originally had the battery drainage problem, but it is now fixed after I restored the phone via itunes. my phone now lasts almost 2 days with light usage. hope this will help someone out there.

I had tried loads of different fixes previously and none of them worked so I also did it the old fashioned way.

I have iCloud and all location services on and I'm at 11 hours standby 1 hour usage 84%

Happy now finally

24 minutes of usage during the night is iCloud backing up your phone. Also, could be location services. And last, checking for mail.

could these be your reasons?

I checked the settings and it says I have not backed up to iCloud since before that charge, so that wasn't the phantom usage. It's unlikely to be email as push is disabled and fetch is set to 30 mins. I might set mail to manual and see how that goes.

I was having some horrible battery life at first as well. But after a couple charges I guess it "fixed" itself. It still goes down pretty quick between 100%-90% but after that it slows up.

The only change I've made was taking 2 of my 4 email accounts and setting them to fetch instead of push. I don't think that makes a huge difference though.

After talking with Apple again tonight it turns out they don't believe there is a iOS bug, they believe it's hardware issues. So anyway they have given me three options, mail in replacement, express mail in replacement or have the Apple Online Store cover it as DOA. 2 of these options leave me without an iPhone 4S for a while and the other one I need $999 to cover it. Not happy, I should be front of the line in getting a new one if I go through the Apple Store, not have to wait for a new one to come off the assembly line in 2 weeks.

When the MBP's were refreshed this year a lot of them were crashing under load. Back then Apple also said it was a hardware issue and guess what two weeks down the line they released a software update that fixed the problem.

I would take what they say at this early stage with a pinch of salt

Sorry to say, but it seems even more true with new iPhones: Never buy the new model. Wait until all the manufacturing bugs are worked out.

Yea, I wouldn't bet on it that it's hardware. As people are reporting good results after tweaks/restores.

5.0.1 will fix

This is the first year that I preordered an iPhone. I never do that. I prefer to wait two months or so to let others be the guinea pig. The year I don't, look what happens.

Bad, good and bad again.

After two days of fast batt drain and then a restore and set up as new I had one day where the batt acted normal. Today after a full drain and overnight recharge it's back to losing 10% every 40 min or so on standby.
Very frustrating to troubleshoot.

One more thing.
After a 100% charge the usage meter did not reset. It's still counting from yesterday.

I upgraded on Friday and this is what I got after draining the battery charge that came out of the box and then doing a full charge overnight. This is pretty much what I was getting on my iPhone 4 as well.
I’m pretty happy with it.

p.s. this is on both wifi and 3G for about equal times with everything on

I really dont understand what is going on with these batteries. Over the weekend I has great battery life. Granted I was on WiFi for a lot of the time, but the battery seemed better, good even. Today i get to work after sending maybe 5 or 6 imessages. Set my phone down on my desk in standby, look at it 45 mins later and i am at 90%. Last night i let it die out and turn itself off then charged it full overnight. When i looked at usuage this morning, it showed a lot more usuage then it should have. I feel like something is caught up running in the background.........annoying

I have been getting decent battery life since I got my phone on the 14th, all of a sudden this morning, the battery life is dropping quickly after a full charge.

The problem is def something running in the background that cannot be stopped. I unplugged my phone at 8:16am after a full recharge. I have used it for MAYBE 20 mins...usuage says 1 hour 3 min standy is 1 hour 9 min. It has been sitting with the screen off for most of that time.....i do not know what is keeping the usuage going. Cellular network data says 39.0 kb sent. I reset it to watch during this time. Received is at 0. What is going on?

Yes, my phone has been lying about my usage as well. Sometimes as much as 3-4x higher than my actual usage.

Everyone keeps posting pics of 6-7 hours of usage saying their battery life is fine, but I'd be surprised if many of those people actually USED their phone that much out of standby. 6-7 hours is good battery life as long as you are truly using it that long and the phone isn't claiming higher usage due to something happening in the background.

I’m a UK customer and I’ve just come back from a work trip to Jamaica.

I had data roaming turned off so no 3G, and the battery lasted twice as long as normal.

Now I’m back home and I’ll see if it’s back to the usual dire 4S battery life.

Something is definitely wrong however, either software, hardware or Apple mis-stating the facts. I have half a dozen friends who have upgraded to the 4S from the 4 and all on different networks and everyone of them is saying the battery life stinks compared to the 4 with the same services enabled.

When this battery life drain / mystery usage happens....nothing on 3G seems to work. I cannot get any apps to open and load new info.. ie: Twitter or facebook. I made an appointment today at the genius bar. I am going to see what they have to say or if they just give me a new 4s. I am not happy.

Did you find out who killed Strangways?

Grr... I'm still having issues...

35 minutes of usage (but I haven't really done anything!!)
and 90% battery remaining.

Basically, I'll get 5 hours and 50 minutes on full charge :(

I really hope apple releases a software update for this soon! :(

Could it be a AT&T related issue? My gf's Verizon phone seems to have much better battery life than my AT&T.

My daughter has the iphone 4 and I have the new 4s. She is a much heavier user than me and she only charges every 2-3 days. I have had to charge every single night since I got mine and the first Saturday, I charged up twice because I was customizing and getting used to everything.

I have all push notifications off, location off, wi-fi off, and no instant updating for my gmail and yahoo mails accounts.

I have done a full discharge three times since I got it with a full charge after.

Very disturbing.
