fixed

I had mine draining 1% every minute or 2 on regular use. It was insane. I listened to what some of these guys are saying and drained it all the way down to 4% and then powered it all the way up and i got 1 day and 10 hours on and 6.5 hours heavy usage out of my last cycle. Now my battery is as good as my IP4 if not better.

If you have not tried discharging your phone all the way down and then charging it all the way up, you should. It seems to fix it for a lot of people and fixed it for me. Turning off icloud/gps/notifications/wifi/etc didn't do anything to fix my battery. Draining it all the way and then back up did.

Now i will add that today my battery seems to be draining fast again. looks like a charge cycle did not truly fix it and i'm going with everyone saying that 5.0.1 will fix it.

Yes, based on bad battery life and showing phantom usage data. Made appointment on website.

Actually starting to wonder now if it's reading right, it's still showing 100% after nearly 3 hours standby. I would have expected it to drop to 99% by now!

edit: speak of the devil, it dropped to 99% finally a couple minutes after.
::Whew::
That was a close one.
Almost required another appointment at the Genius bar!

From what I could see this morning it is used with location based reminders. I had inadvertently set one last night and this morning I saw the GPS icon on my screen so I immediately went into the location services screen, system services, and the cell network search was purple instead of the usual grey. Purple indicates it is actively using it, grey indicates it was used in the last 24 hours. As soon as I deleted the location based reminder the icon left my screen and cell network search turned grey.

I've also noticed unusually high battery drain when using location based reminders.

how bad was the battery life? do you mind to share?

While you in the apple store, how they determine to replace your iphone?
did they run a diagnostic on your battery?

I was dropping 3-4% per hour in standby, and standby was showing half an hour usage for each hour of standby.

They ran some diagnostic thing on the phone, though I missed how they did that or what it showed. But it was mostly from just seeing my usage screen and description, agreed that didn't seem right, and got a new phone.

By not using location based reminders, I got 15% drain with 1 Hour and 44 minutes of usage... which comes out to be about 11 hours of usage time (active usage)

Not too bad, but it was only after disabling several location services, diagnostics data, location based iAds, Time zone settings, and not using any location based reminders.

So far, everything seems good. I really hope they will fix this issue, though.

Had a Genius appt today and they said the diagnostics came back with a faulty battery. The phone would also randomly reset itself as well. Tried the restore to new phone, adjusted all the settings, etc, battery could barely make it 12 hours. Had the phone since launch day. The straw that broke the camel's back- I had it fully charged last night at 99% before going to sleep around midnight, and woke up this morning at 8a to it being at 74%. 8 minutes of usage and 9 hrs standby!

Apple's customer service was awesome, I was in and out of there with a new phone within 20 mins. They even gave me a free screen protector since I had one on both the front and back. First iPhone, and while it's been some ups and downs this past week, today made me really happy with Apple.

Hoping this new phone's battery is better.

so i dont think it's a hardware problem.

it's software cuz this new iphone sucks too. unless i should just do a new phone.

originally had the battery drainage problem, but it is now fixed after I restored the phone via itunes. my phone now lasts almost 2 days with light usage. hope this will help someone out there.

For what it's worth...

I have a 4S and my partner has a 4. I had no problems with battery but my partner did. Long story short, I fixed it by reseting the network settings. Both phones have great battery life now, everyone's happy.

I was having mediocre battery life but after draining it down a couple times, and giving it a week or so to settle in, it seems to be doing much better. My stats today are shown in the picture below. At the rate I could probably squeeze out close to 9 hours of usage from this thing. My time today has been used mainly making text messages, playing a few games, saying about 30 different phrases to Siri, taking a few pictures, watching a couple clips on the MLB app, and looking up some web pages. Suffice to say my initial concerns have been alleviated and I'm now thrilled with the battery, I guess it just needed some breaking in.

For those interested, here are my settings:
-Wifi off unless needed, ditto for Bluetooth
-Location services on for Camera, Facebook, Twitter, Maps, Photos, Siri, and a few others. I have weather turned off
-System location services all off except for Cell Network search
-Facebook push off except for Wall Posts and new messages
-6 email accounts: my two most used are on Push, the other 4 fetch every hour
-iCloud is on and with push, however I only have Reminders and Documents&Data on
-Siri raise to talk off
-Screen brightness about 45%

I suspect I'll be turning a few more things on if the battery continues to be this good. This is by far the best day I've had with the device. Similar usage had been getting me about 6 1/2 hours but today is gonna trump them all. Hopefully it keeps up =D

calibrate - good then bad

I calibrated my battery by charging, draining, charing. It worked perfect for 2 days. Then something strange happened. When it was on 97 percent yesterday I turned off the phone and when I turned it back on (by holding down the on off button) it said the battery was now at 99 percent.

Since then I've been losing 2 percent an hour on standby doing nothing. I've changed no settings since I calibrated it.

I will try and calibrate it again and see what happens. I'm still hopeful of a software fix, but ready to take it in for a check.

Ever since I made a few adjustments (Location Services > System Services), I've seen a significant improvement in battery life!

I disabled iMessage - when I had a chat in session, my battery % was dropping by the minute.

I also Turned OFF the location for 'Find My Friends' - I only turn that on when I feel the need to use it.

I seem to lose power really quickly between 100% and 80%, before the drain slows down. Has been a relatively normal sort of drain ever since.

Am now on 63%.
Usage: 2 hours 23
Standby: 6 hours 1

Not too bad I think, though it could be better. Hard to tell with the disproportionate discharge I seem to be getting. I can usually get through a day, charging overnight, get up a 6:30 and use pretty frequently throughout the day before losing it around 11pm that night.

Mind you, very strange the other day, I had it plugged in overnight and woke up with it on 95%. Thought it odd so left it on the charge for another hour, only to come back and find it back down to 93%. Since then (I may be imagining it, but) it feels like my battery is worse???

After having the battery drop 1-2% per minute for a little while today (during 3 five minute phone calls, couple texts) and the phone getting really hot in the back lower right corner, I made an appointment with the genius bar tomorrow. I'm a little worried if they do exchange it for me I'll actually end up with a phone with a worse battery. I have no idea what stats are good/bad, can anyone tell me what they think? (all location services except weather off, wifi and bluetooth off). There's no way I've had 3 hours of usage today (unplugged around 7:30am/8am).

Edited to add: The last 3 nights, with slightly lighter use, the battery had been at around 75%-80% at this time at night so today was much different. After the first couple of days of what seemed like poor battery life (and one instance of the phone running hot) I did one full drain and things were looking better til today.

My battery is insane now..insanely bad.

One day it's got a decent charge lasting me 7+ hours. The other day my battery dies in 3 hours.

I've given up on fixing it, and i'm just waiting for either a software upgrade or for the next batch of 4S to be launched so that i can get a replacement.

I get fantastic battery life when I'm at home, on my wifi network, and even generally out and about on 3g. However, the battery life is terrible when I'm at work.

On my iP3gs, I could never get 3g service in my office so I would switch over to Edge and get tolerable service that way. In my office is exactly where I'm getting very poor battery life, so I suspect I'm being affected by the antennas constantly trying to switch to get the best signal. I hope an update to iOS5 is released soon that restores the option to switch 3g off manually.

My husband works for the same company, but in a different building, and he is not getting poor battery life on his iP4s while at work.

I have disabled iMessage (don't use it anyway), plus all of the background/system Location Services except Cell Network Search. I've disabled Location Services on about half of the apps that request to use it. (Left the other ones on because I use them regularly and hate the nag screen every time I launch them.)

I did charge fully, drain the battery completely, then charge fully in the first couple days I had the phone.

How would you guys rate my battery for my iPhone 4S? Good, Bad, Decent?

I'll add most of it was Web Browsing, Gaming, Facebook, Twitter, E-Mail and a view videos. I barely used it to play music.

That's about what I get out of mine, and mine seems to be getting better, so I'd say you have nothing to worry about

Just a thought to share.

After my first defective battery died completely, it cost me some lost data since I had gone for four days without backing up the phone.

When Apple replaced it, I decided to backup daily like I do my Macs.

I'm so glad I did, when just days later that one died completely.

Hope this helps you.

Remember, just when you least expect it, yours could die without warning as mine did.

Is it possible to have someone type out some cliff-notes of what has been advised in the last 60+ pages?

Perhaps all the troubleshooting techniques?
