I think at this point we all know it is a software issue and I think we all know that apple will make this priority #1 to get this fixed.

It seems like in other phones there were these issues as well when they came out, then they were fixed via a software update.

Second full charge with iCloud off and everything else on.

Usage 3 hours 17 minutes

Standby 2 days 8 hours

That is with 2% battery life left.

Wow your worse than me :(

Everything turned off (ping, siri, location stuff, auto brightness) and already calibrated the battery from 0 -> 100%. Simply browsing the web on 3G at 50% brightness and I'm at 19% after 3 hours 18 min (should be 6 according to apple)...

It's getting worse and worse by the day. Yesterday I let it drain till 1% then I turned it off, charged it a bit then turned it on and kept it charging until it reached 100%, and lo and behold, it got even worse! Slept for 7 hours, opened the phone it had lost 8% charge, had skype open in the background, location services off and I get this dismal battery life. Simply unacceptable.

I was speaking to an apple rep today re the battery, and after 25 minutes on hold, I get the rep only to have the call quality drop significantly to the point I couldn't make out a word he was saying, static and weird sounds. Hung up.

I check the battery after being on the phone for 25 minutes, dropped by 4%.

200hr stand by time, yeah right. Barely 85 hours by my calculations.

I want to USE my iPhone, I want to have location services ON and my apps working and still get decent life time, this is utter nonsense that I have to turn off the phone functionalities just to be able to get pseudo improvements on my battery life, that are simply unapparent in the real world.

Also we all should realize that with 2 cores the battery will not be as good either. Apple fans are starting to see what everyone else has to face battery wise.

Thanks Epic! :)

You clearly missed his Standby time

you guys need to chill out
inb4 ios5 fix.

Denial works wonders for those who don't have dead iPhones on their hands.

Me?

I have NO complaints, even though I've had two 4S models fail completely.

No phone is perfect, Apples doing their best, and when I arrive in the store I get world class attention.

Without fail, in over two decades as a dedicated Apple customer who spends tens of thousands of dollars on Apple computers, phone, pads, & pods, I'm still _very_ satisfied.

Oh sure, I'm not afraid to speak my opinion, but make no mistake, Apple is my defacto choice without hesitation.

Whoops

Just assumed everyone charges their iPhone each night my bad. Thanks for pointing that out since it accounts for about 24% of his battery

My current percentage now is 14% with a usage time of 3 hours 30 min (no standby time)... :(

there is something wrong with the battery for sure. Sometimes i would go back home after work with my iphone 4 and still have my battery to the 60/70 levels.

Now with the 4S and the same use i get home with levels around to 20 and im lucky if it wont drop below 10 before it switch it off for the night.

I also had to turn cellular data of (3G mainly) since it went down to 2% the first day i used it. I knew that "Turn Of 3G" that was missing was going to cost me. I hope they bring it back.

Also my display is yellowish. I tried using it while reading some stuff on my ipad (that is perfect by the way) and i was shocked. I hope this is fixed or i get used to it soon...

Any chance this could e related to charging the iPhone on an iPad charger vs the included iPhone charger?

So we're in agreement that since Apple doubled the CPU and didn't change the battery we're getting about half the usage.

Funny that

Everyone I know tries to argue that dual cores help with the battery life. Is this not true?

I don't think it's a simple "there's two cores so it needs twice the power".

The software dictates how efficiently it's utilized. Take the computers for example, when needed, it will utilize all the cores to boost processing power but when you are just surfing the web, you are probably only using one core. When playing a game, having two cores is probably more battery efficient than if there was one core so I can see how battery power could be saved.

So could it be some old iOS apps that aren't using the cores efficiently that can skew the battery life?

Mind you in saying that people are having issues even after a restore with 0 apps.

Hey maybe Apple has a process incorrectly tuned for dual core CPU's

iPhone 4S

A great phone with 10 great new features and battery that requires 8 of those to be disabled in order to make it through the day.:(

Pretty much sums it up haha

I hope there is a fix in the pipeline, I have faith there is if engineers are surveying people.

Battery and hot iPhone fix

I too was plagued with extreme battery drainage and very hot iPhone issues. I would turn everything off (iCloud, location services, ect) and it helped, but still was not able to sustain a full night off the charger. Would wake up with the phone OFF, pretty much draining at the rate of 10% PER HOUR.
I did a phone restore, which subsequently downloads the FW, and voiala, a cool running battery efficient iPhone....with EVERYTHING ON! Now I get around 25 minutes per 1% drain instead of around 5%.

So there you have it. If you have not tried to do a restore then give it a shot. it most certainly fixed my issue, and best of all, I dont have to settle with anything off.

How much of that time though was with music playing and the screen turned off? That adds to the usage time making it seem like you are getting more than you really are...

Say you listen to music for 6 hours at work with the screen turned off... then that would be horrible battery life like the rest of us since you only got 3 hours of internet usage / web browsing :(

btw I LOVE the username! :D

Sho'nuff was a baaaaaaaaaaaad man

I gave mine another full charge from dead last night, all apps killed and rebooted.

Unplugged it at 11.55pm at 100%, got up this morning and at 8.25am it was at 90%! I checked the usage and it recorded 8 hours 30 mins of standby and 24 minutes of usage, weird huh?

What I want to know is why the phone was using itself for 24 minutes in the night?

An hour later it's on 82% and all I've done is check an email, a 1 minute call and go on the app store very briefly. There's another bunch of awdd messages in the log too.

Debating if I should DFU mine or not, but since it was set up as new I'm inclined to wait.

Trying to decide what to do ... to return or no to return, the 14 day cooling off period is almost up! There's no apple store near me so a genius appointment is not an option. :-(

For those who don't want to set up as new because you'll loose app data (lets say angry birds/cut the rope) you can extract the data from a backup using "iPhone Backup Extractor" and place them on the phone using "DiskAid" (Google them) both have free trials that would do the job for you and does not require jailbreak.

24 minutes of usage during the night is iCloud backing up your phone. Also, could be location services. And last, checking for mail.

could these be your reasons?

If I'm not mistaken, iCloud only backs up when your iPhone is plugged in to a charger and you're connected to a Wi-Fi network.

It's safe to say that it's a software issue. I restored my 4s on Friday and only lost @5% overnight. No errors in the diag area, dropped to 96% within minutes of being off charge this morning and went back up to 100% after a soft reset. Dropped a few percents over a couple of hours and lo and behold there were mobile mail error messages in the diag area.

I have my diagnostics sending to Apple which means that they will see there is an issue and be able to address it. I assume that those folk having issues are doing the same?

just popping in to say that, for some, the "fixes" offered in this thread do work. ie: reset network settings, turning off system services, etc.

So far, my phone is at 5 hours, 36 minutes of use (1 hour of 2D gaming, the rest iTunes, light phone calls, and texting and about 30-45 minutes web browsing) and 1 day, 16 hours of standby..battery at 39%. Screen at 100% brightness. However, I do put my phone in airplane mode when I sleep..no need to have it on.

This type of battery life seems acceptable to me..and, originally, I too had the rapid 1% drain every 5-10 minutes.
