I'm convinced I should go to the apple store to replace my phone. This is quite simply horrid.

edit: It was 100% at 8am-sh. Only skype is kept open in the background. The usage consists mainly of reading tweets, a tiny bit of browsing, and 10-15 minutes of gaming. a 2D game.

That is more or less the norm until a fix, or as it should be called optimization, comes along.

After 3 full Battery cycle charge up whatever you guys call it, it is as atrocious as day 1. In fact I think probably worse. Well more apps have been installed and used, but still.

I don't even last ONE day standby if I use the phone for more than 1-2 hours. I don't even recall lasting 12 hours on standby.

 5 hours standby, 3 hours usage and 43% is the norm! God give me strength.

I don't have a screenshot from yesterday, but it was around 7 hours standby 4-4.5 hours of usage (can't recall the exact number) and I had 16%.

After reading Tom's Hardware review and understanding more about their test, I don't think I am a victim of battery gate. Although my test isn't done, I am projected to get around the same results they did --- I think in my case my battery "problem" was just my expectations and watching the a d@mn battery gauge all the time.

I do think the antenna changes and the additional capabilities add to the drainage but the fact of the matter is my phone is operating within spec so I don't think I have a defective unit but I do think there are those who do... and...Apple needs to find way via software to minimize the battery impact that these other apps are causing.

FOr those who want to elimate hardware as a problem, replicate Tom's test and see what you get. If you get the same then you need to make some decisions whether or not you should be a 4s owner or not...

No problems here.

Well, for what its worth, my 32gb 4s is lasting at least twice as long as my 16gb 3GS. I surf on wifi and 3g, email, text, play angry birds, watch videos (night shift worker) and it is unbelievable how much battery life is left.

Could the phone specs or country locations have any bearing on battery life? (I'm in the UK)

I have the gps on for facebook check ins and photo tagging.

All in all - I'm over the moon.:D

Here's what worked for me...

Had a similar problem -- my 4S (32gb) was quickly draining the battery -- without any phone usage (talk), just moderate email checking and such.

I had tried turning on/off wifi, bluetooth, siri, etc without much noticeable change. So last night I tried the big hammer - did a full restore, but didn't use my old backup. My thinking was my first sync did a restore of my 3gs backup, and maybe it was setting something internally that was screwing things up.

Today its been much, much better - I'm at 87% after 6 hours. Yesterday I think I was <50% after the same amount of time.

Unfortunately, using this technique means you lose all your app settings, so I had to re-add my IM accounts, logins for pandora, etc, etc. Contacts and email settings were reseeded from my Mac, so that eliminated a lot of potential hassle.

I had also noticed other oddities -- my locations arrow didn't always go away after exiting an app (even after killing Maps & Tomtom), I've had flakiness with the cell-data (but fine on wifi). Today I haven't noticed any of those problems.

I am the 1%

with 41% left! I disabled iCloud, most of the location services, and turned off send for diagnostics thing.

i saw the post about application running in the background...so I found out today that I have been running about 40+ apps in the background all this time :) So, I just removed them and keeping track to see how much percentage I'm losing on standby mode. :)

On the 'Time since last charge' My Usage and Standby measurements are exactly the same?! Disconnected my phone from the charger at 7am and its on 47% at the minute

And like i said useage and standby are both at 5 hrs 54 mins.

Thats a bit weird?! Might back up and restore my phone tonight and see if that does anything. Tried the whole discharge and recharge thing

That happens to me sometimes. I reset the network settings and it clears it up.

Pretty much the same lol!

I have a question for those who disabled iCloud for a while. If you 'delete' your account and all the documents and photo stream photos are removed from your device then re-add your account at a later date will those documents and photo stream photos be put back onto your device? Also will your contacts, calendars, tasks, reminders etc be deleted?

Those that are getting good battery life, is auto-brightness on or off?

I gave up... requested refund from Apple.com today.

They kindly sent me a FedEx return label, and a full refund will be no problem.

Maybe I'll try again in a month or so once this all settles down, I am not willing to get locked into a contract with all the issues people are having with the 4S.

Other than the battery the phone is awesome... oh well

I'm in the process of doing my 4th full drain and charge. My battery life was better after the first one, but has gotten progressively worse again. If this doesn't work, I will try a full erase and restore. And if that doesn't work, I will take it in to the store and try to get a replacement.

I had started with everything but manually check mail turned off. And then I decided that was asinine; the point of the phone is to be able to use it. I should be able to get turn by turn directions in my car and get mail notifications without my battery dying. As I posted far upthread, my really crappy old blackberry can do all of that and more and stay charged for two days straight so it makes not a lick of sense why I should have paid more than 3 times the cost of that phone for a device that only works for an hour and a half at a time.

If you are asking me this question then I keep auto brightness on for 95% of the time (at about 30-35%). I turn it off and put it right down if I'm in bed and the lights off lol.

Draining the battery to 0 and then back up to 100% is not something that you should have to do every time it appears to be draining too quickly. At most once a month, and doing it multiple times means that it isn't the root cause of your issues.

About crash reports. If you notice a ton of these filling up your settings then I would recommend a DFU restore and set up as new.

Damn i guess im lucky since i have no battery problems. I charged my phone up to 100% lastnight and took my phone off the charger after the World Series so around midnight. Did some internet browsing maybe 15 mins and went to sleep, woke up around 730 and my battery was at 98%. My 4s batterylife compared to my 3GS is WAYYYY better.

When it's in a poor reception area, it will use the GPS to find the nearest cell site.

I have all location services turned off, so there is no GPS activation whatsoever.

However, even if I did have it turned on, I don't see how this would help. How would the GPS finding the location of the nearest cell site help with reception? If the phone can't find a signal because its too weak, then it can't find the signal. Knowing that there is a tower 2 miles south isn't going to change that fact, or make the signal stronger somehow.
