have otherwise just not touched the 4S and it wiped off about 10% battery life right there and then.

Mines only like a day old though so I'm going to drain the battery right down tonight and do that whole calibration thing.

Thats fair enough but I wasn't under the impression icloud was using data unless you had it charging and locked.

My battery life with the 4 has be better on IOS 5 than it was on IOS 4

Dunno if I would. I had 4 hours of 3G internet usage time on my first 4s and my replacement I got doesn't seem to be any better :(

Might be better sticking with the 5 hours of 3G internet usage...

I'm speaking from my experience, I know that when I first received the device, I used some parts of iCloud, during that time, I noticed that my battery standby time would drain 20-30 percent when i went to sleep overnight. Also I noticed an increase in data usage. Long story short, i restored my 4S and skipped initiating iCloud, since then I have been very happy with battery life.

How have you found battery life when at home using wifi? with 3G being on....have you seen much of a difference compared to say the 4 if you had that phone before? does having 3G on matter when wifi is on?

Can't comment on the iPhone 4, the 4S is my first iPhone. I spent around 5 hrs on Wi-Fi browsing and such, some Pandora, app downloads, email, text, etc.

I got off at 4:30 today, switched to 3G around 40%, watched two episodes of Law & Order: SVU, tracked a package and now I'm below 10%.

Overall, I'm pleased with my phone now. I wonder what it is about iCloud though? Do you have it enabled?

I went to the apple store on monday and was told to reset the phone.

I came home, updated the phone via itunes and completey rebuilt

Tested and all great for a number of days

Then last night it dropped from 100% to flat in 4 hours in standby mode with nothing running.

Went to the apple store today and they confirmed to wait for 5.01 and its a known problem

I have not experienced a problem since I restored as new and not from a back up. Wonder what they are going to do software wise to fix the issue.

After reading this thread I am quite surprised to learn there are people who don't charge their iPhones overnight. I charge mine every single night. The iPhone is NOT a phone. It's a small computer that also happens to be able to make phone calls. Think about that.

I don't charge my phone unless it is needed. Example, If when I go to sleep I am at 50%, I am not going to charge my phone. So if your phone drops only 15% to 85% when its bedtime, you charge anyway? That doesn't make sense.

This is a great post. I have decided that I am not going to go the Android way and start turning off different features of the phone just to save a little battery life. That is just way too annoying to me. I'm just going to hope that Apple can come up with a software fix to help with this.
