i went to the apple store yesterday, and the genius there admitted the battery life is awful. he said he used to get through work no problem and be at 40-50% at the end of his shift. now he ends at 10-20%. he said that apple is aware that many customers have been complaining about it. hopefully, there will be a software/firmware fix. we have 30 days to return it, and your upgrade also gets returned if you used one.

if no fix in 30 days...i will have some decisions to be made.

Swapped phone is a world of difference and Drained last night and did a full charge and currently 3 hours of standby 1.2 hours of usage and down to 98%. The other thing I noticed was that there was no entries on the diagnostic entries.

FYI my wife's phone never had the battery issue-

Sorry but for those who think it is software, I think you are wrong.

Some folks who have replaced are getting good battery performance.

Which tells me that this is hardware. Also we have folks who have more than one 4s in the same house but one phone is worse than the other.

Those that replace and still have a problem are just unlucky enough to get another crappy one.

I am down 15% from (100 to 85) in just 49 minutes of wifi usage. That 5 hours usage. I am really not happy about the usage. If I have a moderate to heavy day of usage it dies before I go to sleep.

It's been excellent for me. I use it off and on all day, listen to podcast, and text and take an hour or two of calls, and I am ~60% at the end of every day. I have a 32GB att model FWIW.

I got 2 4s', my wife's had comparable battery life to her 4, but mine was dropping horribly. After reading several of these battery posts I decided to do a full restore and set up as new.

Now my battery usage seems to be very good, not quite as good as the 4 it replaced, but we all know that Apple already told us the standby time would not be as good. Currently, I can go all day (7:00am - 8:00pm) with normal usage and be down to 50 - 60%. Happy with those numbers...

Obviously this is just my experience on one 4s, but it did seem to help....

I just wanted to come on and mention that I let my phone die and recharge and it is much better! I'm at 1 day 14 hours standby and 2 hours, 29 minutes usage and 24%.

This is a huge improvement because before I was at 50% with 12 hours standby.

It's DEFINITELY a software issue. TONS of people have upgraded their iPhone 4 (not 4S) to iOS 5 and set the phone up as a new phone (not from a backup) and have noticed a huge drop in battery life afterward - my sister included. How could that be a hardware issue exactly?

Agreed. Just take my iPad 2 and iPhone 4 for instance. Both upgraded to iOS 5. One, the iPad 2, has atrocious battery life and the other doesn't. I finally realize that one of the System Services on the iPad is running constantly. I'm talking 24/7. And it's eating up the battery life. The iPhone doesn't have this problem for whatever reason. Same software running a bit differently on each one.

I am 100% sure it is software. how do I know? My phone went from being perfect, to horrible, and now I fixed it WITH SOFTWARE and its fine again.

Bet on a fix soon.

Well let me clarify. There are some who have hardware issues and some with software. I think those who have upgraded their Iphone 4 who have issues are due to software settings and the fact that iOS 5 is more chatty. These folks are upset because they are getting less performance from their batteries but they aren't complaining about HORRENDOUS performance.

Then there are those who are getting 4 to 5 hours of usage on a 4s after tweaking settings, draining the battery, reinstalling with DFU mode and the like and are not getting much better performance (I do think they are getting slightly better but not MUCH better). These are the folks (myself included) who have hardware issues.

Then there are those that HAVE NO ISSUES and very happy...WITH phones not tweaked...right out of the box.

These are the reasons why I think some (most) of the people here have hardware problems. Look, I would rather this not be the case. It sucks.

Read the post above yours...
Theres a problem with sticky settings. When you alter certain settings its causing constant errors in standby and during usage.

My 4s is fine now.

I ended up doing a restore as new and reinstalling all my apps and adding back my accounts.

I noticed I didn't lose anything during the 6 hours I slept which was a first and I was optimistic my problem had been resolved. Unfortunately my battery drain while using the phone is still awful. I'm down to 68% after 5 hours. It's reporting 2 of those hours as being usage. I can literally watch it drop 1% every 2 minutes or so when the screen is on.

Everybody I know, me included is reporting TERRIBLE battery life compared to their iPhone 4.

Mine is about 30% worse with exactly the same features enabled as I had on my iPhone 4.

I cancelled my Genius appointment and did another full discharge and overnight recharge and it is like a miracle. Currently at 88% and usage 1 hr 4 minutes and 4 hours standby.... Yesterday my phone would be almost dead... How do these numbers look? I am hearing rumors of an iOS update in the next week....

The Tier Two Apple Support Engineer that called my cell to ask questions regarding my setup after my call to them for battery issues and support.

Well, got mine replaced today without any argument.. fingers crossed, currently charging up.. will report tomorrow how it fares overnight.

Spoke Too Soon

Update here:
https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/13694457/

Only to have the new one go belly up like a dead fish in murky water.

Went dead from 40% to Zero in moments as I watched in disbelief.

No way to save it. AppleCare says the obvious, take it to a genius.
The same thing I just did with the first one.

The Good News?
Apple Store is only 2 miles from home.

Just another not so exciting episode, in the continuing Saga...

How bad IS Apple slipping ?

Tune in tomorrow, same time, same place.

Good thing the manager and lead genius are great people to deal with. We always have a good laugh.

The unspoken, yet obvious is Apples decline in consistency & quality control.

Hey, if you can't count on them, at least look at the bright side (I've got a fantastic SGS II) and have a laugh.

It won't be long and Apple will have to improve. Even rabid fanbois would get tired of this routine.

Second full charge with iCloud off and everything else on.

Usage 3 hours 17 minutes

Standby 2 days 8 hours

That is with 2% battery life left.
