I've not been getting these logs, and I get the same phantom usage.

also, the battery draw is still there even if wifi is disabled.

This definitely is the case. I checked my wife's iPhone 4 (which was mine until the 4S launch) and compared the logs. Bear in mind both phones were set up around the same time with the same apps an configuration. I've turned a bunch of stuff off in the meantime and she hasn't here battery life is what you'd expect mine isn't, but has improved by turning things off but still drains overnight when sat in a drawer!

Her iPhone 4 (16GB Black) has just three items in the log all relating to a crash by an app she downloaded this afternoon.

My 4S (32GB Black) has hundreds and hundreds of the awdd log errors (see attached picture).

This log seems to be sorted alphabetically. When I get to the bottom I also see errors for "LowBatteryLog" which appears to be a log entry for then the iPhone shuts down due to the battery being exhausted.

This is interesting as it logs the usage stats at shutdown. The first couple of days I plugged it in a3% or so so I don't have them but here's the ones I do have:

17 Oct 2011 17:21
AwakeTime: 04:45:44
StandbyTime: 08:53:55

18 Oct 2011 14:49:35
AwakeTime: 05:24:44
StandbyTime: 15:01:34

20 Oct 2011 16:54:22
AwakeTime: 00:00:00
StandbyTime: 00:00:00
(No stats here as the phone was rebooted after charging)

22 Oct 2011 16:32:45
AwakeTime: 04:26:20
StandbyTime: 42:31:32

Now it's getting better, but the fact it still drops 10-20% overnight when it sat in a drawer is plain wrong!

Can people with AND without issues report if they have a bunch of awdd log errors?

I have no awdd errors, but I have a ton of low memory ones. Not sure if those are normal or not.

I have many awdd logs and the phones 7 hr phantom usage is caused by push. I presume the service is getting stuck!?

I have since turned push off and set it to manual 1 hr for both exchange and iCloud until apple fix the problem.

Phone has been going for 12 hours now with a REAL 1 hr 30 usage and battery is at 75%

Very happy.

I have Low memory errors too, but only 8 of them which is insignificant compared to the ridiculous number of awdd errors.

i've not read the last 10 pages or so.. but, anyone allowing people to find you from find your friends?

It does show in your status bar when someone is looking for you, but you'd never know if your iPhone is in your pocket, this could account for at least some 'phantom' usage. If you're still it will only ask for a ping every few minutes to check where you are, but if you're moving, that's constantly going to send back if someone is looking at where you are..

Example: My dad was tracking me today as I was late to pick him up.. i didn't know he was doing it, as I had previously given him permission to see where I am whenever. I was low on battery as it was - I was running it down - needless to say the remainder of the battery was used very quickly.

30 minutes usage and 6 hrs standby just went to 95%

i know thats very little usage but a lot of people are complaining of battery drain even in standby

i turned icloud and all email accounts to manual. bluetooth was used for a few hours and i've been on wifi for a few hours. i have location services turned off for everything but cell network, traffic, and maps

3.5 hours of standby and 13 minutes of use. My battery just went from 100% to 99%. Only thing I did different was charged it with the phone off. Turned it on. Then back off for a few minutes. And didnt have wifi on at all. Did have bluetooth on for most of it though

i did a drain... let it sit for 3+ hours dead, then charged it over night turned off and that seemed to make a DRASTIC improvement so far in my battery life.

everyone should try it tonight.

Drain it till it dies.
Let it sit a few hours dead.
Charge over night turned off.

I didn't drain it till it died. i just charged it overnight with it off. when i turned it on (still plugged in) it went from 100% charged to 99% charging. so i turned it back off for maybe 15 minutes. then turned it on and it was charged and stayed charged.

so i took it off the charger and haven't plugged it in since.

i'm not sure that its necessary to completely drain it.

Full restore as new phone and freshly downloaded ios5 from iTunes fixed my battery issues
I won't be touching any settings until a fix

I let mine drain completely last night, but didn't let it sit dead, I just charged it whilst turned off overnight & I can't believe the difference it's made. I took it off charge at 8.30am this morning and it's 10pm now and I've got 70% left. I've seen nothing like this the last week, so I'd also encourage people to try this just to see what happens.

Swapped out

Went in today and the genius swapped it out without question. They had it in the back for about 15 minutes and came back with the new one. So far so good-

My wife's phone, that she got the same day I did, has no issues.

So does it get you through a day with some browsing maybe 10 min, probably 3-4h music streaming, 10-15 texts, 20 min phone calls, 10-20 min of app usage (apps like bloomberg, times) and 10-20 min word feud? That's all I need from my phone.

I thought most people charged their phone at night, I mean why not? It can be charge a thousand times right? Basically longer than most peoples contracts..

With iphone 4 I could afford to forget to plug it in one night and still survive the next day without going flat, not a chance in hell with 4s.

I did this already the other day as well. Ran it down to 0 then charged up to 100, turned off all the battery drainers in settings (location, ping, bluetooth, siri, icloud, etc) and I'm still getting dog **** battery life for both 3G (4 hours) and WiFi internet usage (6 hours)

Soon enough if it doesn't improve with the next swap I'm just gonna say "F it" - return the 4S and buy an iPhone 4 off of craigslist

Battery life is much more important to me than processor speed, siri, or improved camera. In fact, its the most important thing for me in a smartphone PERIOD...

*****do this!*****

My battery life has close to DOUBLED with what i did...

AGAIN people dont mess with location settings and all that other crap.

Do what i did.

Drain the battery.. I drained it and while it was at 1% it lasted quite a while which means to me that the % calibration is off.

I let it sit for about 3 hours. Not sure if it helped in the end but thats what I did and my phones battery life is perfect right now.

Charge the phone overnight with the phone off.

That should make a major difference. A total drain, reset and uninterrupted charge to the battery.

Just dropped to 50%. Mainly used for texting and Imessaging. I did use the camera and itorch for about 5 and 10 minutes too. Used 3G for this and some twitter/Facebook for about 10 minutes too.
Of course wifi and mobile data are on and bluetooth is off. As always.

Currently sitting on 9% with 1 day 23 hours standby and 5hrs use. Not bad but I guess I'll see how it goes when it finally goes flat later today.

4hours and 41 minutes at 36% with normal usage.

I don't think the battery meter is representing the proper battery life. My battery went down quickly from 100 to 90 today, but has been hanging around the 40 zone for a while.
Also, my battery lasts very long at 1%.

I can get about 7hours a day with normal usage, and i think that's good enough. But i don't like the quick draining i'm seeing. Or is this sub-par compared to the iPhone 4?

people on apple forums are saying they are getting phonecalls from engineers asking them questions.
they are polling the settings the users have.

My battery was great yesterday today it dropped like a rock, I was going to so a full restore but I ended up calling apple today because yesterday my phones vibration started to randomly make a louder noise. It starts out normal and half way through "ring" doubles in loudness, they are sending me out another one to swap out.

In 30 min on hold with Apple it dropped 9%

Well try this....otherwise replace it

My battery was crazy for the last several days. I had 20% at 5 PM when my iPhone 4 gave me 50-60% at that time. More ridiculous I had turned almost every single app and notification, location OFF. iCloud off, I felt I was just with an internet browser alone.....
So, After reading many posts... I decided to try the last resort.

Reluctantly, I let the battery go to 8% and did a restore; restored as a new phone. Re-installed all the apps, accounts, etc.

Let charge and left plugged in overnight.

Today, I unplugged at 6 AM. Battery was much better. I used it regularly, even on 3G and at 7 PM I had 54%.

I did go to the apple store (because I had an appointment) and the guy checked my battery and said it was fine (I saw it). He also plugged his phone and even showed me his battery was lasting less than mine. He said if I keep having issues, they will replace it but I said I will give it a try, especially during the week.

Anyway, I would try this first. AND NO, this has nothing to do with the phone not fully charging; that is a completely different issue.

hope it helps.

Reset - Reinstall - Fixed

Ended up doing exactly the same thing. After 4 days of monkeying with every one of the suggestions that have been flying around these forums and others, I finally went to the Apple Store. The guy wouldn't give me a new one because he checked my battery and said according to his 'diagnostics' the hardware was fine (meanwhile I had been going from 100 -> 30% in less than 6 hours with very, very light use). Long story short: they did the DFU reset in the store and sent me home (pissed off).

Rather than restore, I decided on the true nuclear option: rebuild. So, I *reinstalled* all my applications and content fresh (sucked it up and lost my app data). Now the battery performs perfectly, just as I would have expected, and just as my iPhone 4 did. After 6 hours of light use I still have 92% left! All the network settings and push settings, and Siri, and Location Services, etc. are still on. I think the restore of an iOS4.3.5 backup on to an iOS5 image screws up something so fully that you need to reinstall your apps fresh. Could probably hunt and peck and find the offending configuration or application state if you spent weeks at it. But it isn't worth it. The DFU - reinstall is a sure-fire way to fix the issue, painful though it may be.
